A WOMAN who found a dead puppy at a site recently vacated by travellers admitted she was ‘overcome by emotion’ and ‘shocked’ by her discovery. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, was responding to a help request by the Doglost group following a report of an abandoned dog. She found the dead lurcher as she searched through the litter-strewn Bicester Park and Ride on Saturday, describing the discovery as “one of the most horrible experiences I’ve ever had”.

New fencing will be put up and damaged bollards will also be repaired now travellers, who occupied the car park for nearly a week, have left the site. Lisa West, area coordinator for Doglost Oxfordshire, confi rmed the dead lurcher puppy, which has since been named Twinkle, was found at the car park. carried to a vet were also discovered. The whippet, found in a box with straw, has hot and had red skin. The spaniel will need time to recover after being ‘upsettingly’ despondent. Miss West, who lives in Abingdon and has two dogs of her own, told the Guardian: “I despair at this ongoing situation. Volunteers have been going to check each site as the travelling community vacate each one. “It has been most upsetting, a time that I shall never forget. The image of Twinkle will remain in my heart forever. I cannot thank the members of the public enough for their help and support [in donations and locating

dogs], and I will be eternally grateful to them.” The woman who found Twinkle said the poor pup was located in the mud next to a big pile of rubbish. She said: “I was overcome by emotion. I have three dogs myself and I just couldn’t and still can’t comprehend how anyone can throw a dog out literally with the rubbish. “It looked like she had just been tossed there.” A JustGiving page set up to raise money towards a cremation for Twinkle has raised more than £300. Any further donations will go towards the care of the surviving dogs.

Donations can be made at tinyurl. com/ycu9asxa Friends, Families and Travellers, a charity representing the travelling community, said there was no evidence that travellers, who moved off the site early on Saturday, left the dogs. When the whippet and spaniel are fit and well enough they will be rehomed or given a safe rescue placement. None of the three dogs were micro chipped. The previously suspended Stagecoach S5 service serving the park and ride has now resumed usual service.
