It comes after the Oxfordshire Strategic Housing Market Assessment last year said that at least 3,600 more houses were needed in the district between now and 2031. This is in addition to the 11,000 homes put forward in the district council’s Local Plan. And provision for an extra 3,000 houses may also need to be found to fi ll the unmet quota of Oxford City Council, who say they do not have space to build their allocation. SODC has said it believes most of these houses should be in the Science Vale area around Didcot, and in the district’s towns and larger villages.

Angie Paterson, SODC’s cabinet member for planning policy, said: “The response to our initial consultation last summer has helped us draw up these more defi ned options. “Local people clearly recognise the need for more housing. “This is an additional phase of consultation to help us gather views on the best way of distributing the new houses.” Some of the larger villages in the district that are being considered for further development include Culham, Berinsfield, Benson and Cholsey. But Philip Cross, district councillor for Berinsfield, said that the housing strategy for South Oxfordshire has been agreed and should be left as it is. He said: “We set out a clear plan for the next 15 years and as far as I’m concerned that is entirely sufficient for the needs of the district. • Continues on page 3
