By Samantha McGregor THE ribbon for the multi-million pound extension to successful designer outlet centre Bicester Village has been cut declaring 30 new shops open. Town mayor Les Sibley had the honour of cutting the ribbon in front of 100 guests from the community and neighbouring tourist attractions. The extension brings the total stores at the centre to more than 160.
As part of the opening, Bicester Village announced a £22,000 fund to support the themes of youth, togetherness and health. It will be launched in January 2018 and local groups and organisations will be invited to bid for £1,000 each. Cllr Sibley said: “Bicester Village over the past two decades has made a considerable contribution to the community of Bicester with employment opportunities and apprenticeships.
“The village’s support and sponsorship for local schools, charities and other organisations is both well established and much appreciated.” About 500 jobs have been created from the move which saw the new shops built on the former Tesco site, in Pingle Drive, after the supermarket giant moved to Bicester Business Park across the A41 flyover in 2016. The joint scheme by Bicester
Village and Tesco was fi rst announced in 2012 and included £11million of road improvements on the A41, Oxford Road and Pingle Drive to help cut severe congestion around the area at peak times. Among the new stores is Acne Studios, North Face, Joseph, Under Armour and Rapha, a bespoke cycling brand with its signature Rapha Clubhouse, Villeroy & Boch, and Dsquared2. Restaurant the Secret Garden café,
which includes a traditional sweet shop and potting shed, also opened and was the venue for a celebration breakfast to mark the opening. Business director Sarah-Jane Curtis said she was “excited” to see the new stores open. She said: “We are especially grateful and proud of all our teams who have worked tirelessly to make the deadline and to the community of Bicester for their patience to reach completion of the new road network.”
