Tattoo artist helps cancer patients feel positive again By Eva Astreinidou A TATTOO artist in Witney is giving cancer patients a ‘sense of normality’ after they have undergone lifechanging surgery. Felicity Denham, from Corn Street’s Hook and Eye tattoo parlour, uses her skills to help breast cancer sufferers and also uses tattoos to camouflage scars. Miss Denham tattoos life-like nipples on women who have undergone breast surgery and draws eyebrows on people with alopecia or those who have undergone chemotherapy. Speaking about her ‘humbling’ work, she said: “My medical work is very fulfi lling. The part I enjoy is the difference from when I fi rst see the clients to when they leave. “Procedures like a mastectomy can really affect women. Especially in the UK when they take the nipple away. “It is often hard for them to be confronted with that.” She said she creates a three-dimensional looking nipple from, very often, flat tissue. Speaking about what the experience means to her, she said: “Some of my clients have called me an angel, but for me they are my angels because they have done the hard bit. “It is an honour for me that they put their faith in me.” She added: “A lot of people take normality for granted. But getting a bit of normal back for these women is everything.

Felicity Denham says her work is fulfilling “It can be extremely emotional when they see the fi nal result.” Her fi rst client was her aunt, who underwent the surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Miss Denham was inspired to start her work in medical tattooing while she was in a relationship with an Army medic. Since then, she underwent extensive training in both cosmetic and medical tattooing. She said: “A lot of his friends would go to Afghanistan and come back with all sorts of injuries and scars. “I realised how much the option of helping fi x that means to people.” Her medical tattoos are at a reduced rate, and her work for women who have undergone mastectomies is free.

their food this week. They were taking part in masterclasses held at Cogges Manor Farm Museum in Witney as part of Science Oxford’s Kitchen Science Workshops, which
