MP TARGETED IN ELECTION ROW • Former independent MP candidate Omar Selim has called for a re-run of the Basingstoke vote
BASINGSTOKE MP Maria Miller has become the victim of an extraordinary attack from one of her opponents at the general election. Dr Omar Selim accused the Conservative politician of thinking “she’s a celebrity” and called for her to “do everyone a favour and just step down”. The former independent candidate also claimed that last May’s vote was “fi xed” in favour of the Conservatives – alleging that his name had not featured on several ballot papers. Mrs Miller comfortably managed to win the Basingstoke seat by more than 11,000 votes, despite the publicity that surrounded her resignation as a minister the year before over her expenses. And after starting an online campaign to have the Basingstoke election re-run, Dr Selim questioned how Mrs Miller was able to win by such a margin. He said: “It doesn’t make sense because so many people didn’t want her before the election. “It’s clear to me that the election was fi xed – how else can you

explain how they turned out? “She thinks she’s some kind of celebrity, but she’s not. “To me, it’s clear that the people don’t want her, and so she should do everyone a favour and just step down.” Mrs Miller chose not to respond to the comments about her when approached by the Observer, although she did label Dr Selim’s words on the election system as “very serious allegations”. Dr Selim, of Old Basing, managed to claim 392 votes from the Basingstoke ballot, having chosen not to attend the results night on May 7. And the 73-year-old admitted that his low tally had played a part in his decision to launch his online petition, which has so far received over 5,000 signatures of support from dissatisfied voters. • Continues on page 2
