AN AGREEMENT to allow some Basingstoke and Deane residents to be able to use Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the county border in West Berkshire is being finalised.

As of next Monday residents from across the borough will not be allowed to use either of the tips in Newbury or Padworth, due to West Berkshire Council introducing a permit scheme for locals only.

They will instead have to travel much further to use Basingstoke’s HWRC in Wade Road, following Hampshire’s decision not to pay £200,000 to West Berkshire for the privilege last year.

Basingstoke and Deane’s council and Hampshire clashed over the “waste war” on Monday, with the borough insisting Hampshire had “let down” its residents, and the county then attacking them right back for being “motivated” by making “political statements”.

But both authorities then announced the next day that an interim solution was close to being agreed that will allow residents most affected by the change in north east Hampshire to also be provided with waste permits.

The permits won’t be available for a few weeks after West Berkshire’s permit scheme starts on Monday however.

Captain Ketch completes coastal cycle challenge Famous friend of charity is honoured A FAMOUS patron for a Sutton-Scotney children’s hospice has been handed a national charity award.

Newsreader Alastair Stewart OBE played a huge role in Naomi House and Jacksplace’s Caterpillar Appeal to help raise £4million to fully refurbish and transform the centres.

Alastair was on hand to unveil the state-of-the-art new facility last September, which included the creation of a new ‘butterfly’ bereavement suite for families, and a new hydrotherapy pool.

And after helping the hospice to achieve its fundraising target, the 64-yearold was named Celebrity Charity Champion 2016 at the Third Sector Awards in London, held last Wednesday night.

Naomi House and Jacksplace marketing manager Keith Wilson said: “I’ve never met anyone quite like Alastair. “His passion and enthusiasm for Naomi House and Jacksplace knows no bounds, and we know that if we ever need his help we need only pick up the phone. “He really has gone above and beyond that which is expected of a charity patron, and we are delighted he has been recognised as 2016’s Celebrity Charity Champion.�

By Christian Wilson BASINGSTOKE’S Captain Ketch finally set foot back in his home county on Tuesday – a full 37 days after setting off on his daring cycle around Britain.

The 34-year-old’s amazing feat saw him travel a massive 3,000 miles in total as he followed the coast line to fi nish where he started off in Havant.

It would be fair to say that the professional motivational speaker will have more material to use now, due to the completion of this challenge representing a big monkey off his back.

Just over a year ago, Captain Ketch, real name James Ketchell, seemed like the invincible man, having successfully managed to cycle 18,000 miles around the world, climbed Mount Everest, and rowed across the Atlantic Ocean.

After seeing his next three fundraisers to row the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic again, and around the coast of Britain, all end in him being rescued out at sea though, this image was slightly tarnished.

But James hopes that the story of his fightback from adversity will inspire others.

MAJOR works to improve two Basingstoke roundabouts is due to start at the beginning of next year.

The county council this week agreed to sanction £10.6million plans to help reduce congestion at the A33 Crockford and Binfields roundabouts.

Changes to both include widening the road on the roundabouts and existing approach roads, installing new traffic signals, upgrading pedestrian and cycle facilities, and improving drainage works.

A major part of the improvements will centre around addressing the root cause of the flooding seen last week between the roundabouts, stemming from a balancing pond north of the A33.

Investigations have already been undertaken into the implications the extra drainage from the scheme could have on the balancing pond, with steps therefore set to be taken to widen and line the pond, while creating a new drainage system.

MP calls for reaction to abuse report MARIA Miller has called on the Government to “listen and act” after a report on domestic abuse was released.

The Basingstoke MP was speaking during a House of Commons debate last week on domestic abuse victims in law courts.

Findings from the Women’s Aid Nineteen Child Homicides report revealed how the killings of 19 children by abusers had been made possible through unsafe child contact arrangements.

The report also recommended that further deaths could be avoided by putting children fi rst in family courts and providing urgent implementation of existing laws.

And speaking in Parliament last Thursday, Mrs Miller called for assurances to be made that special measures would be routinely available in family court proceedings.

She said: “It is clear that family courts are regularly not protecting women and children in the way that we all want them to, and the way that the Government want them to. We need an end to the cross-examination of survivors of domestic violence by their alleged abusers.”

Around 1,300 people took on the challenge for last year’s event, with runners snaking through Cliddesden, Broadmere and Ellisfield during the 13.1-mile run.

company Eli Lilly in Chapel Gate in May. The project to develop 578 new homes on the 26-acre site, off Kingsclere Road, is now being prepared for construction, two years after it was granted outline planning permission by the authority.

And it is the assignment of 230 homes for affordable housing as part of the development that was the subject of most praise from Basingstoke MP Maria Miller, who visited the site on Friday.

She said: “This new housing development makes good use of previously developed land, and I am pleased to see that it also includes homes suitable for families as well as smaller properties.

“During my visit, I have highlighted the need for new build homes to meet the highest standards both in terms of build quality and sustainability.

“The Government’s housing priority is to deliver more affordable homes to buy and to rent, and this helps to achieve this.

“It is also encouraging to see that many of the homes will be available for people using

the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, which has already helped hundreds of Basingstoke residents to achieve their aspirations of having the security and stability of owning their own homes.”

A total of 247 houses and 275 apartments, ranging from onebed to four-bed, will be built as part of the development, as well as a huge communal open space area.

The white Eli Lilly building will also not be demolished as part of the project, which will be jointly completed by developers Sentinel Housing Association and Barratt Homes.

Sentinel development and regeneration director Mike Shepherd said: “Chapel Gate is a great example of how we are working with the private sector to deliver a quality product to home buyers, shared owners and people who need affordable housing.”

Lynnette St Quintin, sales director for Barratt, added: “Chapel Gate is one of those developments that ticks all the boxes and as a result we have already received a lot of interest from local homebuyers.”

Hospital chief to retire from post

Safety advice for freshers FIRST year students at Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) were handed USB sticks to help them stay safe online this week.

Members of the Hampshire Youth Commission gave youngsters the free devices containing advice on how to stay out of danger online during the college’s ‘Freshers’ Fayre’ for new students yesterday.

The handout was organised by children’s charity NSPCC, with the sticks being loaded with hyperlinks to advice about bullying, cyberbullying, sexting, and revenge porn.

Head of child online safety, Julia Fossi, said: “We know online safety is a major concern for children and young people, not just parents, because that is what they tell us.

“In a world where an increasing amount of our time is spent online, it is only right that people of all ages learn more about keeping safe on the web.”

The Youth Commission, which is run by Hampshire’s police and crime commissioner (PCC), got involved as part of its internet safety campaign Go FISH (Find Internet Safety Help).

Commissioner Michael Lane said: “Alongside the meaningful benefits, the use of technology comes with some risks, including risks of inappropriate behaviours.”

THE chief executive of the trust that runs Basingstoke’s hospital is stepping down from her role to retire by the end of the year.

Mary Edwards is leaving the position she has held within Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) for the last 13 years.

In total she has spent 21 years with HHFT, originally taking up the position of director of nursing, before leading the organisation as it became an NHS Foundation Trust for the fi rst time four years ago.

The board has launched the search for a new chief executive to take over in the role by the end of the year, with Mrs Edwards wishing her replacement well.

She said: “Deciding to retire after so many years of service was tough, because of the loyalty I feel to the staff, and because I recognise the huge commitment shown by all our staff to our patients.

“After a lot of thought and discussion with my husband, we have decided to prioritise our plans for retirement together.

“I know whoever replaces me will have the same belief in our staff, and the same focus on patient care.”

News Bites Touching tribute TADLEY: Tributes have been paid following the death of one of Tadley’s representatives on the borough council.

Councillor for Tadley South Rob Musson sadly passed away on Wednesday, September 7 at the age of 63.

The granddad of nine was first elected to represent the ward in 2007, with council leader Clive Sanders praising his “unique ability” as a councillor.

He said: “Rob was a very well regarded councillor in the borough, not only dedicated to serving the Tadley South community he represented but also by devoting time to support other organisations.

“But most of all he was just a good person to have around who contributed so much.”

News Bites Theft warning BASINGSTOKE: Police have issued advice to Basingstoke residents to help stop bike thieves.

There has been a rise in bike thefts across the Basingstoke area over the last week, with two reported incidents in Oakley last Tuesday alone.

In a bid to curb the trend, Hampshire Constabulary has urged riders to always lock their bike through the frame to a bike rack when leaving it in a public place, and park it in a well-lit busy area covered by CCTV. Police have also advised residents to register their bike for free at immobilise.com, to help them reunite stolen property with its rightful owner.

Marking 40 years BASINGSTOKE: An electricity company worker from Basingstoke who helped during the clear-up in the aftermaths of an IRA terrorist attack 23 years ago is celebrating 40 years at the same firm.

Ray Corbishley, 59, has worked for network operator UK Power Networks since 1976, and was involved in responding to the Bishopsgate bombing in London in 1993.

He was also on site for the 1997 Ladbroke Grove train crash that killed 31 people, checking whether the trackside cables still worked.

M3 service station rat run claim is rebuffed DEVELOPERS have promised plans to build a motorway service station to the south of Basingstoke will “never” spark a rat run of cars through Hatch Warren.

A planning application is being prepared for a new service station containing fuelling facilities, shops, and parking at Kennel Farm, on the Dummer and Farleigh Wallop boundary.

The proposed site on the M3 between Junction 6 and Junction 7 would be around the size of seven football pitches, and would sit between the services at Shroner Wood in Winchester, and Fleet.

Concerns have been raised that the development would see more traffic pass through Hatch Warren, to go on top of the high number of lorry trips along Woodbury Road to the anaerobic digestion plant in Kennel Farm.

But applicants Applegreen PLC have moved quickly to rule this out, instead insisting that the only access to the services would be from the M3 itself.

Director Eugene Moore said: “There are no plans for this to be a backdoor to Hatch Warren.

“While I can understand the concerns, I can assure residents that this will live off motorway

traffic, not local traffic, and will never be a rat run through Hatch Warren.”

Mr Moore also claimed that 200 new jobs would be created at the site, which would include spaces for 245 cars and 22 trucks.

Applegreen held a drop-in event at Hatch Warren Community Centre on Wednesday last week – giving the public a chance to ask them questions about the proposal.

Residents questioned the need

for a new motorway services station, because the one at Fleet is nine miles away.

Pat Jupp, 74, of Whitgift Close, in Beggarwood, said: “The field is right at the back of my house, and my concern is over the noise and light that this will create.

“There’s one at Fleet, and one at Winchester, so I don’t know what makes them feel that they need one in the middle.”

Sam Weller, of Woodstock Mead, in Hatch Warren, said: “This is defi nitely not necessary – how could it be?

“They said there would be

no chance at all of rear access to the site though, which was my main concern, although we’ve had experiences with the digester that have made me very cynical.”

Hatch Warren and Beggarwood councillor Terri Reid also attended the event, and warned that the proposal, coupled with other developments, was leading to a “complete overload” in the area.

She added: “Residents are fed up because the area seems to be a bit of a dumping ground at the moment.”

Council makes pledge to fight food waste HAMPSHIRE County Council has signed up to a commitment to help make food and drink production and consumption more sustainable.

The authority has joined up with the county’s waste partnership Project Integra to see how they can help people avoid throwing unused food away.

Hampshire will also work with international companies such as Waitrose, Nestle and Pizza Hut as part of the 2025 Courtauld Commitment, which aims to reduce the volume of waste by 20 per cent in the next nine years.

By being part of this wider network of over 100 businesses and local authorities, Hampshire will have access to funding to launch initiatives to prevent food waste.

The council’s ‘Smart Living’ campaign has already contributed to a reduction of 7,600 tonnes of overall household waste in the last year, with member for economy and transport, Cllr Rob Humby, looking to increase this figure.

He said: “The shocking facts are that, for every two tonnes we eat, another tonne is wasted.

“We fully support this new commitment and we are keen to work with other organisations to reduce waste in the food chain.”

News Bites Notts knocks OVERTON: Residents have been urged by police not to buy household products on their doorsteps from a notorious group.

A group of salesman selling products from an employer based in Nottingham, known as the “Nottingham Knockers’, are understood to have been visiting houses in Overton.

The doorstep traders claim to be ex-convicts attempting to mend their ways through a rehabilitation scheme, but police have assured residents that this is not the case.

PCSO Emma Page said: “Please do not buy or sell on the doorstep, and warn your neighbours, particularly elderly or vulnerable neighbours, not to open the door to strangers.�

Mill mischief WHITCHURCH: A triggered alarm helped stop the 200-year-old Whitchurch Silk Mill from being burgled last Monday.

Thieves managed to gain access to the historic mill, after prying open its outer doors, before then managing to enter the main mill.

The incident took place some time between 12.05am and 12.35am, with the offenders then eeing empty handed after triggering the alarm.

A SCHEME to give businesses in the Top of Town a helping hand to make improvements to their premises was launched this week.

Basingstoke’s council is now offering grants of up to £7,500 to cover up to half the costs of work to improve the appearances of small businesses in the historic heart of the town.

Independent traders with shops and offices facing onto London Street, Winchester Street, Church Street, Winton Square, Cross Street, Wote Street and Market Place are all eligible for the cash boost.

Businesses can also apply for a grant of £500 for specialist support to help their companies grow, as part of the third phase of the council’s rejuvenation of the town centre.

Nine different Top of Town traders were successfully awarded grants as part of the project last year, including Foyles Newsagents, in London Street, who used the money to make repairs to the shop front.

And the council’s lead on Top of Town regeneration, Terri Reid, called on Basingstoke’s businesses to take advantage of the grants to help brighten up the area. “We’re delighted to continue supporting businesses in the Top of Town through our town centre improvement programme,� said Cllr Reid. “By enabling local traders to repair and upgrade their premises, we’re helping to make our town’s historic heart a more attractive shopping and leisure destination. “The Top of Town grant scheme has now been expanded to include interiors and business support, and I urge local owners to apply for the funding. “It will make a real difference to your business and create a nicer environment for all.�

Start-up firm finds success in raising funds A BASINGSTOKE startup business has raised an impressive six-figure investment in just over a year.

Small-scale networks cybersecurity specialists RazorSecure joined university business incubator SETsquared at its hub in Basing View in March last year.

A total of £150,000 of funding has been contributed to the start-up from lead investors Breed Reply, and the Enterprise M3 LEP since taking part in the partnership’s entrepreneurship programme.

The Basingstoke-based programme is supported by the borough council, as part of a partnership between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton, and Surrey, and covers all of the essential elements of starting a business.

Simon Bond, innovation director at SETSquared, said: “We’re delighted for RazorSecure, but not at all surprised that the potential for this company and its technology have been recognised by investors.”

RazorSecure CEO Alex Cowan said: “The support the company has received from SETsquared has been incredible. The investment we’ve raised will allow us to properly kick off with the next stage of the business.”

THE leaders of the borough and county councils have signed a partnership agreement for a proposed 3,400home development on the edge of Basingstoke.

The local authorities are joint owners of a 999-year lease on the Manydown site to the west of the town, and are expecting to draw up a planning application by the start of next year.

The project is a key part of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s approved local plan, and would also include a secondary school, two primary schools, a country park and a link road between the A339 and the B3400.

A consultation on the proposed masterplan is running until October 13.

Council leader Clive Sanders has pledged to develop Manydown in a well-designed and planned way.

“This is an important partnership that will deliver muchneeded homes for the borough at Manydown,” said Cllr Sanders.

“It must be developed in a way that creates a community where any of us would be proud to live.

then see their aspirations realised to climb up that ladder, as their family circumstances progress.

“And then as they enter the later years of their life to also make it possible to fi nd somewhere where they can adjust their way of living to reflect their changing needs, without moving away from family and friends.

“This is a joint and formal commitment by both councils to continuing to work in an effective partnership to take positive action together to making this aspirational vision for Manydown a reality.”

Both the councils will be hosting their fi nal two drop-in events for residents to have their say on the plans over the next two days.

The fi rst will take place tomorrow at Oakley Village Hall, in Andover Road, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm, while the Basingstoke Sea Cadets and Community Centre, in Winklebury, will host a drop-in from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday.

Fresh take on a classic PUPPETRY, family fun and imagination – those are the only three ingredients you need when ‘The Rattler’ visits The Haymarket in Basingstoke on Saturday, September 24.

An adaptation of The Brothers Grimm’s famous 1812 story ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, ‘The Rattler’ tells the story of Alyson, a young spinner who longs of escaping her life of poverty.

Suitable for children aged seven and above, ‘The Rattler’ was written by Martin Riley, with the music composed

by Stephen Deazley. Performed by the Mahogany Opera Group Theatre Company, the show features puppets, which took about a year to make.

After its successful premiere at the Southbank Centre in London last spring, Frederic believes that the children’s imagination will take over as they look on the puppets as real people.

The production will also include a number of opera pieces, something that Frederic hopes will intrigue the children, as some of them might not have encountered it before.

“It’s not opera in the way people might instinctively think,” he said. “’The Rattler’ is full of lively, energetic and folksy music, and plenty of opportunities to join in.

“We’ve created the show specifically for children, and young people have helped us put the piece together.

“Audience members have told us that they’ve been humming the tunes from the show all the way home.

Tickets for the 90-minute show cost £10 and it will start at 3pm.

Derren set to show a different side FOR years, the UK has been stunned by some of the tricks by mentalist Derren Brown.

The 45-yearold from Surrey burst on to our TV screens back in 2000 with his show ‘Derren Brown: Mind Control’, where his mind reading and hypnotising skills caught the eye.

But when he appears at The Anvil in Basingstoke on Sunday, September 25, with his ‘No Tricks: An Evening with Derren Brown’ show, the audience at the Churchill Way venue will hear the illusionist talk about his new book, ‘Happy’.

Derren said: “The notions of positive thinking and goal-setting have always sat uncomfortably with me and, I’m convinced, lead more often to anxiety than happiness.

“There may not be an easy secret to happiness, but there are effective ways we can approach it indirectly, or even, perhaps, deciding it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”

The show starts at 7.30pm.

Dave takes on new solo tour

HE is best known for being the main face of the rock band InMe. But lead singer Dave McPherson decided to take a break from the group and is embarking on a solo tour across the UK. It will arrive at The Sanctuary in Basingstoke tomorrow night, Friday, September 23.

Still an active member of InMe, Dave has released a combined total of 10 albums both as a solo artist and as a band member.

With this being his debut show at the London Street venue, the 33-year-old hopes he can gain more fans with his self-penned folk and rock tunes.

“This is just a solo show but I’m bringing some good friends along, Marc Halls and Jakob Deist,” he told the Observer.

“I’ll be playing some new material, plus I’m trying out a new idea where I combine earlier songs into medleys.

“It’s really fun and means I can play more tunes.”

The 33-year-old comes to Basingstoke following the release of his fourth solo album ‘Living A Life Without The F’ last year, with the musician admitting that the record was ‘dark’ as it touches on a number of issues such as alcoholism, addiction and depression.

Despite that, Dave insisted that the tracks off the album would be sung with passion, as he wants his audience to leave The Sanctuary happy.

And even though ‘Living A Life Without The F’ received positive reviews from fans and critics alike, the musician revealed it was another album that he was most proud of.

“I’m still really happy with ‘Living A Life Without The F’ but I think ‘Dreamoirs’ is my favourite “I spent so much time on every aspect over a very long time and although it’s three years old I still listen to it for pleasure.

“For InMe, it’s defi nitely what we’re writing now but I still have a lot of love for ‘Daydream Anonymous’ from a decade ago.

“It was written after a painful breakup so there’s a lot of emotion all over it.”

He added: “You’ve got to put 110 per cent into each performance and keep trying to write better songs to create a stronger set.

“I try to inject spontaneous humour in between songs so every show is unique in that respect.”

Tickets for Dave’s concert at The Sanctuary cost £5.50.

No frills but eco-friendly Mitsubishi Mirage proves to be an efficient family runaround

Little ‘cutie’ was fun to drive I MAY have said this before, but I am not much of a fan of Eco cars.

However, last week, I was dropped off the little Mitsubishi Mirage and, to be honest, from then on I was forced to eat humble pie - well, one tiny corner of it anyway.

The little Mirage is a bit of a cutie really – no frills, of course, but who cares. This is a car for getting about in and, as I found out that week, it did a pretty good job of ferrying my family around with ease.

On the road:

The little Mirage is actually OK – remember it’s not a £30,000 car so don’t expect to fi nd a trick diff or a flappy-paddle gearbox. What you do get though is a car that will get you and your family from one place to another in decent style with minimal fuss and using less fuel than my lawnmower.

One thing I will say, however, is how Powered by a three-cylinder DOHC much I loved driving it – and that’s the 12 Valve MIVEC engine with 79bhp important bit here I suppose. and 0-62 time of about... well, let’s just Look at it this way, if a car makes say it will get to 60mph at some point, you feel happy when you are driving but as it’s what I would describe as an it, then the manufacturer has at least Eco car, I will scratch over the times. got one part of the design right.

Fuel efficiency is great at 55.4mpg urban.

The engine is also a very free revving three cylinder that feels quite nippy Inside the seats are very good for a car around town - that’s due to the cars costing just over £10,000. The dash is low weight but also thanks to those also made out of a decent material and

all the switches feel well made. Rear leg room is a little tight though, but then what small car does not have the same issue when it comes to rear space.

There are so many cars I could name that would need you to attend the IKEA design centre in Älmhult, Sweden, to learn the art of being flatpacked before you can sit in the back.

The Mirage Juro model specification also comes with many standard features such as ABS with EBD, active stability & traction control, TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), headlamps, Bi-Xenon HID, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth with music streaming, air conditioning, climate control and cruise control.

To sum up: I loved the little Mirage, it was fun to drive and costs very little to run. Your fi rst year’s car tax is also free and your insurance premiums will be peanuts for most people with a few years of no claims discount under their belt.

Collard closes gap on championship’s leader HOOK racer Rob Collard is still in with a chance of claiming his first British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) title following a storming drive at Silverstone.

The West Surrey Racing driver was a massive 32 points behind teammate and title leader Sam Tordoff going into the penultimate race meeting of the season at the weekend.

But after claiming his sixth podium of the campaign to back up two seventh- placed fi nishes, the 47-year-old is now well in with a shout, having nearly halved the gap to 17 points.

The previous round at Rockingham three weeks earlier had seen a similar string of results go unrewarded for Collard, as his third-placed fi nish in race three saw him make no ground on Tordoff.

ers’ way during a poor Saturday qualifying session for West Surrey Racing, that saw them come together to leave Collard down in 25th and his younger teammate in 17th.

While Tordoff made barely any ground in race one the following day, the experienced Collard produced some superb driving, to pass title rivals Gordon Shedden, Matt Neal, Mat Jackson, and Colin Turkington on his way up the field.

Racing on the softer tyres, Collard then repeated his seventhplaced fi nish in the next race, to make up more ground on 11thplaced Tordoff.

And he took it up another gear in the fi nal race of the day, roaring off the line to take the lead from Shedden, before eventually being passed by the 2015 BTCC

champion, as well as Jackson, to claim a well-earned, thirdplaced fi nish.

Collard said: “We came to Silverstone expecting a tough weekend, both because of the ballast situation and because the layout doesn’t allow us to maximise the strengths of the BMW. “But to have three top-10 fi nishes, end up with a podium, and effectively halve the gap to the championship lead is really so much more than I could have expected.

“I’ve deliberately changed my driving over the last year or two to focus on scoring points rather than taking silly risks and this is the result.”

He continued: “We now go to Brands Hatch in two weeks with Sam and I both in contention for the title, and from a team point of view, that’s brilliant.”

ICE HOCKEY: One of Basingstoke Bison’s summer recruits has left the club – less than two months after joining.

The Stampede confirmed last week that defenceman Lewis Turner would be stepping back from playing because of work commitments.

Turner arrived at Planet Ice from Bracknell Bees in July, and featured in the club’s preseason challenge matches, as well as both of their opening fixtures in the English Premier League.

BASINGSTOKE Town’s FA Cup hopes were ended by Hungerford Town in the second qualifying round on Saturday.

Stefan Brown’s penalty proved to be the only goal of an even affair at the Ark Cancer Charity Stadium to send the National League South side through.

The last two seasons had seen ‘Stoke embark on two runs in the FA Cup all the way to the fi rst round proper, before being knocked out by Telford United and Cambridge United.

And after comfortably dispatching Bemerton 4-0 in the previous round, there was hope that Terry Brown’s side could embark on another cup run.

But it was not to be, despite the Evo-Stik Southern Premier side coming closest to breaking the deadlock early on, as Charlie Kennedy saw his header cleared off the line on 15 minutes.

David Ray both saw efforts well saved by Hungerford keeper George Legg.

But it was the visitors who would get off the mark fi rst seven minutes before half-time, as Marcus Johnson-Schuster pushed over Nat Jarvis in the box for a penalty, which Brown duly converted.

Defender Robert Atkinson missed a great chance to level after the break, heading over from Richie Whittingham’s free kick.

Basingstoke goalkeeper Alex Tokarcyzk then blocked Harry Goodger’s effort just after the hour mark.

And Kennedy and George Hallahan then both fi red good chances wide of the mark to ensure it fi nished 1-0.

Basingstoke did move into the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday though, as they beat Farnborough 5-1.

HOCKEY: Odiham hockey star Alex Danson has joined several of her Team GB teammates in moving to play in the Dutch league.

The Olympic champion, who finished top scorer in Rio with five goals, had not played for Reading Hockey Club for two years, due to her commitments to the international team.

Fellow gold medallists Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh have left the club for Holland, with Danson moving to Investec Women’s League side Clifton Robinsons.

Away defeat FOOTBALL: Basingstoke Town Ladies were beaten 2-1 by Maidenhead in the Women’s Premier League on Wednesday night last week.

Lindsey Beverley scored her side’s goal at York Road in their second defeat of the season.

Rose’s records GOLF: North Hampshire golfer Justin Rose was one of 26 sports stars to have their medical files made public by hackers on Monday.

There is no suggestion that the Olympic gold medallist, or any of the others included in the hack by Russian hackers Fancy Bears, have done anything wrong.

The records mostly detail the use of therapeutic use exemptions, which allow for otherwise banned substances to be taken because of medical needs.

THOMPSON TRIPLE BAGS BISON A WIN BASINGSTOKE Bison claimed their first win of the season but were still left frustrated over the weekend.

A hat-trick from Shaun Thompson helped the Herd run over the Bracknell Bees in a massive 8-1 home victory on Saturday night.

But after breaking their duck, Doug Sheppard’s reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions then narrowly lost a match at Peterborough Phantoms the following night that they had dominated.

That result means that Basingstoke have now won just one of their opening four matches of the new season, after a terrible opening weekend that saw them lose to both the Telford Tigers and Hull Pirates.

Bison did at least show what they can do when at their best at the Basingstoke Arena against Bracknell though, as Thompson handed them the lead with a wrist shot from Kurt Reynolds’ pass, with 3:37 on the clock.

That was as good as things would get for the visitors though, as Bison’s Daniel Davies scrambled the puck over the line to give his side back the lead on 13:48.

It was all one way traffic from that point, and so it was no surprise when Thompson netted his second to make it 3-1 on 14:32 from Dan Lackey’s assist.

Some smart approach play from Tomas Karpov then set up Alan Lack to score Bison’s fourth 57 seconds into the second period, before Ciaran Long made it 5-1 from close range on 38:06.

And the Herd managed three more in the fi nal period, with Thompson registering his hattrick in between goals from Matt Towalski and Karpov to send the Bison faithful home happy.

After that deluge of goals, the

fans that made the trip to the Peterborough Arena witnessed a much tighter game the following night.

The Stampede found themselves 1-0 down after 5:53, with Ales Padelek and James Ferrara combining well to assist Marc Levers.

Bison got over that disappointment to equalise less than three minutes later though, as Lack provided the pass for Joe Baird to fi re home.

But despite dominating the second period with a massive 15 shots to Peterborough’s six, Basingstoke went behind on 29:33, with Ben Russell this time the man to beat Tomas Hiadlovsky.

And while they threw the kitchen sink at their opponents for the rest of the match, the Herd couldn’t fi nd a way past Janis Auzins for a second time after that, as they lost 2-1.

Basingstoke will get the chance to get revenge this Saturday though, when they will play the Phantoms at home at Planet Ice.
