Town festival in memory schoolgirl one year on from death

CELEBRATING

LIBERTY EXACTLY one year ago this Tuesday 14-year-old Liberty Baker was walking to school with friends in Witney when a car mounted the pavement and killed her. But instead of being left to mourn and commemorate the anniversary of her death, Liberty’s dad Paul Baker was summoned to court alleged with harassing the family of his daughter’s killer. Mr Baker was due at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Monday but the six-month time window for harassment cases to be followed up had lapsed. Police admitted on Tuesday he should never have been called to court as the time limit had expired and evidence was too fl imsy. Thames Valley Police, Chief Inspector Julian Collinson, said “We understand that this is very difficult for all of those involved

and the officers have ensured this case has been handled as sensitively as possible. “Family liaison officers have supported the Baker family since the tragic loss of their daughter and will continue to.” To celebrate Liberty’s life one year on, a group of friends banded together to launch LibFest this Saturday. The mini festival in The Leys runs from 10am until 10pm and includes her passions of music and sport. Liberty’s dad Paul Baker said the family is still torn apart, but Liberty would have loved the festival. He said: “Its coming up to the anniversary and its been a dreadful year.” • Continues on page 3
