Nando’s adds to restaurants

An image of how the highly-anticipated Phase II of the Orchard Centre could look when complete

By Owen Hughes NANDO’S is among the latest line of retailers preparing to launch at Didcot’s soon-to-be expanded £50million Orchard Centre. The popular Afro-Portuguesestyle chicken restaurant will greet shoppers at the entrance to the new restaurant area, next to a Bistrot Pierre, Loungers cafÊ and Costa Coffee. The chain will occupy the largest space in the restaurant area at 2,637

square foot. High Street jewellery store Ernest Jones, luxury womenswear retailer Mint Velvet, and stationers Paperchase and Smiggle have also taken up spots at the multi-million pound development with many other top brands also rumoured to be moving in. Phase II will be anchored by an M&S Food Hall and the overall expansion will feature seven restaurants and cafĂŠs as well as 21 shops.

H&M, River Island, TK Maxx, Boots, Costa and Starbucks exchanged leases last year as retailers hope to beat the clock before the March target opening date passes. Work began on the Orchard Centre in January 2017 and is due for completion in March this year. South Oxfordshire district councillor Anthony Dearlove said he was “not aware of any delays in the opening of the centre, but that he also “hasn’t heard anything new either.

He said: “I was under the impression that the opening would be spring this year, but I haven’t actually heard ‘February or March time’ as potential opening dates, otherwise I’d be getting concerned. “I’m not sure when we’re next due a meeting with the developers but they have been very good at keeping us informed. A spokesperson for developers Hammerson said: “The Orchard Centre remains on track to open in March.

Ejector seat firm breached safety SOUTH Oxfordshire ejector seat manufacturer Martin-Baker Aircraft has admitted breaching health and safety law over the death of a Red Arrows pilot. Iraq veteran Flt Lt Sean Cunningham died in November 2011 at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire after his ejector seat initiated during pre-ight checks of his Hawk T1 jet while on the ground and stationary. The parachute on the ejector seat failed to deploy and the airman later died in hospital. The statutory director of the Chalgrove-based ďŹ rm, John Martin, pleaded guilty on behalf of the company at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday to a charge under section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. In a statement, the company expressed its condolences to Flt Lt Cunningham’s family and friends. It read: “This [guilty] plea was entered following detailed and lengthy discussions with the Health and Safety Executive which have considerably narrowed the issues from when its investigation ďŹ rst started. “It should be noted that this was an isolated failure relating to the tightening of a nut during maintenance procedures conducted by RAF Aerobatic Team mechanics.â€? The next hearing will be held on February 12. Martin Baker said it would comment further in due course. The ďŹ rm describes itself as the “world’s leading manufacturer of ejection and crashworthy seatsâ€?.
