face ban from town A PUBLIC consultation is expected to take place this year on plans to ban begging, rough sleeping and on-street drinking in Banbury town centre. Cherwell District Council’s executive said the move was necessary to “protect visitors from being exploited and intimidated�. It came after more than 100 complaints from traders, shoppers and visitors about begging and anti-social behaviour over the past 19 months. complaints about anti-social behaviour and drinking had been reported to police. There had also been an increase in drug paraphernalia found in the area of St Mary’s Church, People’s Park and People’s Church, the council said. Cherwell has the power to create a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) and will hold a five-week consultation on the proposal. The order would ban begging, alcohol consumption and rough sleeping within agreed boundaries in the town.
