TOWN leaders have backed Wallingford’s CCTV system after new figures revealed the cameras captured more than 100 incidents in three months this year. The South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) CCTV report for July to September showed 575 incidents were caught on camera across South Oxfordshire. Of these incidents, 105 were in Wallingford, which led to five arrests made by police. The reports also reveal the most common incidents in Wallingford were observations; fear for welfare, for drugs, and substance misuse. Supt Jim O’Ryan, local police area (LPA) commander for South & Vale, said: “Thames Valley Police recognises the value of CCTV in tackling crime and keeping communities safe. “We are working with councils to ensure that CCTV services are delivered as efficiently and effectively as possible.� However, when Supt O’Ryan

was questioned about whether funding for CCTV could be slashed amid cuts, he replied: “The fi nancial environment in which the police service is operating means that all services we deliver are being kept under review.� SODC councillor for Wallingford, Elaine Hornsby, said having the 16 CCTV cameras around the town means wouldbe offenders think twice before committing crimes. Cllr Hornsby said: “They act as a deterrent and it’s not about what they capture, it’s about what they prevent. “Town’s like Wallingford get crimes that come in spates, like a few years ago when my window and a couple of others in the town were broken, before it died down soon afterwards.� She added the five arrests show the cameras are doing their job by preventing incidents in the town. Across South Oxfordshire,

there were 54 incidents of drunkenness reported between July and September, 26 incidents of theft and 18 incidents of assault. There were 42 arrests made as a result of reviews of the footage. In comparison, between April and June, there were 644 incidents caught on camera, 41 arrests made and 65 incidents of theft caught on camera. • Continues on page 3
