Leisure centre is a good fit – community backs plans By Eva Astreinidou PLANS to build an £18.8million leisure centre in Wantage could be completed as soon as 2020 after receiving strong support from the community. More than 80 per cent of residents in the Vale of White Horse who participated in a consultation last month backed the proposals for the new centre at Mably Way. Now, the council will be moving forward with the plans and expects to have a planning application ready for submission in early 2018, with the aim of opening the centre in 2020. The new centre will be located next to the A417 and will help meet the growing demand for leisure facilities in the area. Cllr Charlotte Dickson, cabinet member for leisure at Vale, said:
“We received a great response to our consultation and I’m delighted to see that the vast majority support our proposal for a new leisure centre.” Eighty four per cent of those responding to the survey backed the proposal, with 70 per cent agreeing that Mably Way was a suitable location. The council hopes to help meet the increasing demand for leisure facilities, with thousands of new homes expected to be built in the district by 2031 at sites such as Grove Airfield and Crab Hill. The budget to deliver the new centre will be £18.8m. The Vale will fund the entire project upfront, but as new housing developments are built locally the council will receive significant contributions towards this cost from developers.

Running the marathon is a pushchair-over A mother-of-two running with a buggy has smashed a second world record. Jessica Bruce completed the Abingdon marathon on Sunday in an impressive 3:22:05 while pushing a double buggy with her children Daniel and Emilia inside.
The runner outdid herself, yet again having previously broken a Guinness World Record in 2015 for pushing a single buggy with a time of 3:17:52. The specific running buggy with the children in adds up to around 30kg.
