Digging in to develop sport in the city at £5m complex By George Welch A £5million sports complex could pave the way for the expansion of the Cowley Mini plant, according to the leader of the city council. Spades struck the ground for the fi rst time as 39 acres of farmland near the plant began its transformation into new sporting facilities. And BMW could use the space freed up by the development for expansion to allow manufacturing of the electric Mini, which was formally unveiled at a car show in Frankfurt earlier this month, in Oxford. Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said that, although nothing has been confi rmed yet, the German carmaker is expected to make an official announcement on the land off Romans Way ‘fairly soon’. Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the £4.9m sports park off Oxford Road on Friday, the Labour councillor said: “We’re meeting BMW in two weeks’ time to talk about it [the expansion] and we expect confi rmation not long after that. “This meeting is an informal discussion about where they are going and they will be announcing stuff fairly soon after that.” It was confi rmed by BMW in July that the Cowley plant would be the main “production location” for the new battery-electric three-door hatch

This means it requires more land and identified a plot next to the factory, which is currently used as a training base by Oxford United, for the expansion. Cllr Price added: “They will need quite a lot of extra space for the storage aspect as well as the assembly line. “They are carrying on with the old Mini as well – it won’t be a complete phase out of the old Mini so they will need both facilities. “We expect that to be operational by 2020 so I think they will be cutting
