Cash splashed to refurb pool

More voices against new quarry plans

Vale of White Horse District Council leader Matthew Barber and Cllr Charlotte Dickson with the pool as it currently is ahead of the £1.3million revamp

By George Welch WORK to refurbish the much-loved outdoor pool in Abingdon’s Abbey Meadow is set to begin later this month. The £1.3million project will take seven months to complete and should be ready to welcome swimmers and inflatables in time for next summer. The revamp includes combining the small pool with the larger pool to create a beach-style walk in area, allowing easy access to the water for young children or those with dis-

abilities, and a deep-water area for experienced swimmers. Leader of Vale of White Horse District Council, Matthew Barber, said: “I’m sure people will be very pleased to see work start at the pool later this month. “This investment, along with the other improvements to the wider Abbey Meadow area, will help make this a must-visit venue.” A rubber-crumbed surface will be installed to create a safe area around the pool and in front of the changing rooms.

The changing rooms will also be refurbished and equipment used to run the pool will be replaced with a new energy efficient system. Work is expected to take around 28 weeks to complete and is part of a major project to make Abbey Meadow more attractive to visitors to the area. The new play park opened earlier this year while new public toilets, changing facilities and an accessible path will be installed over the coming months. The Vale announced last summer that Abingdon’s outdoor pool was to

be rebuilt after more than 700 people signed a petition calling for it to be refurbished. Cllr Charlotte Dickson, cabinet member for leisure, said: “The outdoor pool in Abingdon really is a much-loved local facility. “The current pool area has seen better days. “This refurbishment work will ensure that the pool can remain in operation for future generations and that it provides a much better environment for residents and visitors to the area.”

EXPERTS have thrown another spanner in the works over ‘unacceptable’ proposals for a sand and gravel quarry. A team of consultants assessing the impact of a quarry between Clifton Hampden and Culham have criticised the scheme for the effects it will have on the landscape. The consultants’ report concludes with an objection ‘in principle’ to the application for the quarry, which is due to be decided on next month. The report reads: “With overview of the project and assessment process it appears highly likely that the proposals will lead to significant adverse landscape and visual effects over an extended period, leading to major and unacceptable impacts. “In the meantime and to the extent that the scheme could not be supported or accommodated on landscape grounds, we propose continuing an ‘in principle’ landscape objection to the application scheme.” There has been widespread opposition to the quarry led by a campaign group called Burcot and Clifton Hampden for the Protection of the River Thames (Bachport). The group’s spokesman Giles Baxter said: “We have always maintained that the quarry will have an unacceptable impact on a beautiful section of the River Thames within the Oxford Green Belt. “Better alternative sites with limited impact on the landscape are available.” Peter Andrew, group director from the developers Hills Quarry Products, said: “We are in discussion with Oxfordshire County Council and their landscape consultant regarding their areas of concern.”
