TWO Basingstoke men accused of stabbing another man to death in Popley have denied playing a part in his murder. Liam Darvill, 20, and Thomas Harris, 22, both pleaded not guilty to killing Kempshott resident Dean Evans at Winchester Crown Court this week. Mr Evans was found lying in the middle of the road suffering from severe stab wounds after police were called to

an address in Benham Road at about 5.30am on April 8. Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) rushed the popular 31-year-old, known to friends as “Deano” and “Curly”, to Basingstoke hospital, but he died from his injuries a short time later. Hampshire police charged Darvill,
of Beaconsfield Road, and Harris, of Eastrop Way, with the murder two days later. A plea and case management hearing date was then set for Monday. In front of a packed public gallery at Winchester Crown Court, Darvill, who was wearing a black T-shirt, and Harris, who wore a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confi rm their not guilty pleas. Both men will now go on trial for the murder of Mr Evans, with Judge Ian
Dove setting a start date for the trial, which is estimated to take two to three weeks, of October 4. A third unnamed man, aged 22 and from Basingstoke, was also arrested on suspicion of playing a part in the alleged fatal assault, although he is not now expected to be charged. Darvill and Harris have been remanded in custody until the start of their trial.
