Pair awarded for saving elderly couple in river fall
FISHERMEN LIFESAVERS TWO fishermen who rescued an elderly couple from the River Thames at Little Wittenham last year have been honoured for their bravery by Oxfordshire’s chief fire officer. Mark Seagroatt and Roy Walker helped a 70-year-old man and 69-year-old woman from the water near to Days Lock on October 6 last year. The woman had fallen from a boat and become stuck between it and the riverbank, before her husband jumped in to keep her above water. Roy, from Buckingham, and Mark, from Swindon, heard their calls for help and were able to pull the couple out of the water. And they were honoured for their actions at a ceremony held at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue’s headquarters in Kidlington by chief fi re officer David Etheridge last Thursday, who presented them with Commendation awards. Another award recipient was Clint Walther, who saved a neighbour with a brain disease from

a fi re in Shenington, near Banbury, in November last year. His actions managed to save the woman’s life, as she would not have survived in the smokefi lled room before fi refighters arrived. Mr Etheridge added: “These awards are very rarely given out. “The criteria I set is that without the recipients’ actions, would a life or lives have been lost, and certainly on both of these occasions the answer is undoubtedly yes. “I personally congratulate Roy, Mark and Clint for their selfless, life-saving actions and I am very honoured to have given these commendations to them to mark their courage and bravery. “All three were presented with situations where quick-thinking was required and they all reacted swiftly and ultimately saved the lives of three people.”
