Witney and Carterton line discussed by county council A CO COUNTY council proposal to consider improving public transconsi port links across Oxfordshire – inc including reopening the Witney and Carterton railway line – were unanimously approved on Tuesday. Bob Johnston, county councillor for Kennington and Radley, tabled the motion for the council to increase its support for rail infrastructure. It comes 45 years after the last train ran on the line, with the tracks having been long since torn up. And Laura Price, councillor for Witney South and Central, was optimistic that it could lead to discussions about setting up the line once again. Cllr Price said: “It’s great to see the idea cropping up, and I think it’s a good indication of how we’re growing as a town. She continued: “We know our roads are at breaking point and we need another solution, so I’m happy to see those other alternatives being given airtime. “The sticking point is always

money, but I think that if as a county we’re united behind the idea of having a good public transport network, we all need to be singing from the same hymn sheet to allow all the areas in our county to grow.” In recent years other rail options, including trams and a monorail, have been considered to help alleviate traffic on the A40 by getting people to use public transport instead. Hugh Jaeger, of the Witney Oxford Transport Group, said: “It’s good news to take that line seriously. “For years campaigners have thought that light rail such as trams would be the best solution, but the more we look at it, the more we realise it could be either a tram train or a heavy rail solution that works best. He added: “I would encourage the county council to properly evaluate both.”
