City sees a big drop in carbon emission ENERGY-SAVING projects in Oxford are cutting emissions equivalent to the rate of taking more than 1,500 cars off the roads every year, figures have revealed. The conservation schemes are reducing Oxford’s CO 2 emissions by more than 6,000 tonnes annually, Oxford City Council announced on Monday. The council’s executive board member for a clean and green Oxford, John Tanner, said the city is punching ‘well above its weight’ to fight climate change.
By Dominic Thomas Solar panels, projects to insulate homes better, electric vehicles and energy-efficient boilers for council buildings have all helped bring down emissions. It is estimated the saving from these emissions is the same as taking 1,553 medium-sized cars off the road for a year. Councillor Tanner said: “I know the people of Oxford want to do their bit to tackle climate change. Climate change is probably the biggest threat
to our children and grandchildren, and to our city. “The city council punches well above its weight in tackling climate change but we want to do much more. “We are cutting the city council’s own carbon footprint by five per cent every year because we want to be good example for the rest of the city. “This is why we have teamed up with Oxfordshire’s other district councils to launch a set of proposals to devolve more power to local people and unlock £6 billion of funding.” OxFutures, the council’s main pro-
ject, secured £1.2 million of funding in 2012, and will be used to leverage £18m of funding by the end of this year. OxFutures funds several projects in the city, including Low Carbon Hub, the hydro project at Osney Lock, and solar panels on Larkrise Primary School, Oxford Bus Company and Norbar Torque Tools in Banbury.
