Cyclist ‘lost balance’ and fell before being run over by bus By Eva Astreinidou A CYCLIST lost her balance and fell sideways off her bike on to the road before being run over by a bus, an inquest heard. Claudia Comberti, 31, was cycling on Botley Road on Tuesday last week, when she stopped at traffic lights at the junction with McDonald’s. When the lights changed, she went to cycle away but lost her balance as her right leg slipped on the pedal of her bike. She fell sideways to her right just as a 4B bus was coming up behind her. She was run over by the bus and was pronounced dead at the scene. At the opening into her death at Oxford Coroner’s Court yesterday, Coroner Darren Salter said the postmortem examination determined the cause of death as head trauma. Mr Salter described the inquest as a ‘very sad case’. Ms Comberti of Cumberland Road, Oxford was a PhD geography student at Oxford University. The date for the full inquest has been provisionally set for October 26. On Friday, huge crowds gathered in Broad Street as cyclists joined a mass bike ride in her memory. Two days before, around 100 cyclists took part in a ride – one holding a symbolic empty white ‘ghost’ bike. A tribute released by Oxford cycling group Broken Spoke described her as a ‘much loved’ and ‘genuine’ woman.

brightened every time with her smile and exuberance. “We decided to create a ghost bike – a bike that is painted white to mark
the place where someone lost their life whilst cycling. To act as a memorial, a symbol of their absence, and to make visible the dangers that we face.
“We came to express our love, our desperation and our sorrow, to support each other – and to create a safe space that wasn’t available for her.”
