BASINGSTOKE’S most vulnerable people are set to be hit hard after the county council announced plans to sanction £120million of new cuts to services.

Hampshire County Council revealed this week that it had “no choice” but to make the savings by 2020 – with children’s services once again being targeted.

The biggest losers from the authority’s proposed medium term fi nancial strategy would be adult health and care, which is being lined up for £55.7m of cuts, at a time when the idea to charge some users of the service is at public consultation.

Children’s services, including child protection and adoption, are also due to be slashed by £30m, while the economy, environment and transport department would be cut by £19m.

The cuts would also see a £15.1m reduction in the service that allocates community grants, with leader Roy Perry

By Christian Wilson telling Monday’s cabinet that any reductions in funding would not be done with “any great joy in our hearts”.

He added: “They’re done because we have that legal obligation, and what we will do our best to do is see that the services are still provided as well as we possible can for the people of Hampshire.”

The council announced last year that £98m of savings would have to be delivered by April 2017, with plans to close all but one of Basingstoke and Deane’s 11 children’s centres to save £8.5m a key part of that.

And with the borough’s frontline services already feeling the strain, the leader of Basingstoke’s Liberal Democrats group has accused the county council of “not wanting to run the services anymore”.

Lorry trip increase past school is given approval A DECISION to allow an increase in the number of lorry trips along a Hatch Warren residential road to a food waste plant has been branded “ludicrous�.

Concerns had been passed onto Hampshire County Council over the amount of trucks travelling through Woodbury Road to the anaerobic digestion plant in Kennel Farm, Dummer.

With St Marks CofE Primary School sitting next to the road, residents and councillors alike felt that the 22 lorries permitted to travel past the site each day was too many and should be reduced for safety reasons.

But the county council last Wednesday granted permission for the maximum amount of HGV trips passing along Woodbury Road to and from the plant to instead be increased to 38 on a temporary basis for the next year.

The authority’s councillor for Basingstoke North West, Stephen Reid, said: “It’s just not right for Hatch Warren. “If there’s a coming together between a lorry and a child, the lorries aren’t going to come second, meaning a child could get seriously hurt, or worse.�

Mr Weller, of Woodstock Mead, said: “If Tamar stuck to the actual terms of the agreement, we could probably live with it as the digester is undoubtedly a good thing, but they have never done so before and I have doubts that they will now. “We’re not talking about Transit vans, these are 42 ton lorries,

enormous things that are driving at supposedly safe school routes. “Tamar have broken every promise before and a leopard doesn’t change its spots.�

The council’s regulatory committee were told to disregard any evidence of previous infringements to conditions from the developer when making its decision – something criticised by borough councillor Terri Reid. “I’m disappointed for residents and for the children who have to cross the road,� said the councillor for Hatch Warren and Beggarwood. “It’s ridiculous that they’ve took no notice of the clear evi-

The change will mean an extra 5,000 truck trips this year to the plant, which currently breaks down 30,000 tonnes of food waste annually.

Tamar commercial director, Richard Brookes, said: “We are working hard to make sure that all vehicles travelling to and from our plant use the correct route and at the right times. “We fully recognise people’s concerns about heavy traffic running through Hatch Warren, and we’ll continue to take prompt action to address any concerns.�

Two men stabbed in Basingstoke underpass TWO men were stabbed during an altercation with a rival group in a Basingstoke underpass last week.

The pair were walking through the subway between Basingstoke Leisure Centre and the Winklebury Estate at around 6.30pm last Thursday when an argument broke out with two other men.

BASINGSTOKE: MPs and councillors have paid their respects to murdered MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox. Mrs Cox was fatally shot, stabbed and kicked multiple times in Birstall, West Yorkshire last Thursday as she prepared to hold a constituency surgery.

Birstall constituent Thomas Mair, 52, has been charged with the murder, with Basingstoke MP Maria Miller taking to Twitter to condemn the person responsible.

She wrote: “This was an appalling attack on Jo Cox, who was going about her work as an MP, supporting her community. “The murder of an MP is an attack on UK democracy.�

BASINGSTOKE AND DEANE: A solar scheme to help reduce Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s energy bills and carbon footprint has begun following the installation of solar panels on five councilowned buildings.

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panel systems, which convert sunlight into electricity even on cloudy days, have now been installed on the roofs of the civic ofďŹ ces in London Road, John Arlott Pavilion, Brighton Hill and Eastrop depots and also Eastrop Boathouse.

A FEMALE Basingstoke police officer who was severely injured during a dangerous 15-minute grappling match with a drunk driver has been nominated for a prestigious policing award.

Hampshire Constabulary’s PC Vikki Sharpe became involved in a violent roadside struggle with Innocent Fowung after she pulled him over for driving erratically on the M3 near Basingstoke on June 18, 2014.

The roads policing officer managed to handcuff one of the driver’s hands to the steering wheel and even held onto the side of the car and used her CS Gas when Fowung turned on the engine and rammed her into the side of her vehicle.

PC Sharpe suffered a broken hand and damage to her ribs, back and shoulder as a result, but still managed to get into her damaged police car, take up pursuit and eventually arrest her attacker before collapsing.

And the Basingstoke and Whitchurch-covering officer’s heroics are to be recognised for the whole country to see next month at the Police Federation’s 21st Police Bravery Awards.

She said: “I’m really honoured to be nominated for such a prestigious award, although I see it as just doing my job.

“The incident took its toll on me both physically and mentally.

“It has made me doubt myself, my abilities and why I am a police officer.”

Fowung, 46, of Deedmore Road in Coventry, received consecutive sentences of 12 months and 10 months last July, while PC Sharpe had to spend three months off work because of the assault.

And with the latest stats showing 1,007 assaults on Hampshire police officers took place last year, the chairman of the county’s police federation, John Apter, was quick to praise the bravery and professionalism of PC Sharpe.

He said: “Police officers perform a difficult and dangerous job and it is never acceptable for an officer to be assaulted while working to protect the public.

“It was a nightmare situation for PC Sharpe to be in on her own, as she went from a routine check to ending up being in a

fight for her life.

“She’s a winner anyway as far as we’re concerned and encapsulates the very best of Hampshire Constabulary.

“Sometimes as a country we tend to focus on the real negative side of policing, but there’s far more good, like the Vikki Sharpes of this world.”

News Bites Child cruelty HAMPSHIRE: The number of child cruelty and neglect cases in Hampshire has increased by 268 per cent in the last three years, new statistics from the NSPCC have revealed.

Hampshire Constabulary recorded a total of 254 cases in 2014/15, compared to the 69 reported in 2012/13.

Voters go to the polls for EU referendum BASINGSTOKE residents will finally have their say today on whether they want to remain or leave the European Union.

Campaigning for both sides has been fierce since a date for the referendum was set in February, with the remain camp claiming that Britain’s place in the EU means more jobs and increased security.

But Vote Leave campaigners believe that leaving the EU, which the UK has been a member of since 1973, will result in millions of pounds being saved each week and greater control over the country’s borders.

An online poll conducted by the Observer saw 80 per cent of the 377 participants say they want to leave, with 19 per cent voting remain and only one per cent undecided.

And the people of Basingstoke and Deane will now get to have their final say as they cast their vote at one of the 116 polling stations across the borough.

A 10-FOOT tall pink robot led a carnival parade through the town centre on Friday to mark the start of the Basingstoke Festival in typically crazy fashion.

The lead-up to the annual summer showpiece has been marked with the appearance of a five-metre dragon, a giant fi re-breathing bird and a mechanical disco turtle over the last couple of years.

And this year’s opening day didn’t disappoint either as Binbot, who is made entirely from recycled materials, walked through the Top of Town towards Eastrop Park, waving to

Friday’s Green at Heartthemed parade marked the start of 24 days of more than 100 different events and performances as part of the fi fth Basingstoke Festival, which is coordinated by the borough council.

A range of different street performances, productions of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the appearance of

Council deputy leader Terri Reid said: “It was just an incredible day and was fantastic to be there. “It was lovely to see so many schoolchildren involved and the robot showed what’s so great about the festival, it’s so quirky, and is something you don’t expect to see. “The festival gets better and better every year and I’d challenge anyone to pick up the festival programme and not fi nd something they want to see.�

BASINGSTOKE: Residents are being urged to join the Ark2016 to run the upcoming Basingstoke Half Marathon.

A team of 30 runners pounded the pavement at the popular annual event last year, raising around ÂŁ9,000 for Ark Cancer Centre Charity and winning the Fastest Charity Team trophy in the process.

And the charity, which is looking to raise £5million to build a cancer treatment centre in Basingstoke, is looking to better that at this year’s race on October 2.

Search begins for this year’s AWE young scientist THE search is on to find 2016’s Young Scientist of the Year in the annual competition run by the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE).

Teachers across Hampshire are being encouraged to nominate pupils who have excelled in a particular science field, and show great enthusiasm for the subject.

This can include pupils who have received outstanding results, regularly attend school clubs, or just have the determination to excel in the field.

Andrew Randewich, AWE chief scientist and competition judge, said: “AWE hopes that this competition will spark an interest in science among pupils across Hampshire.

“At AWE we try to inspire pupils by showing them just how exciting science can be, and I think if we encourage younger pupils then we have a chance of getting them hooked on the subject.”

As well as the AWE Young Scientist of the Year 2016 trophy, the overall winner of the competition will have the opportunity to attend the prestigious Royal Institute Christmas Lectures in London.

Step forward for leisure park plans PLANS to majorly revamp Basingstoke Leisure Park have taken another step forward after councillors agreed to begin drawing up a development agreement for the project last week.

The £200million proposal would see the amount of facilities at the 60-acre site in Worting Road double, including the construction of a brand new aquadrome, dual use ice rink arena and community-use velodrome.

Other changes would see a surfi ng centre, skate park, climbing wall and “survival style” challenges arrive at the park, as well as a 300,000 sq ft designer shopping outlet – bringing over 2,400 new jobs to the area in the process.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council agreed to award the contract for the redevelopment to NewRiver Retail in April, paving the way for the property investor to foot the whole bill for the project.

But concerns from the borough’s Labour group over the inclusion of a retail park in the leisure park plans led to a delay in the process, before the council’s scrutiny committee voted

to continue its discussions with NewRiver Retail on Tuesday night.

Cabinet member for fi nance, service delivery and improvement, Robert Tate, said: “This is a great opportunity to create something excellent for the borough and its residents – bigger and better – and at no cost to the council.

“This project is taking a significant step forward and I look forward to increasingly positive engagement with NewRiver Retail as the scheme develops and to hearing what local people think of the proposals.”

The majority of the current facilities at the leisure park have remained unchanged since they were built in the 1980s and 1990s, with NewRiver drawing up the proposed transformation after discussions with leisure operators.

But following last week’s decision, Basingstoke Labour group called for a rival developer to come forward for the project – insisting that customers would be “poached” by a shopping outlet, to the detriment of the town centre.

Group leader Paul Harvey said:

“We’re really disappointed that the council is not listening as the evidence is clear that there will be significant harm to the town centre if this goes ahead.

“We support the regeneration of the leisure park, but we don’t want a shopping outlet, so the fact that there’s been no competition to NewRiver is wrong.

“It’s perverse that the council can celebrate the opening of Waitrose and John Lewis and then do this, they don’t care about Festival Place or the Top of Town.”

A planning application on the project is expected to be pre-

pared by the end of the year, and sent out to public consultation.

NewRiver Retail property director Allan Lockhart said: “Our aim is to bring excellent new leisure facilities to Basingstoke and we have assembled an internationally renowned leisure-focussed development team to deliver these.

“The scheme has the potential to deliver substantial benefits for the council, local businesses and residents - almost £200m of construction investment, over £500m of economic activity, and the creation of an estimated 2,400 jobs.”

News Bites Care consultation HAMPSHIRE: The county council has opened a period of public consultation on plans to start charging some people who use adult social care.

The Observer reported last week that Hampshire County Council was considering whether to make the change in order to help save £1.5million.

And the authority is now seeking the opinion of residents on the proposals, which include billing people for more than one carer should they require extra help, and charging those at nursing homes for periods of absence.

As many as 12,000 people could be affected by the changes should they be approved, with the council due to assess whether or not residents are financially able to contribute to their care.

MORE than 20 Basingstoke charities and community projects were handed a massive £52,000 boost last week.

Members of The Rotary Club of Basingstoke Deane have been raising the valuable funds over the past 12 months.

And the club presented its fi nal donations for the year to local organisations at its annual charities night on Tuesday, with match-funding ensuring that the overall tally rose to around £75,000.

Rotarians have been raising money through a wide variety of events over the last year, including the annual Rotary International Boxing Night in March, with club president Paul Temple expressing his happiness with the figure.

He said: “I am delighted that the Basingstoke Deane Rotarians have been able to help and support so many good causes and local projects during my 12 months as club president.

“I am also pleased that representatives from many of the wide range of organisations that we have been involved with over the last year were able to attend the charities night.

Nearly 200 caught in road clampdown THE results of a road safety crackdown by police on motorists on the A34 and motorways in Hampshire have been released.

In total 187 drivers were caught committing various offences on major roads across the county between Monday, June 6 and Friday, June 10.

Three police vehicles patrolled the M27, M3, A34, M40, M4, M275 and M271 as part of the clampdown, which saw a focus on motorists who appeared distracted at the wheel.

A total of 147 drivers were seen using mobile phones while driving as part of the Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police-led Operation Tramline.

Police also stopped 18 drivers who were not in proper control for other reasons, including one offender who was reading a novel as they drove along the M271.

And six were not wearing a seatbelt, eight were deemed to be carelessly driving, while one person was observed and dealt with for committing an “indecent act” as they drove at speed on the M40.

Sergeant Paul Diamond, from the Roads Policing Commerical Vehicle Unit, said: “We want to keep these people out of court just as much as we want to prevent casualties.”

News Bites Brain singing BASINGSTOKE: An Alzheimer’s Society service for people with dementia in Basingstoke has celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Singing for the Brain is a social activity for people with dementia and their carers, enabling them to express themselves and sing with others in a similar situation.

The service held its first sessions at St Mary’s in old Basing in March 2006, with the charity’s services manager for North Hampshire, Kelly Inwood, admitting that it seemed “hardly a moment had passed” in that time.

She said: “Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music can sometimes still be recalled - if only for a short while.

“The sessions help people with dementia communicate, improving their mood and leaving them feeling good about themselves.”

Charity aims to catch town’s most wanted BASINGSTOKE residents got the chance to see the most wanted criminals currently on the run on their streets as part of a countywide appeal last week.

Independent charity Crimestoppers achieved huge success from a similar ‘Most Wanted’ campaign in March, as over half of the individuals who appeared on the digital van were arrested thanks to new information.

And Crimestoppers are hoping that the new scheme will help

Charity regional manager Julia Hughes said: “Last time the digital van came to Hampshire we received 28 pieces of information from the public on wanted individuals.

“Crimestoppers’ Most Wanted works because people understand they can safely and anonymously speak up about criminals without having their identities revealed or having to go to court.”

A total of five suspects from Basingstoke are on the current list of over 100 from across Hampshire.

Eric Coffey, 21, is wanted for

a domestic violence charge in Winchester on May 12, while Aurel Ghiocel, 29, is wanted for an attempted robbery in Winchester Road on May 6, 2014.

David Hall, 29, is wanted for sexual offences on January 26 last year, while Jason Andrews, 45, is being sought for supplying Class A drugs in Liphook on February 26 last year.

And David Keable, 50, is also wanted on warrant for an assault in Melrose Walk on January 1.

Over 100 faces are listed on the ‘Most Wanted’ gallery for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with crimes ranging from burglary, drugs, criminal damage, and assault.

Store reopens BASINGSTOKE: The Lidl store in Worting Road reopened its doors to Basingstoke residents last Thursday for the first time since the end of April.

Police and crime commissioner Michael Lane said: “I am delighted to support this Crimestoppers initiative and am heartened to see how the last appeal helped to raise awareness.

“This campaign has allowed the public to be engaged in the work of the police to bring criminals to justice.”

Rebecca Colvin, intelligence development manager for Hampshire Constabulary, said: “The anonymous service provided by the charity Crimestoppers and their Most Wanted gallery together with the courage of the local people to speak up about local criminals, is an integral means of law enforcement swiftly tracking down some wanted individuals.”

Bowplex gets new £300,000 US revamp A MAJOR £300,000 redevelopment of Basingstoke’s Bowlplex is due to take place next month.

The popular alley, based at Basingstoke Leisure Park, is to get a complete refurbishment and rebrand as it is relaunched as Hollywood Bowl.

Work has already begun at the centre, which will remain open for the duration of the redevelopment, ahead of the work being completed on July 7.

A brand new Hollywood Diner and American bar are part of the transformation, while food will also be delivered directly to the 26 new-look lanes while people play to keep in line with the new US style.

The centre’s amusement area has also been given a revamp, with both modern and retro games included in the plans as well as two brand new pool tables.

General manager Shalene Stephens said: “We’re incredibly excited about the transformation taking place over the coming month and can’t wait to bring the full Hollywood Bowl experience to both new and existing customers.

“The people of Basingstoke deserve to have a fantastic bowling centre on their doorstep and we’re looking forward to exceeding their expectations with top class amenities.”

KNIFE amnesty bins have been placed inside Basingstoke police station as part of a national campaign to encourage residents to safely dispose of the blades.

The London Road-based station is one of several across Hampshire to have been chosen to host the bins as part of anti-knife crime scheme Operation Sceptre.

Members of the public will be able to dispose of knives and other bladed articles in the amnesty boxes without fear of repercussions or questioning from the police, in order to help take weapons off the street.

Hampshire Constabulary’s Chief Inspector Claire Taylor said: “Fortunately gang related knife crime is very rare in Hampshire.

“We know people carry knives for many reasons including fear, or because they think it will protect them.

“However, in reality carrying a knife puts them at greater risk of being seriously injured or killed, not to mention being arrested for possession of a bladed article.”

Being caught carrying a knife can carry a prison sentence of up to four years, even if it is not used.

And Hampshire police are hoping that the launch of Operation Sceptre will help deter residents, as well as educating people about the dangers associated with knives.

Ch Insp Taylor added: “This amnesty is your chance to hand unlawful weapons in and walk away without prosecution and be free from the fear you could be putting yours and your loved ones lives at risk.

“I would urge you to take this opportunity to rid yourselves of any illegal weapons, as we are continually developing intelligence on those believed to be carrying knives or bladed articles.

“We will take a robust approach to anyone found to be illegally in possession of a knife or bladed article on the streets.”

Miss Basingstoke secures final spot

A BASINGSTOKE woman will go head to head against the top beauty queens in the country to be named Miss England next month after reaching the final of the competition.

Nicola Ascroft secured her place at the fi nals of the beauty pageant after being crowned Charity Queen at the semi-fi nal stage of the competition on June 11.

The current Miss Basingstoke beat 70 other girls to impress the judges with her charitable work at the event in Kelham Hall and Country Park in Nottinghamshire.

And having just missed out on a place in the fi nal last year, the 22-year-old was quick to express her delight at securing her place as one of the 50 fi nalists at the show-

piece in Southport on July 19.

She said: “I couldn’t be any prouder to be a part of the prestigious Miss England organisation and the ethos it stands for.

“It has changed me for the better; my confidence has grown, charity work has bloomed, and it has enabled me to become the best version of myself.”

Nicola has organised a number of fundraising events over the last few months to raise money for charity Beauty With A Purpose, and will host a race night at The Four Hourseshoes in Sherfield-on-Lodden on July 15.

She added: “For me, Charity Queen is the most important award, as it shows hard work, passion and dedication.”

News Bites Bike warning HAMPSHIRE: The county council has pleaded with motorists to take longer to look for motorbikes at junctions this summer.

More motorcyclists are expected to take to the roads in Hampshire and beyond as the weather gets warmer.

Riders account for a very small percentage of road traffic, but are still at risk, with 158 motorcyclists either seriously injured or killed in Hampshire last year – a drop of 20 on the previous year.

And Hampshire County Council is hoping to reduce this number substantially still, by launching its ‘Think Bike Think Biker’ campaign.

Executive member for environment and transport, Rob Humby, said: “Safety is a priority for the authority, and we are committed to doing all we can to encourage everyone to use Hampshire’s roads safely.”

Shakespeare’s iconic tale IT’S regarded as one of the greatest love stories of all time.

A young man and woman from rival families fall in love and try and keep their relationship a secret.

And the classic tale is being retold with an ‘80s twist as ‘Romeo and Juliet’ arrives at The Haymarket in Basingstoke on Thursday, July 7.

The play is performed by a cast of students from the Basingstoke Youth Theatre and Proteus Theatre Company.

And with the show only at the Wote Street venue for one night, Reuben Overton, who plays Romeo, and Maebh Howell, who plays Juliet, hopes they can give the audience a show to remember.

“It is an ‘80s take on Shakespeare’s emotion fi lled masterpiece,” Maebh told the Observer.

I’ve performed there twice, and I am defi nitely pleased to be back.

Haymarket shows are my favourite to be in.

“I have been with the Basingstoke Youth Theatre for six years and it has been really fun.

“I love drama and action and Romeo and Juliet is a great opportunity for me.”

Reuben added: “I have performed at the Haymarket once before in ‘Oliver!’,

The world’s most famous love-story was fi rst published in 1597, where it has since been adapted countless times.

The most notable adaptation of recent years was the 1996 movie which starred Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, which had a modern slant.

And with this version of the play having an ‘80s theme, Rueben and Maebh hope they can encourage fellow youngsters in the audience to join their respective drama clubs.

“We are making the story more accessible and we’re breaking it down so the language is easier to understand,” Maebh said.

“Shakespeare is defi nitely becoming more popular.

“There is lots of work out there aimed at promoting Shakespeare to younger audiences, for example in movies.

“Plus, I love Shakespeare.”

Reuben added: “We have made the play fun and funny and we are using performance skills to make it funny.”

Tickets cost £10 or £8 for under 16s, full-time students and over 65s.

The play will begin at 7.30pm.

The singers also appeared on the ITV show ‘The Choir That Rocks’, and raised over £1million for charity.

Tickets cost £15, with the concert starting at 8pm.

Basingstoke blues LIVE MUSIC: The Blues Band will be in Basingstoke on Thursday, June 30.

The quintet, who formed in 1979, will play tunes off their 20 studio albums at The Haymarket as they embark on their UK tour.

Tickets cost £21, while the gig will start at 7.30pm.

“I think of myself as a guitar player, and there will be a lot of that too on the night.”

As a singer-songwriter who has worked with hundreds of musicians during his career, Andy will look back at his time in the music industry with fond memories.

Since bursting onto the scene back in 1966, the musician has travelled all over the world and has worked with many big names, releasing 10 studio albums along the way.

And Andy revealed that it was down to his own persistence, hard work and gumption that helped him became a musician within the public eye, and hopes he can inspire a younger generation of performers who want to be successful.

“I have worked with nearly everybody I’ve ever wanted to work with,” he said.

“I’m still working with Eric Clapton and that’s really special.

“Bill Wyman is a fantastic man who I have worked for 24 years with. He is also a really good friend.

“But I’ve also worked with George Harrison, so I’m very lucky.”

Andy continued: “I didn’t listen to any advice as I’ve always had belief.

“This was a belief I don’t have now… funny that.

“And people who are usually on a mission tend not to listen, but you must practice, practice, practice and do some more practicing.

“There are very few exceptions to this rule.”

Sunday’s gig will start at 7pm and tickets cost £21.

Brass yourselves FESTIVAL: As part of the Hampshire Festival of Brass, the Hampshire County Youth Bands will be arriving at The Anvil on Sunday, June 26.

The three groups of the Hampshire County Youth, the Hampshire County Training and the Hampshire County Junior Bands will all team up to showcase tunes they have been practicing on over the last few months.

Tickets cost £6 and the gig will start at 3pm.

Robbie tribute act LIVE MUSIC: A Robbie Williams tribute act will be at The Raven in Hook tomorrow night, Friday, June 24.

Blobbie Williams along with DJ Tony Williams come to the Station Road to perform tunes such as, ‘Let Me Entertain You’, ‘Angles’, ‘Candy’ and many more.

Bountymen bowl over Liphook to pinch win Champions Trophy woe for hockey star ALEX Danson was unable to inspire at the Hockey Champions Trophy as Great Britain women were handed dispiriting defeats to the Netherlands and New Zealand.

The Odiham hockey star didn’t manage to get on the scoreboard in either game to leave the hosts well behind the chasing pack after failing to win any of their opening three matches.

Early pace setters the Oranje made light work of Danson and co on Sunday and stormed into a 1-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter through a Lidewij Welten penalty corner.

And the Dutch took the sting out of the contest midway through the fi nal quarter to put the game out of sight at 2-0 through another penalty corner, this time from Maartje Paumen.

Things didn’t get any better for GB on Tuesday night against New Zealand, as they found themselves behind to a great individual goal from Stacey Michelsen just before half-time.

And a great save by Blacksticks keeper Sally Rutherford late on denied a Danson deflected effort to ensure a second loss in the space of a few days.

“The tournament has only just begun and there’s a long way to go yet,” said Danson.

“We train for tough tournaments like this, so we’re physically in very good shape.

“We’re fit enough, strong enough and good enough to bounce back from these tough games, so we’ll come out fighting for the next match.”

GB will return to action later today when they face USA.

But a priceless 54 from Chris Jolley helped save the host’s innings to ensure when the fi nal wicket came, they had pushed the score up past the 150-mark.

Two quick fi re wickets from Stokes (3-40) and Martyn James (2-25) ensured that the Liphook innings got off to as poor a start as Basingstoke’s to this time leave them on 20-2.

And skipper Harry Munt was then sent walking without registering a single run, as he was clean bowled by James.

The fast bowler and Stokes continued to tear through the visitors’ batting line up after that, but were once again reliant on their teammate Jolley to land the knock out punch in their favour.

Dan Wreen (20) and especially Suman Ganguly (43) put up some resistance for Liphook, but both fell to the bowling of Jolley to leave them on 108-8.

And Basingstoke made short change of the rest of the tail end after that as Graham Porter, Julin and Ashley Neal each claimed their only wickets of the match to end the tie.

The Bountymen are next in league action on Saturday when they will travel to face Bournemouth at Chapel Gate.

Daisy dominates Scottish Grand Prix BASINGSTOKE powerboat racer Daisy Coleman put in a storming performance over the weekend to move clear at the top of the P1 Superstock standings.

The co-pilot claimed three wins in total over the two-day event at Greenock Esplanade to take overall victory in the fi rst ever P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea. Around 20,000 people lined the boardwalk in Inverclyde on the Saturday as the second round of the UK season got underway in perfect conditions.

Daisy, who was accompanied by driving brother Sam as part of team Pertemps Network, went into the round on the back of a strong second-placed

display in terrible weather in Scarborough.

But after battling their way to third place in the opening race of the opening day, the duo then took control to win both of the next two races and take a big lead into Sunday.

The heavens opened and the mist descended on Sunday to majorly disrupt the racing schedule and allow only one P1 Superstock race to take place.

But that didn’t stop Pertemps Network from taking the chequered flag fi rst, to leave the brother and sister crew 21 points clear of their nearest rivals in the official standings going into the next event in Gosport on July 9.

Popley resident Daisy said:

“Going into the event we were a little unsure how we would fare, knowing we could hold our own in the rough as we proved in Scarborough.

“And moving onto the Sunday

we knew the pressure would be on to maintain our lead.

“But we’re over the moon to be on the top step of the podium and to now be leading the championship going into Gosport.”

COLLARD CLOSES IN ON CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER ROB Collard “fought like a lion” to claim his second win of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) season in Croft on Sunday.

The Hook racer showed all of his experience to make the most of a collision between Subaru pairing Colin Turkington and Jason Plato half way through race two.

And after reacting before his West Surrey Racing (WSR) teammate Jack Goff to capitalise on the mistake in front of him, Collard punished his rivals to hold on and take the chequered flag.

“If in doubt, flat out,” said Collard.

“I was boxed in behind Jack Goff but then the two Subarus touched and a gap appeared.

“It’s a great result for the whole team and really good for our championship.”

The 47-year-old didn’t have things all his own way on the Yorkshire track as he looked to make up for a frustrating showing at Oulton Park two weeks earlier that didn’t see him claim the points tally he deserved.

A misjudged move from Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Matt Neal ruined both his and Collard’s qualifying session on Saturday, as Neal’s Honda Civic Type R clipped the WSR BMW, despite being given enough room to pass cleanly.

That ensured Collard started race one back in 13th spot, with the veteran racer showing good

speed to eventually move up to take seventh and become the highest fi nisher on the hardcompound tyres.

And after race two’s heroics, he then put in another solid performance to move up from eighth on the starting grid to claim fourth in the fi nal race of the day after winning his personal duel with Team BMR’s Turkington.

The weekend’s results mean that Collard is now second in the official standings at the halfway point of the BTCC season, just 12 behind WSR teammate Sam Tordoff.

And having never claimed the title in his long career, Collard insisted that moving up the table on the weekend he marked his 400th BTCC start was “fantastic”.
