Mother detained indefinitely for stabbing her son to death By George Welch A MUM who ‘tragically’ stabbed her five-year-old son to death after suffering years of delusions will be detained in a psychiatric unit indefi nitely, a judge has ordered. Police officers discovered Emma Jackson covered in blood and the body of her son, Tyler Warmington, at her home in Bromsgrove, Faringdon, on March 14 last year. The 41-year-old, who was found with self-infl icted injuries on her wrists, said her son was ‘sleeping’ upstairs. Officers found Tyler’s body in an upstairs bedroom with a kitchen knife and 13 stab wounds. A postmortem examination revealed shortly afterwards that Tyler died from stab wounds to the chest. Jackson, who said she had no recollection of what had happened, denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Concerns over Tyler’s wellbeing were raised by his school when he did not turn up for two days. Sentencing at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, Judge Ian Pringle QC said Jackson’s life sentence ‘is living with the knowledge that she killed her own son’, before issuing her an indefi nite hospital order under the Mental Health Act. Dr Julia Cartwright, who has been

treating Jackson since last year, told the court she believed she was a paranoid schizophrenic. Jackson admitted keeping a knife in her bedroom due to her fear someone would take Tyler away. The court also heard how she suffered from ‘delusional moods’ and ‘persecutory moods’. Jackson was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and transferred to the Littlemore Mental Health Centre for ongoing treatment. Her history of mental health issues dates back to her mid-twenties. In 2015 Tyler was taken into foster care for a short time. An independent case review has been started. Superintendent Rory Freeman, LPA Commander for South and Vale of White Horse, said the circumstances around Tyler’s death were ‘tragic’. He added: “This case has had a very significant effect on the community of Faringdon. “There are few words that can describe the sadness that we have all felt over this case and our thoughts are with Tyler’s family.” Claire Beards, Senior Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: “This case represents a tragedy for Tyler’s family, who have been devastated by his death. Our thoughts are very much with them all at this time.”
