Mill theatre project will bring arts and activities to Bicester By Samantha McGregor

BANBURY’S Mill Theatre is set to launch a year-long project to bring arts and performances to Bicester. Starting in June, The Mill plans to bring the best from its regular programme to Bicester, culminating in a circus spectacular in summer 2019. It hopes the project will enable the theatre to “engage with new communities in one of the fastest growing towns in Europe”. The project has been funded by grants from Arts Council England and The Foyle Foundation, and is supported by Cherwell District Council. The scheme will also create a new project co-ordinator role to help deliver the programme. The Mill Arts Centre director Georgia Geary said: “This project is a huge opportunity for us to bring high quality, contemporary performances and activities to Bicester – a thriving town that has no dedicated arts provision. “Part of our mission at The Mill is to engage with communities and ensure the arts are accessible to all, and we see the whole of Cherwell district as our community, not just Banbury. “I’m delighted at the calibre of artists that we’ve already managed to attract to the project, and look forward to announcing more over the course

Among the activities planned for The Mill Bicester is monthly Little Stories and Creative Crafts, as well as one-off performances. Already confi rmed to take part in the project is Wriggle Dance Theatre, award-winning performance poet Luke Wright, and the Remarkable Dance Company, which is made up of over 50’s, and will be recruiting more members in Bicester. The Mill will also be setting up a local box office in town. The fi nale for the project will be a residency in the town for Mimbre, an all-female contemporary circus company who recently toured with award -winning act Exploded Circus. As well as bringing their new production to town, Mimbre will deliver workshops for young people.

BANBURY residents have been given a sneak preview of what to expect when the Monte Carlo Rally passes through the town next month. John Lomas and Dan Hunter, of Bicester based Blue Diamond Riley Services, presented their 1949 MG TC car to Cllr Kieron Mallon of Cherwell District Council and Banbury Mayor, Cllr Colin Clarke. The pair will set off from Paisley near Glasgow on January 31, with the 1,500-mile Classique aspect of the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique and Classique rally, stopping at an official passage control in Banbury on February 1 before finishing in Monte Carlo three days later. Mr Lomas said: “This is a fantastic event and a great opportunity to promote vintage cars to the community and enthuse the younger generation.” Cllr Mallon said: “This is a momentous occasion for Banbury and I would encourage everyone to make a conscious effort to come along and be part of this historic event. The Monte Carlo Rallye attracts worldwide attention so we are proud to literally put Banbury on the map.” More than 100 classic and vintage cars will be on show in Bridge Street and Market Place on February 1 between 10am and 3.30pm.
