THE Cinnamon Tree in Mortimer has won an award for being in the top 100 South East best Asian restaurants.

Based on The Street in the Village of Mortimer, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength. Their award-winning chef has been with the restaurant specialising in Bangladeshi & Indian Cuisine for 7 years.

Kuti, the owner of the Cinnamon Tree has been in the business for over 41 years.

Kuti came to England with his family from Bangladesh in 1976 where he worked as a chef and manager for 5 years at a restaurant based in Kent.

In 1981 Kuti decided to set up his own restaurant in Kent which he ran for many years until he decided to move into Berkshire where he opened a restaurant in Eton Wick, this is where he met his now chef based at the Cinnamon Tree.

We then fast forward to 2007 where the property in Mortimer came up for sale and Kuti saw this as a perfect opportunity to set up a new business in a village setting with fantastic views and rural surroundings.

The new property in Mortimer was perfect as it is local to the train station, Devere Wakefield Park Hotel, M4, Reading, Madjeski Stadium, Tadley & Basingstoke.

Since opening in 2007 they have won several awards for their outstanding home inspired food, been given a 4 star hygiene rating & insured that every customer receives the highest level of service.

The restaurant has a very good

reputation for repeat customers and attracting new faces due to the high level of service and overall dining experience that the team provide.

As the Cinnamon Tree caters for functions, they have attracted business such as BMW, Devere & Guy Salmon Jaguar.

If the function can’t come to the restaurant then Kuti and his team can bring the catering to you, the Cinnamon Tree offers outdoor catering service’s all year round which proves popular with local business’ and events including weddings.

As a family friendly restaurant, the Cinnamon Tree offers a Sunday Buffet which is very popular with families and for those looking for something different than the traditional Sunday lunch. With over 20 dishes available for just £9.95 per adult and £5 for children under the age of 10. The Sunday

buffet is available all year round from 1pm – 10pm and dishes that are not in the buffet are also available to order.

The Cinnamon Tree offers a huge selection of home inspired dishes & wide range of world wines to compliment the vast array of taste tingling dishes that suit a complete novice when it comes to a traditional dish or a curry connoisseur.

The Observer was given the chance to try the outstanding food on offer and it did not disappoint.

The Viceroy Threvuje stood out and had to be ordered as this is one of the Chef’s recommendations and is served in a medium or hot sauce with a selection of chicken, lamb & duck. The trio of meats are highly spiced and barbecued, then seasoned in ginger, onions & aromatic herbs.

Before being served, it is marinated

in a special sauce that is full of flavour and compliments all of the seasoning on the succulent meat.

Also on trial was the Mach Massala, this dish is perfect if you are fish lover. The Mach Massala is chunks of flavoursome salmon which are marinated in special home inspired spices and then cooked with fresh garlic, tomatoes & herbs.

The dish is light but full of flavour and is perfect for those looking for something that isn’t too hot but still has plenty of flavour.

On the side, we had Chicken Tikka which is barbecued and cooked in a clay oven, this dish is served sizzling with cooked onions, we knew our food was on the way when the sizzling hot plate came out of the kitchen. The chicken was succulent and deliciously full of flavour and was perfect as a starter but could equally be used as a side to complement any of the dishes on offer.

We were given a generous helping of Onion Bhaji’s and they were just what was needed to go with the Massala sauce.

It was hard to resist the fi ne breads on offer, so we decided on the Peshwari naan. This naan was perfectly sweet and perfect for sharing.

When it comes to wine; the Cinnamon Tree have a huge array of wines to choose from, we opted for the Gracia de Chile Sauvignon Blanc, this is a refreshing, light and crisp wine which accompanies the fresh curry’s that we opted for.

Of course, if you don’t fancy wine there is the famous Cobra beer, whiskeys, gins, vodkas and almost any spirit that you can think of all well stocked behind the bar.

The Cinnamon Tree made the perfect Friday night meal out, the staff could not do enough for us to make our dining experience a real pleasure.

They offered advice on food to try, other suggestions and also suggested that we try the Panir Shaslik Massala as a small dish on the side. The Panir Massala is a special cheese which is grilled with tomatoes, onions and green pepper before being served in a herby and spicy massala sauce.

The Cinnamon Tree really stand out from the rest.

The restaurant is the perfect retreat for anyone that wants to try some real home inspired food that is served and cooked by a friendly team in a welcoming environment.

Ruth fundraising for terminally ill David

By Brian Radford A NEWBURY woman who has fought back from a life of drugs, alcohol and depression is hoping to raise money for a terminally ill friend who she credits with helping to turn her life around.

Ruth Headon will celebrate her 33rd birthday at the weekend by shaving off her bottle red hair for 51-year-old David Head, who has incurable leukaemia.

When they met, she and David were homeless and alone as they took shelter in the Two Saints hostel in Newbury in early 2014, with Ruth admitting that she never felt sure she’d still be alive in the morning.

Breaking her silence on a life of continual drinking of spirits, Guinness

and bottles of red wine, Ruth recalls going through at least two litres of vodka every day.

She said: “I was smoking at 13, and drinking at 15, sometimes three pints of Guinness a day, followed by a glass of wine in the evening.

“There were no hangovers. At times I must have been permanently drunk from one day to the next, and no-one ever noticed.

“My parents had no idea of what was going on.

“I was pregnant at 17, and a mum at 18, with my lovely girl, Summer.”

Cannabis, countless pills, and occasional cocaine all added to her plight.

She continued: “Drugs fi rst hit me when I was 15, mainly ecstasy and cannabis to start, which I got from older friends, who took all sorts of

weird pills and handed them out.”

Despite the drinking and drugs Ruth managed to pick up more than 10 GCSEs from The Downs School in Compton, before enrolling on a two-year course in performing arts at Newbury College.

She added: “Several times I danced in shows at the Corn Exchange, and twice played leading roles in several dramas at the Edinburgh Festival.

“For a time, I was a special needs teaching assistant and deputy chair of a PTA, and I worked in a restaurant where Kate Middleton was a regular.

“We exchanged a few words, and I met Prince William on the one occasion that he came in with her.

I have lived in and around Thatcham for 40 years and my parents live in the same house in Thatcham they moved into in 1976.

I am providing the people of Thatcham South and Crookham with more choice when they look at the ballot paper. I am giving them an alternative to years of Conservative and Liberal Democrat domination of the council that has overseen the decline of our public services.

The two biggest issues facing us locally are the cuts to services for our children and the lack of care for the vulnerable in our community. In particular the cuts to funding for our schools is simply unacceptable.

As a parent myself I am incredibly concerned that my children will be educated in a system that will see four teachers cut from primary schools and 26 teachers from secondary schools by 2019. These are our children and our future, we should be protecting and improving the education we give to them.

My roots are in Thatcham and in public service.

As councillor for Thatcham South and Crookham I worked with distressed residents during the 2007 floods, achieved the weight limit on Crookham Hill and built the footbridge over the railway to the canal.

Our Conservative controlled council is a byword for cuts, increased council tax and poor delivery across many services.

They are low achieving and complacent and desperately need holding to account.

I will focus on improving our schools, recycling rates and greener transport and providing affordable housing to rent and buy.

Our three children went to our local primary and Kennet School.

I ran my own business from 1994 to 2009; was chairman of the Cot Death Society; sailed for 10 years in the Royal Naval Reserve; and served as councillor for 30 years, rising to deputy leader of both Thatcham and West Berkshire Councils.

I am standing for the district council because it’s time Thatcham had a different voice in West Berkshire.

Of the 52 councillors, 47 are from one party. They all vote the same way.

Within days of the last election in 2015 they awarded themselves a 16.5 per cent pay rise, then cut services – and put up your council tax.

Would a Green councillor be different? You bet.

Councillors’ allowances should be frozen at the pre-2015 rate and I will not take any increase.

For too long, Thatcham has been the poor relation of West Berkshire. Newbury gets two new railway bridges – we have to make do with an old level crossing. I won’t stop fighting until we get a bridge.

I’m a real person, not a professional politician. I’m a care worker, and I really do care.

I served my country with the RAF, and I really am ready to serve the people of Thatcham.

On your marks for the 10th anniversary of Bayer 10k

By Adam Flinn HUNDREDS of runners will take to the streets of Newbury this Sunday as the Bayer 10k celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Up to 1,000 men, women and children are expected to take part in the main 10k race and the junior events, which all set off from the Market Place.

Special presentations will also be held on Sunday for runners who have competed in all 10 races held so far, with at least six people having come forward ahead of the race.

These include Dave Titcomb, from Whitchurch, who said: “This is the best locally supported race on the running calendar.

“It’s a great race to support, and because I was involved a bit in the organisation of the very fi rst one, I feel very much a part of it.”

The route takes runners on a mixture of roads and paths through Newbury, including along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Every runner this year will receive a 10th anniversary souvenir to mark the occasion.

NEWBURY: A 34-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with attempting to cause/incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

Barry Skinner, of Gaywood Drive, appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Friday, He will next appear at Reading Crown Court on June 19.

NEWBURY: A final total of more than £2,200 has been announced by the Lions Club of Newbury as the amount raised from their Easter Egg fundraising.

Twenty giant eggs were placed around Newbury and Thatcham before being raffled off, with £2,216.66 raised.

Money will be donated to the Lions club’s welfare funds.

NEWBURY: A dog stolen from its owner during a robbery in Hambridge Road has been reunited with him.

The Bichon Frise was stolen and his 49-year-old owner assaulted on May 6.

Police urge public to be vigilant Electric Garage Doors MEMBERS of the public are being urged to remain vigilant in the aftermath of the terrorist attack which killed more than 20 people in Manchester on Monday night.

Thames Valley Police has said it is reviewing its security measures, although it stated there is no intelligence that suggests a threat to people living in Berkshire or the rest of the region at present.

A bomb went off at the end of an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena late on Monday evening.

At the time of going to press police had confi rmed that 22 people had died in the attack, with dozens more injured.

Thames Valley’s deputy chief constable John Campbell said: “We send our thoughts and condolences to those affected by this

terrible incident in Manchester and acknowledge the work of our colleagues from all the emergency services who responded to the unfolding events.

“In light of such tragic events the cooperation of our communities is more important than ever before.

“I would urge you to contact the police straight away if you believe that someone is acting suspiciously.

“Trust your instincts and let us decide whether the information is important or not. No piece of information is considered too small or insignificant.

“My officers and staff will continue to provide a visible presence in our communities and we have specialist resources in place to respond in an emergency.”

Postal vote confusion ‘could affect election’

CONFUSION over the date postal votes in West Berkshire were being sent out could have “a serious effect on the election” for the Newbury seat.

David Marsh and Tony Vickers, party agents for the Greens and Liberal Democrats respectively, say they had been told by West Berkshire Council that postal votes would start going out from Tuesday this week.

As such they had been planning to send out their own campaign materials to coincide with this date.

But the fi rst postal votes were delivered last Friday, leading the agents to raise concerns that voters wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see what all the parties have to offer.

Mr Marsh said: “We’re really upset about this.

“We don’t have the resources to constantly bombard people with stuff so wanted to properly target it to avoid annoying the voters, and then they all get their votes early.

“We were categorically told no postal votes would go out until Tuesday at the earliest.

“The agents were given completely the wrong information, and this has had a serious effect on the election.”

Agents for the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats are unhappy about the timing of postal votes being sent out In the 2015 general election, more than 15,000 people in the Newbury constituency cast their votes by post, equating to just over 26 per cent of the turnout.

This compares to a figure of 16.4 per cent nationally.

Mr Vickers believes around half of those in Newbury who have received their postal votes would have already voted by the time his party’s literature arrives through their doors.

He said: “We’ve wasted a lot of money, in our case thousands of pounds, on mailing postal vote letters, half of which probably will arrive after the voters concerned have sent their ballot papers back.

“We had been told in good faith

from the council official the earliest date the postal ballot envelopes would be released to Royal Mail, and we’ve planned on this basis.

“Parties like us don’t have the money to spare to waste. It’s really annoying.”

Peta Stoddart-Crompton, spokesperson for West Berkshire Council, said: “At a meeting with party election agents last week they were advised of the latest dates we had from our printers.

“However, they were also advised that we could not make any guarantees.

“As soon as we had confi rmation that the votes would be released to Royal Mail on Friday all agents were advised.”

WEST BERKS: The public consultation into West Berkshire Council’s minerals and waste local plan is now live.

The council has proposed seven preferred sites for quarrying across the district, with the aim of stopping speculative applications from being approved.

It is running until June 30, and information can be found at westberks.gov.uk/mwlppo or at the council’s offices in Market Street, Newbury.

HUNGERFORD: Members of the public had to intervene in a fight between two men outside the One Stop shop on Fairview Road on Saturday evening.

It happened at 9.55pm. Neither of the men are thought to have been seriously hurt.

Investigating officer PC Elliot Male said: “We believe there were a number of people in the area at the time, and urge anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Man sentenced over retail park sexual assaults A NEWBURY man has been given a suspended prison sentence after groping a woman and then inappropriately touching another woman.

Hawkar Shwani, 23, of Fifth Road, was given a 16-week jail term, suspended for one year, at Reading Magistrates’ Court.

The offences happened on April 13 at two stores in Newbury Retail Park.

Shwani groped a 21-year-old woman in Boots, before making a lewd comment to her.

He then left and went across the road to Tesco, where he inappropriately touched a woman over her clothes while her young child was with her.

Shwani was charged with two counts of sexual assault the following day, and pleaded guilty in court on May 9.

As well as the suspended prison sentence, Shwani also has to register with the police for seven years in accordance with the sexual offences act.

PC Lucie Chhetri from Newbury police station said: “Shwani’s actions took place in broad daylight in two busy stores. He showed a total disregard for the law and sexually assaulted two women.

“His swift arrest, charge and bail conditions send a clear message that Thames Valley Police will not tolerate such behaviour from anyone.”

Ageing doggy duo search for a new home together

By Adam Flinn YOU might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can give them a new home.

Dogs Trust Newbury is looking for new owners for two of its overlooked older dogs Jett and Roxy, who are aged 10 and nine respectively.

The duo have spent most of their lives together, and were handed over to the rehoming centre through no fault of their own after a change of circumstances for their former owner.

And after fi nding life in the kennels a bit strange, the pair are now searching for a new home where they can stay together.

Amy Dean, home from home coordinator for Dogs Trust Newbury, said: “We would love to see Jett and Roxy rehomed together so they can enjoy their twilight years with a loving family.

“Unfortunately, mature dogs tend to get overlooked in favour of younger dogs, however these adorable canines still have a lot of love and life to give.

“We haven’t had anyone express any interest in them,

UKIP resignation THATCHAM: More turmoil has hit UKIP after their candidate who was excluded from next month’s council by-elections quit the party last week.

Ian Waters was hoping to stand for UKIP for the two Thatcham South and Crookham seats on June 8, but problems with the paperwork meant he was stopped from doing so.

Mr Waters did not want to comment on his resignation.

Deputy visits WEST BERKS: The deputy leader of the Green party, Amelia Womack, was in Newbury and Thatcham on Friday to speak to voters.

She chatted with residents about issues such as the Thatcham level crossing and West Berkshire’s library service.

be left on their own for up to four hours, and are suitable for children over the age of 11.

WEST BERKS: All patient services at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading are now back to normal following the cyber attack earlier this month.

Phone services at the hospital had been affected, but it was confirmed last Friday that these have now been restored.

Depot plans THATCHAM: Plans to demolish the derelict Pound Lane Depot and build 47 homes in its place have gone back before the planning committee.

The proposals had been approved last year, but amendments to the application mean a fresh decision is needed.

West Berkshire Council’s eastern area planning committee was expected to debate the application last night as the Observer went to press.

Interact’s £800 NEWBURY: After a year of hard work, the Interact club at Park House School has presented a total of £800 to three charities it was raising money for.

Daisy’s Dreams, the Rosemary Appeal and the End Polio Now campaign all received funding from the club, which serves as a youth wing of Newbury Rotary Club.

Family day opening serves up revamped tennis courts BBC tennis commentator Jonathan Overend will be the special guest at the grand opening of the newly-refurbished tennis courts in Victoria Park this Saturday.

It forms part of the Victoria Park Family Day, which will feature a host of activities from 10am to 3pm.

Jonathan spent a decade as the BBC’s tennis correspondent and is currently a presenter on BBC 5 Live, and will be present for the opening at 11.30am.

The family day, being run by Newbury Town Council, is billed as a chance for residents to fi nd out what has been happening with the extensive improvements to the park.

Newbury Bowls Club will be

open from 10.30am after repairs were made to its bowling green.

The splash park will be back open for the summer, while the skate park will have demonstrations from local skateboarders and BMXers.

V o l u n teer group Friends of Victoria Park will be discussing its work such as helping to maintain flowerbeds, and will be signing up new members.

Change in fire safety tactics

By Adam Flinn FEWER safety visits to Berkshire businesses are being carried out by the fire service as part of a new approach to tackling the issue.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is now focusing on carrying out unannounced safety inspections at businesses deemed to be at

higher risk.

It was agreed by the Fire Authority last month and has now come into effect, in a bid to save costs on unnecessary inspections.

RBFRS is now intending to carry out 1,400 full fi re safety audits per year, in comparison to 1,800 last year.

Group manager Chris Bunyan said: “We carried out 1,800 visits

last year but, in 76 per cent of the audits carried out, business owners were, with ongoing support from us, making their buildings a safe working environment for their staff.

“From our perspective, the buildings were safe enough, so it was agreed that this may be creating an unnecessary burden on businesses and our staff could work more effectively by doing

fewer but more focused visits.

“A more targeted approach on the remaining 24 per cent of businesses that are more likely to need improvements would result in more work for fi re safety officers, hence why fewer audits are likely to be completed.

“Complying with the law is not optional because failing to comply could cost lives.”

The inspections are risk-

based, meaning higher risk buildings such as those where people sleep or where people are unfamiliar with the premises receive audits more frequently.

Businesses where the fi re service believes standards are good will receive audits less often.

During the audits, inspectors make sure that businesses are compliant with all the fi re safety regulations that apply to them.

School’s improvement plan Primary rated ‘inadequate’, but new head already addressing issues

By Adam Flinn AN IMPROVEMENT plan has been put in place at a West Berkshire primary school which was rated “inadequate� in its latest Ofsted inspection.

Pupils at Lambourn Primary School were found not to be making enough progress in reading, writing or maths, and had weak basic skills such as spelling and punctuation.

The quality of teaching was also criticised, with work being found to be too easy for some

pupils and too hard for others.

Ofsted’s report, published earlier this month, followed the first inspection in four years at the school, when it was previously rated as “good�.

Some of the problems were attributed to successive changes in leadership, and the school is hopeful that things will start to improve following the appointment of new headteacher Rachael Duke in February.

Neil Hastle, chair of governors at the school, said: “Of course we are very disappointed by this

report but we have a clear plan in place to bring about improvements at the school. “We had already identified some of the issues ourselves before the inspection and started to address them, in particular by appointing a new headteacher to provide stability and lead the programme of work we need to do.�

Other issues raised by Ofsted included the school having too narrow a curriculum which didn’t cover enough subjects, and the measures in place to safeguard children not being effective.

However it was praised for the fact that pupils enjoy school and attend regularly, and that the new headteacher has a clear understanding of what needs to change.

Mrs Duke said: “Despite the outcome, inspectors found much to commend the school for and the report contains many positives for us to take away. “While Ofsted recognised the strong upward direction of the school, they can only judge our recent history. “We are taking on this challenge with enthusiasm and feel

confident of a positive and promising future.�

The boy is back in town

A FOUNDING member of the legendary Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, Eric Bell will be performing at Arlington Arts Centre on Friday, June 16.

The Northern Irish rock and blues musician founded Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott and Brian Downey back in 1969.

Bell played lead guitar in the band over the course of their fi rst three albums, recording perhaps the band’s most iconic song, a cover of the traditional Irish song Whiskey in the Jar. Bell left the band after a New Year’s Eve gig in Belfast in 1973 for fear of his health, after drink and drugs started to become too widely available to the band.

In the years following Thin Lizzy, Bell joined forces with Noel Redding, the former bass player with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, as well as music icons such as Bo Diddley and Van Morrison.

At the beginning of his career, Bell played with a series of Irish showbands in the late 1960s, carving out his place on the music scene.

More recently, he has been touring and recording with the blues-based trio the Eric Bell Band, releasing the album ‘Exile’ in 2015.

Rio is like a carnival on the road

By Tony Yates THANKS to a variety of upgrades - the new Kia Rio now feels a lot more in tune with the driver, and the looks aren’t bad either.

The all-new Rio is offered with a 10-model line-up – based on four engines, three gearboxes and four trim levels, including a limited-run, luxuriously equipped ‘First Edition’ variant, which comes with the latest connectivity packages for the modern driver - along with modern fuel efficient engines and updated suspension and steering.

Power and efficiency The 998cc engine is a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 118bhp and a maximum of 171- lb ft of torque, making it incredibly good at getting a move on quite quickly considering it’s an eco car. 0-60mph comes in at around 9.8 seconds and if you add in the Start/Stop system, it will at a push return over 60mpg

On the road The new Rio handles well, and the grip levels are good – but I don’t think it’s as well planted as the cee’d though (no pun intended), but saying that it does do a pretty good job of keeping you on the road with very little fuss. The Rio also has no problems dealing with uneven surfaces and into the corners it feels well sorted out – and that’s the surprise here when you think about the cost of the Rio compared to some of its rivals.

Equipment, safety and technology The interior is fresh and all the buttons and dials are clear, even if they do look a little basic in appearance. The front seats have plenty of adjustment to them; feel well made and very comfortable. Rear leg room is also

The Original Bowling Company Ltd has given to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council an application for variation of the Premises Licence in respect of Hollywood Bowl, Basingstoke Leisure Park, Worting Road, Basingstoke, RG22 6PG A brief description of the proposed variation is: To amend the Premises Licence to remove the following conditions:There shall be a personal licence holder present on the premises at all times when alcohol is being sold. On Friday and Saturday evenings from 2100 hours until the closing time of the venue, 2 SIA licensed door supervisors will be employed at the premises.

This number to include only door supervisors employed solely on door supervisor duties, i.e safety and security. At least one female SIA licensed door supervisor should be available if female customers are to be the subject of full body searches. Random searches of customers shall be carried out at the discretion of the company as a condition of entry.

Prominent clear notices will be displayed at the exit from the premises requesting that customers respect the needs of local residents and leave the premises and the area quietly.

To add the following condition to the Licence:The use of door supervisors on the premises will be risk assessed by the premises licence holder and a copy of the risk assessment will be kept on the premises and made available to the police and licensing authority on request.

The risk assessment will be reviewed at least once every 12 months.

The Licensing Register of Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council is kept at The Civic Offices, London Road, Basingstoke, RG21 4AH and where applicable at www. basingstoke.gov.uk. The record of the application may be inspected during normal office hours at the Council’s above address and where applicable, at any time on the above website.

Representations which shall be made in writing may be made by a responsible authority or any other person to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council to be received at their above address by no later than Tuesday 20 June 2017.

It is an offence knowingly or recklessly to make a false statement in connection with an application; the maximum fine for which a person is liable on summary conviction being £5,000.

Poor batting costs Falkland

By Adam Flinn DESPITE restricting Cove to 212-8 off their 50 overs, Falkland Cricket Club couldn’t get close in response as they were all out for just 125 on Saturday.

League leaders Cove had a steady if unremarkable innings when they batted fi rst, with opener Nicholas Farr doing the best as he reached 57 before being caught.

However Falkland’s batters

struggled to get going, with seven of them being dismissed for single figure scores as they succumbed to defeat.

Cove were put in to bat fi rst and while Farr was able to put some runs on the board, fellow opener James Marsh went for a duck after just six balls.

The rest of Cove’s batters produced reasonable scores, although Falkland made sure no-one else got above 30.

Craig Williams was the star

on the field as he caught Farr, Stanley Marisa and Jordan Finney, as well as stumping Andrew Short.

However Cove reached the end of their 50 overs with wickets in hand, completing their innings on 212-8.

Having scored over 200 in both their matches so far this season, Falkland would have thought they could grab the win.

But things got off to a dif-

ficult start with three cheap wickets – Paul Jenkins for two, Danny Williams for four and Mark Abrams for one.

Opener James Bird managed to get to 30 before being bowled, a score matched by Daminda Kolugala before he fell to the same fate.

Williams managed to get 13, alongside three more single figure scores from Rob Jones (4), Sam Trumper (2) and Charlie Dale (4).

And when Saad Altaf went for nought with Jason Williams not out on 17, it meant that Falkland ended up 87 runs short on 125 all out.

It sees Falkland drop back to fifth in Division One of the Thames Valley Cricket League on 34 points, although it remains close with just two points separating fifth to ninth.

They host Gerrards Cross in their next match on Saturday.

Impressive first win as Thatcham kick start season AFTER two near misses so far this season, Thatcham Town Cricket Club finally got their first win on the board with an impressive 121-run win over Sonning on Saturday.

Josh O’Flynn put in the performance of the afternoon as he made a century, while Jamie Young (62) and Tom Mahoney (37) also put in good scores as Thatcham set a target of 269.

Bowlers John Williams and Jack Andrews then managed to get four wickets each during Sonning’s innings to limit them to 148 all out and secure the win.

It was a welcome result for Thatcham, who had lost their opening two Division 2B matches by just one and 10 runs respectively.

goes on for Newbury Cricket Club in Division 3A as they lost by 52 runs against Wargrave.

Newbury managed to get Wargrave all out for 179, with Charlie Anstey and Kevin Mills getting four wickets each.

But they could only score 127 in reply themselves, Rajeev Hanabe doing the best for Newbury with the bat as he reached 40.

Thatcham are up to seventh in Division 2B with 37 points, the same position as Newbury in Division 3A, who have 24 points.

Thatcham return to action this Saturday when they host Yateley.

Newbury have the week off following Yateley 2nds quitting the league, and next play Wokingham 2nds on June 3.

Best ever day in division two for athletes young and old NEWBURY Athletic Club produced a dominant performance to earn their highest ever Southern Athletics League division two score on Sunday.

Competing in Andover, Newbury were streets ahead of the competition, racking up 242 points to beat early league leaders Yeovil Olympiads and London clubs Hillingdon and Herne Hill Harriers.

The throwers were on top form for Newbury, with Helen Broadbridge and Charlotte Payne taking the double victory in all three heavy throws, while Rosie Stanton and Abigail

Livingstone added a second and first in the javelin.

On the men’s side, Jamie Kuehnel and Oliver Hewitt took four wins and three second places between them – Oliver in particular throwing a huge personal best of 39.01m in the discus.

More success came in the track events, with Jess Franklin and Philippa Cass getting a double win in the 5,000m, and Steve Elsmere, Graham Stent, Rebecca Downie and Emily Craggs all triumphing in the steeplechase.

At the other end of the spectrum, veteran Wayne Lillis set a new V50 club record in the 800m, while Matt Davies, Chloe Blair and Izzy Fry also earned victories.

Matt Green notched up two personal bests in the 1,500m and 3,000m, with he and Phil Marshall dipping under the 10 minute barrier for the first time in the latter.

And Mike Robbins won both B string hurdle races for the men to complete a very successful day for Newbury.

Sport Bites Injury woes ATHLETICS: Injuries and exams meant Team Kennet Athletics Club had fewer competitors than normal in their Southern Athletics League match on Sunday, but there were still some good performances from the team.

Alex Hanson picked up a hat-trick of wins in the 800m, 300m and 1,500m, while Peter Saunders added victories in the long jump and triple jump.

Luke Angell won the javelin with a 50m throw.

In the women’s side, Izzy Hole took second in her 1,500m steeplechase debut, while Emily Faulkner broke the club’s under-20 record in the 5,000m.

Mixed results WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: Thames Valley Kings’ division four squad finished their season with a mixed bag of results on Saturday.

Swindon Shock, needing to win to take the title, comfortably beat the Kings 36-18 in their first match of the day.

However they made amends in the second match, beating Sportable Rockets 35-21.

Club captain Wayne Barton said: “Well done to the division four team finishing second in group C. There was some great basketball played at times, and we are already buzzing for next season.”

Trophy winner GOLF: Pete Dye was the winner of the two-round Lambourn Trophy at West Berks Golf Club after beating Patrick Wilmore on countback.

Wilmore had been the clubhouse leader for three hours, but Dye matched his score of 151 to snatch the title after a second round 72.

Elsewhere, Gale and Tom McAuley won the annual Husbands and Wives Trophy with 38 points, while Jane Brackenbury and Renee Wheeler took the Ladies Coronation Foursomes.

In the team events, the scratch team thrashed Newbury and Crookham 7-0, while the Sevens team lost 4-3 away at Cotswolds.

Impressive display from colt brings end-to-end dominance

By Adam Flinn RIBCHESTER led from start to finish as Godolphin’s domination of the £350,000 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes continued at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday.

The Richard Fahey-trained colt was in fi ne form over the straight mile at Newbury, quickly building up a clear advantage by the two furlong marker.

When Ribchester began to drift to the right Lightning Spear threatened a challenge, but in the end it was a decisive three and three quarter length victory for the 7/4 favourite.

The win was done without Ribchester’s intended pacemaker Toscanini, who dropped back in the early stages.

It also means that Ribchester’s owner Godolphin has now had four Lockinge wins in the last five seasons, including the last three.

Fahey said: “It was a huge performance, we felt that there was one in him and it has all come together.

“Toscanini missed the kick so it was plan B, but I always felt that Ribchester could do something like this, which was grand.

“We are happy with where he is. He is good in his mind and this would have done him the world of good.

“If we could get his mind right, we always felt Ribchester would be special - that’s a strong word for a trainer to use but that was a special

performance.”

Breton Rock was third behind Lightning Spear, while Galileo Gold, ridden by Frankie Dettori, could only manage fi fth.

In the rest of Saturday’s running, Hawkbill put in an impressive showing to comfortably win the £100,000 Al Rayyan Stakes.

He was clear of his rivals after entering the straight to easily beat My Dream Boat in second and Midterm in third.

The Shalaa Carnarvon Stakes saw an exciting fi nish, as 40/1 outsider Just An Idea almost caused an upset before falling back to fourth by the end, leaving Visionary to take the win.

In the Al Zubarah London Gold Cup Handicap, Defoe came through the pack strongly in the closing stages to take victory, getting past 7/2 favourite Mucho Applause with half a furlong to go.

Denaar saw some success for Frankie Dettori on Saturday as he triumphed by three quarters of a length from Starlight Mystery in the Olympic Glory Conditions Race.

Natavia ran away with the Haras de Bouquetrot Fillies’ Trial Stakes, whule Withernsea won the last race of the day, the Toronado Handicap.
