3G pitch a boost for sport and the wider community Facilities could create ‘social hub’
By Eva Astreinidou
PLANS for a new 3G football pitch would not only make playing easier but could add to the local economy through extended use. The new pitch would add to the existing facilities at Faringdon Leisure Centre under proposals from Vale of the White Horse District Council. Councillor Charlotte Dickson, cabinet member for leisure at the Vale said: “Currently residents in the Faringdon area have to travel more than 10 miles if they wish to use an artificial pitch so a new 3G facility in the town would benefit many people across the local community. “This investment clearly highlights our commitment to ensuring that leisure facilities are available for all our residents and provides a real boost to what we already have on offer at Faringdon Leisure Centre.” The centre boasts an airconditioned gym, a 25m indoor swimming pool with sauna and steam room facilities, six court sports halls, and squash courts. Plans for the artificial turf behind the Fernham Road centre were drawn up by sport planning specialists Martin Arnold.
In their application, the planners said the new facilities would help generate more profits for the local economy and the public. They said: “The economic opportunities of increasing facilities available at the leisure centre would mean that GLL, the operators, would be able to rent the facilities out to the wider community for use. “The additional facilities may also attract users from further reach to use the facilities, especially for inter-school or similar football matches.” They added: “The facilities can be rented out to a wider audience for further use, [and] create a ‘social hub’ for the community, with potential for other schools within a further reach to make use of the improved facilities available.” The proposal also includes the provision of extra parking spaces to accommodate the expected increase in visitors. The planners added that there are constraints to vehicular access – at present, cars would have to drive through the car parking facilities as there is no direct access to the site from a main road.
