BIG INCREASE IN COUNTY’S CRIME Hampshire’s figures Owen show percentage rise is highest in UK overcomes NEW figures have revealed that Hampshire’s reported crime rate has risen by over 18 per cent in the last year – a bigger increase than anywhere else in the country. A total of 121,250 crimes were recorded by police across the county from the start of July 2014 up to the end of June this year compared to 102,412 in the previous 12 months, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Reporting of sexual offences has nearly doubled, with officers dealing with 3,858 cases in comparison to 1,963, while violent crimes have jumped from 21,981 to 33,987. Elsewhere, the overall crime rate for England and Wales has doubled to more than 11.6million offences, with the sharp rise partly due to the inclusion of cybercrime offences like the distribution of sexually explicit images, otherwise known as revenge porn’. • Continues on page 2
