lings, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty back in December to trying to kill his ex-partner.

It happened on August 6 last year at a house in Robins Hill, Inkpen, when Buckland stabbed the victim once in the neck and three times in the back.

There were also injuries caused to her hands, which continue to require treatment.

Police were called and the woman was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, while Buckland was arrested and then charged with attempted murder the following day.

Buckland’s 16 years and six months jail term will also be followed by five years on extended license.

‘Good progress’ for children’s services WEST Berkshire Council is making “good progress” in its efforts to improve children’s services in the district, a Government minister has said.

Officials from the Department for Education visited the council last month, one year after education watchdog Ofsted judged that the children and family service was ‘inadequate’.

They came to review the progress that had been made during that time, after Ofsted found “widespread or serious failures” in the council’s children’s services following an inspection last March.

But in a letter to the council following the review, the Min-

By Adam Flinn ister of State for Children and Families, Edward Timpson, said that “good progress had been made” and “senior managers have responded positively to the challenge”.

Rachael Wardell, the council’s director of communities, said: “I’m pleased that the good progress we have made has been acknowledged.

“We fully accepted Ofsted’s recommendations, and over the past year we have implemented them all, working really hard to improve the support we provide to the children and families who need our help.

“This will spur us on as we strive to provide an excellent service to children, young people and their families, and to achieve an improved rating at our next inspection.”

Almost 100 actions have been carried out across five key areas over the past year: leadership, quality of practice, workforce, services to children in need of help or protection, and services to children looked after and care leavers.

In his letter, Mr Timpson urged the council to maintain its work, to keep improving the quality of its casework, and build upon the gains already made.

Ms Wardell added: “We’ve

made some good progress but we know we need to do more for our services to be ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

“We have more we want to do, for example further training for managers and improvements to how we support young people about to leave care.

“In order to help us improve further, we have commissioned the Local Government Association to conduct a peer review of the service.”

She continued: “This is likely to take place during the summer and we look forward to working with them to help measure our improvement and any further areas for development.”

Foster carers needed for homeless hounds DOGS Trust Newbury is asking West Berkshire residents to take in a homeless hound as part of their fostering initiative.

The Home from Home scheme gives dogs who might not be coping well in kennels the opportunity to experience a home environment again and prepare for family life.

One of the dogs that has benefitted is 10-year-old Rocco, a Terrier who arrived at Dogs Trust Newbury as a stray earlier this year.

Foster carer Jenny Collom said: “Although we are helping Rocco for life in a new home, he has given us so much in return – it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience.

“I would highly recommend foster caring to anyone who loves dogs, but perhaps isn’t able to commit to a four-legged friend long-term.”

Juliet Glanville, Home from Home coordinator at Dogs Trust Newbury, added: “Whilst most

dogs are raring to go when it comes to fi nding a new home, some dogs need a little more special attention and that’s where fostering comes in.

“Our foster carers offer additional support for dogs who

might have health concerns, aren’t really enjoying kennel life or just need a little extra one-toone care.

“They provide a loving, happy space which gives our dogs the chance to enjoy their home

comforts and become better prepared for fi nding their forever homes when the time comes.”

News Bites Head of the year NEWBURY: A Newbury headteacher is on the shortlist for ‘Headteacher of the year’ in the Times Educational Supplement (TES) awards.

Derek Peaple, headteacher at Park House School in Andover Road, is one of eight nationwide who have been nominated.

The TES awards are in their seventh year, with 17 awards including ‘Overall school of the year’ set to be handed out.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London, on June 24.

Speed campaign WEST BERKS: Thames Valley Police is taking part in a campaign this week to crack down on drivers committing speeding offences.

The Europe-wide campaign sees officers conducting random checks on speeding, with drivers caught being issued with anything from a fixed penalty notice to a summons to attend court.

It began on Monday, with the campaign set to end on Sunday.

Sgt Chris Appleby, from the Joint Roads Policing Unit, said: “Excessive or inappropriate speed has a devastating impact on the safety of road users.”

Great Apples THATCHAM: A new health scheme aiming to reduce bedsores and other common issues at a Thatcham care home has been launched by Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The ‘Great Apples’ scheme is trying to ensure residents and staff are aware of the problems that lead to pressure ulcers, known as bedsores, and other common health issues.

It is being run at the Walnut Close care home, with plans to expand it to other homes in the future.

Wharf toilets back in action after reprieve NEWBURY’S public toilets at The Wharf have been given a reprieve, after they were reopened on a temporary basis last week.

But Newbury Town Council has stepped in to reopen the toilets at The Wharf for “a few months”, while discussions take place with the district council for its long-term future.

They reopened on Friday, and will be open from 9am to 5pm.

Dave Goff, leader of the town council, said: “We put £15,000 aside in the budget for this year to maintain the toilets at The Wharf.

“We’ve now been able to reach an agreement to open the toilets

on a temporary basis, so during this period we hope to come up with a proper, formal solution to keep them open long-term.

“It’s about how we can make it a viable service so the town council can support it fi nancially going forward with opening hours, cleaning contracts, all

those sorts of things that we’ve been asked to take on.”

Concerns had been raised in recent weeks of coach drivers not choosing to stop at Newbury because of the closure.

Cllr Goff added: “If there’s no toilets in The Wharf for bus passengers and coach passengers to use, they’ll drop off at Chieveley or go elsewhere.

“We want to make sure people do come to Newbury on the coaches, we want to maintain that and keep that going.”

Martha Vickers, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the town council, said: “It’s good news, we need the toilets in that position, and I’m really pleased the town council has worked hard to get them reopened.

“Good news, but why did they have to close them in the fi rst place? Why put this stress on Newbury’s residents and visitors?

“I know since it closed, I’ve seen people trying to get in, wondering what’s happening, and already I believe coaches are questioning what they’re going to do and where they’re going to go.”

Health books WEST BERKS: West Berkshire Council’s libraries service has set up a new initiative that supports young people with a mental health issue through books.

The Reading Well scheme recommends books to 13- to 18-year-olds that help them deal with a range of issues including depression, eating disorders and bullying.

Thirty-five books are on the list, all of which are available at Newbury Library and can be reserved at the district’s other libraries.

Annual meeting THATCHAM: The annual Thatcham Town Council meeting takes place on Monday at 6.30pm in the Parish Hall, Chapel Street, for residents to discuss any issues relating to the town.

Buckland jailed for attempted murder of ex-partner VË Á ËwÁ Íˬ?~j Investigating officer Det Con Wayne Harvey from Newbury police station said: “The guilty plea of Buckland is a fantastic result for the victim, who has suffered enough already from this horrific crime.

“I would like to thank the victim for her courage throughout the investigation and the trial – she is a genuine inspiration to all officers involved in this case.

“This sentence also reflects the hard work put into the investigation by the Domestic Abuse Investiga-

tion Unit at Newbury, who worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to present a case which clearly reflects the gravity of what occurred that day.

“This case demonstrates the seriousness and impact that domestic abuse can have on the victims.”

Following the sentencing, Thames Valley Police urged anyone affected by domestic abuse to call 999 in an emergency situation.

In a non-emergency, victims can call 101 and asked for the local domestic abuse unit.

Det Con Harvey added: “I would like other women and men who are suffering from domestic abuse to know that there is help out there and that they can report what they are going through to specialist officers at Thames Valley Police.

“There is help and support available and, wherever possible, we will prosecute.”

Decision due on homes proposal for village pub CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn a village pub into housing were recommended for refusal ahead of a council meeting last night.

West Berkshire Council’s western area planning committee was last night set to make a decision on the application to change the White Hart Inn in Hamstead Marshall into homes as the Observer went to print.

The plans would see the White Hart Inn turned into four dwellings, after the current owner, Stella Coulthurst, closed the pub

More than 40 letters of objection had been received ahead of the meeting, with fears about the impact of the loss of the pub to the community.

And ahead of the meeting the council’s principal planning officer Michael Butler recommended the application should be turned down.

He wrote: “In this application the planning issues are particu-

larly fi nely balanced.

“On the one hand the present owner has invested considerable time and money in attempting to make the public house a viable and successful proposition.

“It is apposite to note that no council as planning authority can force a pub to open and trade, however beneficial this might be to the local community.

“But given that the independent assessor has recognised the future potential for the public house to operate at a trading profit, and has cast some doubt on the effectiveness of the applicants marketing campaign, the application is duly recommended for refusal.”

Campaign group Save The White Hart Inn has also been set up, and is looking to see whether the community could take over its running.

Ms Coulthurst has previously said she had lost more than £500,000 on the pub since she took it over several years ago, and that no-one had stepped up to take over the lease after six months on the market.

‘Emotional day’ as work starts on new bridge at Ufton Nervet

Last August West Berkshire Council granted Network Rail planning permission to construct a bridge over the train line near the village.

It comes after seven people were killed and 71 injured as a result of a collision on the crossing in 2004, when a driver parked his car on the track and was hit by a train.

Monday’s ceremony was attended by members of the Ufton Nervet support group

that was set up after the collision, as well as Network Rail’s managing director for the western route, Mark Langman.

Mr Langman said: “This is an emotional day for everyone affected by the 2004 collision and marks an important step towards our goal of improving the safety of passengers and the public at Ufton Nervet.

“By building this bridge and replacing the level crossing, we can significantly reduce the risk of a tragedy like this happening again, helping to ensure that everyone gets home safe, every day.”

News Bites Blood pressure NEWBURY: The Rotary Club of Newbury has teamed up with the Stroke Association to host free blood pressure tests in the town this Saturday.

The checks will be carried out at Newbury Town Hall between 10am and 1.30pm, with advice also being given on how to reduce the risk of a stroke.

Newbury benefits from charity’s defibrillators A GROUP of Newbury residents helped a West Berkshire charity mark the installation of its 21st defibrillator in the last three years with a celebration earlier this month.

Heartstart Thatcham installed its latest life-saving device in Willow Close, having previously trained a number of residents and their friends and family last year.

a new defibrillator, and with help from Sovereign Housing Association it was set up outside for the whole community to access.

Newbury’s mayor Howard Bairstow unveiled the device, which was placed in memory of resident George Atkins.

A celebration of cake and refreshments was held afterwards, with the Heartstart Thatcham team giving a demonstration on how to perform CPR.

Tony Robinson, chairman of the Willow Close Residents Committee, said: “I would like to thank Heartstart Thatcham and Sovereign Housing for choosing our location for the latest defibrillator.

“It’s a busy public place, with not only the residents, but school runs and many passers by.”

Defibrillators are used on a person that is in cardiac arrest, different to a heart attack as the heart is no longer pumping blood around the body.

If used quickly, the defibrillator can dramatically increase the chances of survival.

Heartstart Thatcham was set up in May 2013 as part of the Heartstart scheme run by the British Heart Foundation.

As well as installing defibrillators across the district, its volunteers also teach people simple life-saving skills.

Heartstart Thatcham coordinator Nick Young said: “It has been a pleasure working with such an enthusiastic group and we are delighted this was our 21st unit.

“The team already have another 10 units to place and have no plans to slow down.”

Youngsters urged to get snapping

THATCHAM: The Berkshire Schools’ Football Association is celebrating its golden jubilee later this month with three inter-school county cup finals at Thatcham Town Football Club.

Youngsters from across the county will take to the pitch, 50 years after the association was first founded.

It is hoped that many past and present county officials and players will attend for the celebrations.

The competitions start next Thursday at 4pm.

Man’s shop ban • The winners of last year’s competition THIS year’s Thatcham photography competition for students living or studying in the town has been launched, with the theme ‘my school’.

Thatcham Photographic Club, in collaboration with the Newbury & Thatcham Observer and Thatcham Town Council, is running the competition as part of the 2016 Thatcham Festival.

Students up to 17 years old are tasked with capturing an image showing what their school means to them.

Paul Roberts, chairman of Thatcham Photographic Club,

said: “Following a successful fi rst year in 2015, we are delighted to be able to run the competition again in 2016.

“We look forward to having an even more difficult judging task in the 2016 competition.”

Students can submit up to three pictures before the deadline of September 23 for a chance to win up to £50 in vouchers.

The winning pictures will also be featured in the Newbury & Thatcham Observer.

NEWBURY: Magistrates in Newbury have banned a 35-year-old man from entering a number of shops in the town.

Stewart Perry was handed a Criminal Behaviour Order last Thursday following an application from Thames Valley Police, which will be in place for two years.

It bans Perry from Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Boots and Tesco Express in the town, and from remaining in any retail establishment in West Berkshire if asked to leave.

PC Peter Duffy said: “This order is to target Mr Perry’s persistent offending towards the named shops, and will provide some respite to these stores as it lasts until 2018.”

Candidates lining up for commissioner role AS election day approaches, the names of candidates standing for the post of Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) in the Thames Valley have been announced, ahead of the polls opening on Thursday, May 5.

The current PCC Anthony Stansfeld (Conservative), who has held the position since it was created in November 2012, is standing for re-election for another term, but faces competition from across the region.

Mr Stansfeld, who is also the West Berkshire councillor for Kintbury, said: “In my period of being PCC, Thames Valley Police has gone from being one of the worst performing to the best three or four. I think we’ve got very good staff and police officers.

“I’m probably much better qualified than anybody else.”

Mr Stansfeld said his priorities were protecting vulnerable people, reducing burglaries and reducing rural crimes.

After taking up the post, Mr Stansfeld came under fi re in the national press for changing the address of his main office to a local police station, which allowed him to claim expenses for the journey from his home to Thames Valley Police (TVP) headquarters in Kidlington.

who lives in Chipping Norton, has served as a district councillor since May 2014 and has worked for the police, the NHS and the court service.

Mrs Carter said her priorities were to fight against cuts to the police budget, to respond to

crimes on the rise and to increase reporting of domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation.

The Home Office has cut police funding by about four per cent a year between 2010 and 2015, with 17,000 frontline jobs being axed during that period, according to the police federation.

Mr Howson, who lives in Oxford, served as a magistrate for 23 years, and has been a Reading East and Banbury parliamentary candidate in the past.

His priorities include protecting policing from Government cuts, supporting local policing and the need to tackle rural crimes such as hare coursing.

UKIP candidate Lea Trainer has served in the Royal Navy and now teaches vulnerable children and young adults.

He said: “I will stand up as the straight-talking voice of the people in Thames Valley.

“I am passionate about restoring trust between the community and the police force.”

The deadline for members of the public registering to vote in the PCC election, as well as those for local councils, is Monday, April 18.

PCC role was established to give public accountability THE role of police and crime commissioner (PCC) was created by the Coalition Government in November 2012.

It was aimed at increasing the accountability of policing in the eyes of the electorate by giving members of the public a direct vote.

The responsibilities of the police commissioner are to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of their police force by allocating money.

Chief constables are also appointed, suspended and dismissed by them.

The police commissioners must draw up a police and crime plan, which sets out their priorities for policing and how they aim to measure performance.

In 2014, the Labour Party planned to scrap the post if they had won last year’s General Election following the poor voter turnout in the fi rst PCC elections.

Only 15 per cent of those registered to vote did so in November 2012.

The low turnout was put down to a lack of information on the election and the candidates, as well as the timing of the vote.

There are 41 PCCs across England and Wales.

Top learners WEST BERKS: Nominations are being accepted for this year’s West Berkshire Learner Achievement Awards.

The awards celebrate adult learning, with categories including outstanding achievement, best tutor or trainer, and determination.

News Bites Car damaged NEWBURY: A 24-year-old man from Newbury has been arrested after a car was damaged in the town last weekend.

At around 2.50am on April 10, a black Renault Megane was damaged in Redfield Court.

The man was arrested later that day in connection with the incident, and has been bailed until May 6.

‘Super surgery’ open after a two year wait THE merger of two Newbury surgeries to create a ‘super surgery’ has been completed, almost two years after the plans were first put forward.

St Mary’s Road Surgery and Northcroft Surgery have combined to form the Strawberry Hill Medical Centre, which opened on Monday.

A planning application for the new centre, in Old Bath Road, was fi rst submitted in July 2014, before being approved by West Berkshire Council in October that year.

Both Northcroft and St Mary’s Road surgeries closed on Friday evening, with the new centre opening at 8am on Monday morning.

A statement from Northcroft Surgery said: “The GP partners from both practices feel that the best way to continue to offer our patients the same excellent care is to come together to pool our collective clinical skills and resources.

“The two practices have always worked closely together as a ‘buddy’ practice and a merger between the two gives us the opportunity to develop and expand the services we can offer.

“We are confident that the merger is a positive move for patients and staff and we are looking forward to working together.”

Around 20,000 residents will be registered at the new centre.

Patients who were registered at one of the original surgeries will remain with their current GP. A statement from St Mary’s Road Surgery said: “The two practices are both committed to providing excellent patient care and wish to provide sustainable, future proof services fit for the 21st century.

“We are very much looking forward to working together in good quality new premises and believe this will give us the opportunity to explore and expand services in the future.”

The new phone number for the centre is 01635 917917, although the numbers for both original surgeries will initially redirect.

It will be open from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday.

A new website has also been launched: strawberryhillmedicalcentre.co.uk.

Businesses asked EU thoughts NEWBURY MP Richard Benyon is asking West Berkshire business owners to take part in a survey on the forthcoming European Union (EU) referendum.

Mr Benyon, who is in favour of remaining in the EU, has set the survey up on his website, with eight questions asking for thoughts on the ‘in or out’ debate.

The referendum is due to take place on June 23.

Mr Benyon said: “As MP for this busy and thriving area, I know there are many businesses in my constituency which make a huge contribution to the local and national economy.

THIS year would have marked Roy Orbison’s 80th birthday.

To mark the occasion, a brand new tribute show will be at the Corn Exchange in Newbury on Saturday, April 30 to celebrate the life and career of the great musician.

‘Barry Steele and Friends: The Orbison Story’ will see Barry, one of the world’s leading Roy Orbison tribute acts, take to the Market Place stage to perform iconic tracks including ‘Crying’, ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’, ‘Only the Lonely’ and many more.

And Barry is hoping the audience will come to together as they celebrate the life of The Big O. “Orbison’s songs not only have wonderful melodies and tunes, but the lyrics are some of the most sublime ever written,” Barry said.

“Not only does the music take you back in time, but they can make you happy, sad and emotive all at the same time.

“Orbison is known as a balladeer, but he also recorded and performed rocky and contemporary songs.

His songs are quite simply timeless.”

Orbison became one of the most popular artists of his generation during his career, which saw him release 24 studio albums, four posthumously after his death in 1987, aged 52.

By James Richings His music caught the ears of millions of music enthusiasts around the world, so it was no surprise he was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a year after he died, whilst also winning a Grammy.

However, serious health issues occurred later on in the musician’s life, and on December 6, 1988, Roy died of a major heart attack.

And with Barry regarded as one best Roy Orbison tribute acts in the world, he believes that hard work was the key to his success.

“Work is the key,” he said.

“Nothing is easy and it is sheer hard work from both myself and my wife.

“We have developed our show from scratch, and it is not another show by another name. It really has been our baby from the initial idea through to where we are now.”

He added: “It’s safe to say that Roy Orbison and his music has stood the test of time, remaining as popular today as it was back in the day.”

Barry also revealed that his favourite Orbison tracks are ‘Leah’ and ‘California Blue’.

The show will start at 7.45pm, and tickets cost £20.50.

It is suitable for over 12s.

Kathryn Williams LIVE MUSIC: Singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams will be performing at the Arlington Arts Centre in Newbury tomorrow night, Friday, April 22.

The 42-year-old will perform tracks off her latest album ‘Hypoxia’, her 10th album which was released last year.

The gig starts at 8pm.

Maths genius film MOVIE: The Corn Exchange Cinema will be screening last year’s biographical flick ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’, from Friday, April 29 to Thursday, May 5.

Starring Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons and Toby Jones, the drama movie is based on the 1991 book written by Robert Kanigel about mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Tickets cost from £5 to £8.50.

Riff Raff are back LIVE MUSIC: Newbury-based covers band Riff Raff will be performing at The Cross Keys in Newbury.

The three friends arrive at the London Road pub to perform a number of chart toppers from the 1960s to the present day.

The trio regularly perform across West Berkshire.

Jazzing it up with John JAZZ musician John Etheridge will show why he is regarded as one of the finest jazz musicians in the country when he arrives at the Corn Exchange on Thursday, May 12.

The 68-year-old comes to West Berkshire as part of the Newbury Spring Festival, which is celebrating it 38th anniversary this year.

The musician will perform with his band Sweet Chorus, made up of Christian Garrick on the violin, Dave Kelbie on the guitar and Andy Crowdy on the bass.

“Our little band is grounded in the music of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, but it spins off in lots of different directions,” John told the Observer.

“I played with Grappelli for a number of years and he was always interested in hearing new things and encouraged me to be individual.

“He was very keen that we did not try to imitate Django, and was a really inspirational musician so we dedicate our concert to him.

“Violinist Chris Garrick and I have been working together for years and we have a great understanding.

“Our bass player Andy Crowdy is also wonderfully creative, whilst Dave Kelbie is a rock solid rhythm guitar.”

By James Richings John comes with praise from ex-Police lead singer Sting, with the musician once saying: “I never wanted to be a star, just a highly respected musician like John Etheridge.”

And with a career spanning over 40 years, John’s appearance in Newbury is just one of many famous names in the jazz and classical world who will be appearing at this year’s Spring Festival.

Conductor Rainer Hersch, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Benjamin Grosvenor and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra are among the acts attending this year’s festival.

John added: “The appreciation of the audience is absolutely vital.

“In the age of TV, the internet and so on, audiences often forget they are seeing real beings in front of them and that if they want a great performance, they need to interact and encouragement.

“If I am in the audience, I always make a big noise, particularly after the fi rst number as this really helps the musicians to settle and feel they are with friends.”

Tickets cost from £11 to £21, and the show starts at 7.30pm.

Vin Garbutt LIVE MUSIC: Singer-songwriter Vin Garbutt will be at the New Greenham Arts Auditorium tomorrow night, Friday, April 22.

The 68-year-old from Middlesbrough, who is known for his protest songs, arrives in West Berkshire to perform a number of tracks from the years gone by.

The show starts at 8pm.

Comedy night COMEDY: The Corn Exchange’s monthly comedian club will be returning on Friday, April 29.

Jongleurs will allow a number of local comedians to show off their talent at the Market Street venue alongside some established names.

Volvo impresses on all counts THERE are three reasons why you would buy a Volvo.

Firstly, it is one of the safest cars around; secondly, they are designed to do everything with minimal fuss; and thirdly, because you have now grown up and the thought of doing 600mph in a hot hatch has had its day.

So, how did the XC70 fair when I took ‘her’ out for a spin to Cardiff?

I don’t know much about Cardiff – I know they have lots of clubs and bars – but did you know that the oldest record store in the world can be found in Cardiff?

Spillers Records was opened in 1894 and though it’s not in its original location, you can fi nd it at The Morgan Arcade.

ENGINE: The XC70 I had was fitted with a five cylinder 2,400cc diesel engine.

0-62mph is dealt with in around 9.5sec (auto) and with a top speed of 124mph.

The big plus point of the engine is its torque levels. Add in a combined fuel consumption of 48.7mpg, which for a large estate is frankly amazing.

Thatcham end season with Brimscombe win Team Kennet’s seniors miss out on second place TEAM Kennet Athletics Club’s seniors almost pulled off a good result but had to settle for fourth in the Southern Athletics League Division 3SW in Swindon on Saturday.

The West Berkshire club scored 114 points, but were within striking distance of hosts Swindon in second, who fi nished the day on 148.

But there were some strong results from Team Kennet, including Alex Hanson breaking the club’s under-20 5,000m record with a time of 15:44.8 earning him the win.

Callum O’Neill took victory in the B string of the 5,000m with his time of 16:05.5, while another win came through Luke Angell in the javelin with a throw of 54.92m.

Tornadoes gain big sister in Reading THATCHAM Tornadoes FC have become a sister club to Reading FC Women with the aim of growing girls football within West Berkshire.

The Tornadoes, who run three girls teams at under eights, 10s and 13s level, hope to benefit from the players and coaches at Reading.

As part of the agreement they will receive tickets to Reading Women’s home matches, and be able to attend coaching sessions and training camps.

RUGBY: Thatcham RFC look to be safe from relegation, despite losing 36-23 to Beaconsfield on Saturday.

The result leaves Thatcham five points above relegation threatened Drifters, with only a big bonus point win against Marlow in their last game next weekend enough to save them from the drop.

NEWBURY Blues RFC’s promotion hopes were finally extinguished on Saturday, despite picking up a 12th league win a row against Swindon.

They beat the Wiltshire side 18-12, but were unable to secure the all-important bonus point that would have kept their playoff challenge alive until the fi nal game of the season this weekend.

The Blues had got off to a good start against Swindon with Dan Thorne grabbing an early try on six minutes, although he saw his conversion go just wide.

Two minutes later try number two came along as Matt Horne slipped a pass to Steve Denner to touch down, with Thorne this time scoring the extras.

But no more tries would come Newbury’s way, with only a Thorne penalty just shy of the

half hour mark adding to their tally in the fi rst half.

After the break Swindon fi nally got off the mark with a try wide out on the right, before Thorne retalliated with a second penalty to put the Blues 13 points ahead.

On 60 minutes Swindon reduced the deficit with a converted try, putting them within six points with 20 minutes left to play.

However neither side managed to add to their totals, and while the Blues will be pleased to keep their winning run going, they will rue the missed chance to secure the vital bonus point after such a strong start to the match.

It leaves the Blues third in the South West 1 East standings with 89 points, having slipped six points behind second-placed Salisbury with one game left.
