New facilities are āmore than just a place to play footballā By George Welch GRASSROOTS football in Witney has received a huge boost after a new cutting edge pitch opened in the town. The existing pitch at Henry Box School, which was prone to waterlogging, has been transformed into an all-weather 3G artificial grass pitch with new energy efficient LED fittings, fencing and goals. This is on top of new changing rooms and social area. Funding for the Ā£368,000 Gordon Way facility came from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund (Ā£212,044) and district council investment (Ā£156,389). Andy Earnshaw, from the Oxfordshire FA, said: āWith this investment, a much-needed new addition to football playing and training facilities in Witney has been made possible. āIt is fantastic to have this state-ofthe-art facility in the town and we look forward to working with the project partners to support both new and existing football fans to benefit from this exciting development.ā Witney clubs, including Tower Hill FC and Witney Vikings FC, as well as pupils from Henry Box and other schools will use the improved pitch. There will also be training sessions organised by Oxford United and leisure centre operator GLL Better, which
will manage the site on behalf of West Oxfordshire District Council. By providing high-quality facilities, along with coaching, the investment hopes to attract new players. The Oxfordshire FA and the council can now deliver their five-year Football Development Plan, a vision of how sport will be played on site with an emphasis on increasing participation. It is expected the number of teams using the site will grow from 14 to 49. Of the 35 new teams, three will be female sides. This, as well as planned āThis Girl Canā sessions, will help to raise female football participation. Councillor Jeanette Baker, cabinet member for leisure at WODC, celebrated the new pitch at the official opening on Friday. She said: āThis is a wonderful facility which represents a major advance on the previous pitch. āIt will play a major contribution in helping to improve grassroots sport along with the health and fitness of many people in Witney and the surrounding area.ā Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, added: āThese facilities are more than places to play football at. āThese facilities are hubs of physical activity, the bedrock of local communities and āhomes from homeā for so many who also use them as social outlets to learn new skills, gain work experience and other qualifications.ā
