Four-year-old now recovering well (01672) 516797

Brave Elize is a shining ‘Little Star’ A FOUR-YEAR-old girl who overcame a fear of doctors, nurses and needles as she put up a brave fight against cancer has had her courage recognised with a special award. Elize Thiery had just turned one when she was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour, a type of kidney cancer that affects about 80 children every year in the UK. Her mum Stefania told how she worried for her only child as she stopped growing and putting on weight for over a year after having major surgery and enduring long spells of chemotherapy. But Elize, from Sutton Courtenay, caught up within weeks of fi nishing the treatment in January which saved her life. Now the youngster, who attends pre-school and is preparing to start school next year, has been honoured for her bravery with a Star Award from Cancer Research UK Kids

& Teens, in partnership with TK Maxx. Stefania, 30, said: “Elize has been through the most traumatic experience, yet she faced it with enormous courage and resilience. For several weeks at the start of her treatment, she cried every day. She was afraid of the needles and doctors and nurses who were trying to help her. “But she proved herself to be really strong and grew to like and trust the medical staff more and more each week. The fi rst time she didn’t cry during an appointment we had been told her tumours had shrunk. She made us feel very, very proud. “By the end of her treatment, she wanted to help the doctors and nurses when they made checks or carried out treatment.” Elize was treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where she took part in a clinical trial

developing a new and kinder treatment for her type of cancer. She now has scans every three months and is currently clear of cancer. Stefania added: “She has recovered well. She stopped growing during treatment but she has caught up and her height and weight is now normal for a child of her age. We are very grateful for the treatment she received.” Each and every child nominated for a Star Award receives the accolade, which is backed by a host of celebrities including Olympic medallist Greg Rutherford and Strictly Come Dancing stars Kevin and Karen Clifton. Jenny Makin, Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens spokesperson for Oxford, said: “Elize is a true ‘star’ who richly deserves this accolade. VË Í ÖjÄË Ë¬?~jËÏ
