By George Welch A NATIONAL charity has said the Government ‘still has a lot of work to do’ before rolling out a new scheme doubling the number of hours available to parents for free childcare. The comments from the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) came after Caroline Dinenage, the parlia-
mentary under secretary of state for early years, visited Oxford last week to open a new nursery and to discuss free childcare. The minister called in at the Cooperative Nursery, in Rose Hill, and the new Old Station Nursery, at Oxford Science Park, on Thursday last week to help her understanding of Oxfordshire’s childcare provision.
The Conservative MP for Gosport visited the two nurseries as the Government edges closer to rolling out a scheme doubling the number of hours of free childcare for working parents of three- and four-year-olds to 30 in September. As part of the project, the Government will pay £1billion extra per year by 2019/20 to fund the extension of the
free childcare entitlement. Speaking about the scheme, education secretary Nicky Morgan said: “For too long, rising childcare costs have been a barrier preventing parents and particularly mothers from working. “We have made a commitment to help working people, and through this extended offer we will help thousands more parents who want to return to
work to do so.” But the NDNA has called on the Government to do more. Claire Schofield, director of policy, membership and communications at the NDNA, said: “We welcome more funded childcare for working families but for nurseries to be able to deliver VË Í ÖjÄË Ë¬?~jËÏ
