Life sentence for man guilty of savage murder over drugs By George Welch A ‘SAVAGE’ drug addict who stabbed a man to death in a fl at over a drug deal has been sentenced to life in jail for murder. Raymond Morgan, of Newland Road, Banbury, will spend at least the next 19 years behind bars for the murder of 25-year-old Mark Pawley. The 53-year-old was unanimously found guilty of murdering Mr Pawley but was acquitted of killing Adrian Fannon, 39. Officers found the bodies of Mr Pawley and Mr Fannon at around 6.45pm on October 1 last year. A post-mortem examination concluded that both men died from multiple stab wounds. All three men were heroin and cocaine addicts, the jury was told, and a drug deal was taking place in the fl at where Morgan lived. Two knives and a broken chair were found in the fl at and there was blood on the walls, sofa and TV. Defending, Tracy Ayling QC said it was possible that Mr Fannon and Mr Pawley had had a fight. Judge Ian Pringle described the assault on Mr Pawley as “savage and prolonged”, which included the use of two knives and resulted in at least 20 stab wounds. Sentencing Morgan at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, the judge
added: “ Why you behaved like this, nobody will ever know.” Before Morgan’s sentence was revealed, Mr Pawley’s older sister Jade Pawley read out an impact statement to the court, saying “there are no words” for what Morgan has done to the family. Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kirby, of Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, said the case highlighted the deadly costs of drug misuse. He said: “Despite overwhelming evidence Raymond Morgan denied any involvement in the murder of Mark Pawley which meant his family had to endure months of uncertainty and pain as the case was prepared for trial. “My thoughts go out to the families of both men who died and I would like to thank them for their patience, dignity and support during our investigation and throughout the subsequent trial. “This case evidences the very real cost of drug misuse as the court heard how all those involved suffered long-term addictions.” Morgan was arrested the same day the bodies were discovered and charged with murdering both men three days later. He was sentenced on Friday following a two-week trial.
