LOCAL campaigners have come out in support of county council plans to upgrade rail stations in Oxfordshire. The issue has reintroduced the prospect of reopening lines in the surrounding towns, such as Witney and Abingdon. Oxfordshire County Council is set to discuss the proposals next week that would see Oxford and Didcot rail stations undergo a major upgrade. The proposals will see extra rail capacity between Oxford and Didcot, new rail services from Oxfordshire to Heathrow Airport and major upgrades to both Oxford’s main rail station and Didcot Parkway. Hugh Jaeger, who helps lead the Witney Oxford Transport group, supports the proposals. “It’s a very big, very ambitious shopping list”, he said, agreeing with all the items on that list but one – the multi-storey car park at Didcot station on the basis there were already enough parking spaces already. One option that has been considered in the past is the reinstatement of the old railway line between Oxford and Witney, or introducing a tramtrain system to run along the A40 corridor. The county council in its scheme for the A40 said it was determined to keep open the option of reopening the railway to Witney, which would use the old route to Witney and then take a new route cross country from Witney to Carterton. Maurizio Fantato, secretary for the Witney Oxford Transport group, said: “We are defi nitely in favour of improving any of the services in and around Oxford”. But he was realistic of the immediacy of any plans involving Witney. He said: “If there was a reopening of the rail services then some of the services focusing on getting into Oxford rail station in the existing circumstances and the type of infrastructure available now then it ËVË Í ÖjÄËË Ë¬?~jËÏ
