Opinion split as parking curbs given the go-ahead

By Samantha McGregor NEW parking restrictions are to come into force in Bicester to stop commuters and town centre workers parking in residential streets. The changes are being introduced by Oxfordshire County Council because of concerns among residents and local councillors that on-street parking is creating safety problems and causing obstructions. The new restrictions, which have twice been the subject of public consultation, are expected to come into force in July and will be enforced by police. No waiting notices and double yellow lines will be painted in Bucknell Road, from the junction with Stoneburge Crescent to Field Street, and the restrictions will apply from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm. Similar measures will be imposed in Kings Avenue, which will prevent vehicles parking there between 11am and 1pm, Monday to Friday. Other problem areas, Withington Road, Bernwood Road and Campbell Close, will also see restricted parking measures introduced. However, several residents have expressed concern over the changes. These included one Stoneburge Crescent resident, who said: “This will just move the problem to Stoneburge Crescent, which is a private road. “We struggle with parents from Brookside School, and teachers and

staff parking in the area, and we will never be able to get out of our Crescent. What about helping this by continuing the proposed lines past the Crescent to protect us?” Another resident who lives in Field Street, where most properties do not have off-street parking, said the move left them without anywhere to park between 8am and 6pm, and would ‘decrease the value’ of houses. But resident Les Sibley, a supporter of the restrictions, said: “Bucknell Road is horrible to try and get down and we haven’t really started North West Bicester eco town yet which will produce much more traffic in the area. “We have had households complaining cars are blocking their driveways during the school run. “We had to do something – doing nothing was not an option.” Mr Sibley said the situation would be monitored and if the changes caused problems for other residents they would be reviewed. Cllr Yvonne Constance, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for environment, approved the new measures last month. Restrictions in other parts of Bicester including along Mallards Way, Hunt Close, Rowan Road and Dryden Avenue will also proceed as there were no objections. A further consultation will take place over planned changes to parking in Brashfield Road.
