Man hurt after a van hits him on the hard shoulder of M3, near Black Dam roundabout A MAN was left with lifechanging injuries after a road rage incident by Black Dam roundabout, days before a public exhibition on how to make the junction safer and less jammed will take place. The man, in his 60s, was rushed to hospital after being hit by a van on the M3’s hard shoulder off Black Dam roundabout on Tuesday. The crash came before a consultation launches on Tuesday in Festival Place on £11.2million works to ease traffic on the major pinch point. Basingstoke councillor Tony Jones, of Buckskin - who uses the roundabout everyday - said: “Something obviously needs to be done and fast. “People use that roundabout in a rush - you can see why there are accidents. Work should have taken place on the roundabout long ago.” The man is said to be in a stable condition with life-changing leg injuries at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. They are part of the government’s £317million pinch point programme and will see it turned into a “hamburger” style roundabout – with a four-lane carriageway built through it. Basingstoke MP Maria Miller said: “The Basingstoke Black Dam rounndabout has suffered from significant increases in traffic congestion in recent years because of the high levels of house building throughout North Hampshire.

the motorway northbound when police say they pulled onto the hard shoulder during a road rage incident at about 9.45am. Hampshire Constabulary spokesman Meline Turkington said: “They both had words and as the VW driver was getting back into the car the driver of the van parked behind drove off, and the van’s empty trailer clipped him, causing serious leg injuries.” She added that the van driver might not have been aware that he hit the man before he carried on driving northbound on the M3. Police launched an appeal to track down the van driver, described as being white, 40 to 50 years old, 5ft 6, with a thick neck, and cropped brown hair that is balding at the front. He was wearing a grey top and was driving a white flatbed with a high cab and grey trailer. Basingstoke councillor Sven Godeson, of Basing, said: “When • Continued on page 2
