Man charged after woman raped at knifepoint in park

Police still appealing for information into attack

A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Eastbourne has been charged after a woman was raped by a knife-wielding, balaclavawearing man at a park near Oxford Brookes University. Mark Pearton, of Cavendish Place in Eastbourne, Sussex, was arrested and charged on Friday. He has been charged with one count of rape, one count of assault by penetration and one count of possession of a knife in a public place. Pearton appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and has been remanded to appear at Oxford Crown Court on February 10. Thames Valley Police (TVP) launched a fresh appeal for information on Thursday last week, following the attack on Tuesday, January 10. Police did arrest a 38-year-old man

but he was released on the evening of Wednesday, January 11. Detectives from Oxfordshire Force CID are continuing to investigate the circumstances and anyone with any information about the incident should contact police. Senior investigating officer, Det Insp Jim Holmes, re-appealed for information on Thursday, saying: “Our fi rst appeal is to anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in the vicinity of Raleigh Park and Harcourt Hill on Tuesday between about 7.30pm and 8.30pm. “Perhaps you saw a man acting suspiciously or a man talking to a woman, if you did then please come forward. “The second part of our appeal is to anyone who saw any vehicles being driven erratically along the northbound carriageway of the A34, particularly near Botley or Wytham, after about 8.30pm on Tuesday. “Or perhaps you saw items being thrown from a vehicle on the A34 during that evening.
