Grandfather’s legacy lives on despite Britain’s record Games performance

Youngest Olympian commends Team GB WHEN Wallingford rower Ken Lester returned from the Rome Olympics of 1960 at the age of just 13, Team GB brought back a grand total of two medals. This year, Britain’s Olympians surpassed all expectations collecting 67 medals at the Rio Olympics, their greatest haul since 1908. But there is still one record that no Team GB member has yet been able to surpass.

By Dominic Thomas Mr Lester remains the country’s youngest ever male competitor at an Olympic Games. The 69-year-old is now High Steward of Wallingford, President of Wallingford Rowing Club, and married to Mayor of Wallingford Ros Lester. Speaking of the Rio Olympics, the grandfather said: “It’s been wonderful, I’m really pleased, I’ve been watching a lot of it, especially the rowing. Katie Greeves, who won the silver medal in the women’s eight, is the sister of our women’s captain, Caroline, so that was terrific to watch.” Mr Lester joined Wallingford Rowing Club aged 11 and became a cox in the Rome Olympics in the coxed pairs with Jeff Reeves

and Stewart Farquarson. He had coxed Mr Reeves in a skiff regatta the previous year, and afterwards he and Mr Farquarson decided to enter the Olympic trials as a coxed pair. Mr Lester said: “He was looking for a cox and remembered me, so I went along to the trial and we ended up going to the Olympics. I was incredibly lucky.” The trip was Mr Lester’s fi rst time in a foreign country and he has vivid memories of the experience. “We were out there for about three weeks and we just had a wonderful time,” he said. “It was very warm. I just remember walking around the streets all on my own. I also went to see Cassius Clay fight.” The trio competed in two races in the coxed pairs, narrowly missing out on a spot in the fi nal after fi nishing third in their race. VË Í ÖjÄË Ë¬?~jËÏ
