Swim teachers hope inspirational story will boost CPR training

Honour for fireman who saved drowning toddler

By Adam Flinn A NEWBURY firefighter who saved a two-year-old from drowning is hoping the story will highlight the importance of resuscitation training.

Oliver Parker was on holiday with his family in Dubai earlier this year when he saw the girl, called Erin, unconscious in a swimming pool.

Erin’s dad pulled her out but she had turned blue.

Quick-thinking Oliver managed to save her life by performing CPR. After three minutes Erin’s eyes opened and she took a deep breath.

The toddler was taken to hospital and made a full recovery. Within days she was back on her feet as if nothing had happened.

On Saturday, dad-of-two Oliver was honoured for his actions by charity the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) with their Roll of Honour.

“At the time, in that split second, it was like everyone around the pool froze in time, in shock,” said Oliver.

“I’m not sure if it was my fi re service training or the fact of being a dad that made me react so quickly, but it did really bring home to me that knowing what to do in an emergency and actually doing it are two totally different things.

“It will be a day I will never forget, and I was so pleased to see Erin when

she returned from hospital playing as normal.”

Oliver’s story has inspired friends and family to learn CPR and fi rst aid training.

He said: “I’ve been really surprised with the response and I’m very proud to be recognised by the STA. “If by sharing this story – which can truly happen to anyone – and showing the importance of CPR training and the immediate positive effects it can have on saving a life, then great. There have been two positive outcomes.”

The Roll of Honour is not given out lightly. It is only the eighth time in 17 years it has been awarded.

Oliver was presented with the honour by STA president Richard Timms.

He said: “I’m personally very proud to honour Oliver on behalf of the STA. “As he rightly said, faced with a terrifying split-second situation like this, especially with a child, panic can set in for even the bravest.

“But thankfully Oliver didn’t panic, and his quick thinking and actions that day saved this young girl’s life.

“We have also been equally touched by the ripple effect of this story.

“Oliver has inspired others to get CPR training – a vital lifesaving skill that we believe everyone should learn.

“He is fully deserving of this honour.”

Control tower grant won’t have be repaid News Bites GREENHAM Parish Council will not have to pay back a grant of more than ÂŁ420,000 for its control tower refurbishment after the provider said it was “satisfiedâ€? with the project’s status.

A letter from Social Investment Business (SIB), which gave out the grant, confi rmed that the four questions it had asked of the council had now been answered.

These related a plan of how the council intended to fi nance the remainder of the project, and a breakdown of what work was still required.

Had the SIB not been satisfied, it could have meant the council having to repay some or all of the grant.

In the letter, Deborah Smart, the SIB’s head of programmes,

said: “I am happy to confi rm that the conditions I set out in my letter of March 13, 2017 have been met. “[The council] will continue to provide us with information and updates regarding the progress of the project until such time as the building is complete and open to the public, as per the terms and conditions of the original grant agreement.�

David Fowler, clerk of the parish council, said: “I met with the SIB last week to address the four conditions set out in their letter. “As such, the deadline of June 13 has been met and we are now in a process of routine project oversight. “I expect to keep the SIB updated regarding progression of the project.�

THE redevelopment of the southern half of Newbury town centre – including major changes being considered for the Kennet Centre – was the main topic at the Newbury Vision conference last Thursday.

Plans were revealed that could see a new leisure offering such as a bowling alley or trampoline park take up the now empty unit which housed TK Maxx until last week.

The idea was revealed by Roger Gorham, the director of property development company Bride Hall, which is managing the Kennet Centre.

It comes after plans to create a ‘restaurant quarter’ in the centre were recently unveiled.

Mr Gorham said: “It was very sad to see an operator like

TK Maxx going out of the town centre and we tried to retain them but they made their decision. “While it’s sad to say goodbye, it gives us an opportunity to work on the south side of our holdings and the opportunity to look at potentially a larger redevelopment. “We are looking at a number of options, including a straight replacement, the introduction of leisure – maybe a trampoline operator or bowling alley – or a new link from Market Street to the centre.�

Mr Gorham also spoke about the possibility of extending upwards and looking into building a hotel or residential units above the vacant TK Maxx building.

He continued: “Thoughts are at a very initial stage, but it was worthwhile raising it as it does provide a big opportunity for us

and help to improve the south side of Newbury.�

It would coincide with the redevelopment of the Market Street area immediately south of the Kennet Centre, where work is due to begin early next year.

Developers Grainger also gave an update at the conference, setting out how the work would be phased.

The fi rst stages would mean the bus station and Highfield Avenue is demolished to allow for temporary car parking, paving the way for work to begin on building the multi-storey car park – expected to take around 38 weeks.

Once that is complete construction would take place on the rest of the site, which would last for well over a year, with a target fi nishing date of late 2020.

updates from Newbury BID (Business Improvement District), Newbury Town Council and West Berkshire Council’s transport team.

Newbury BID managing director Russell Downing talked about new events coming to the town centre, including a jazz and blues festival, inflatable horse racing, outdoor cinema screenings and a Santa run.

Deputy town council leader Anthony Pick spoke about the lack of office space in the town and the possibility of creating a new business park in the future, as well as a new entertainment venue for between 2,000 and 5,000 people.

The A339 was the main focus of the transport update, including measures for the Sainsbury’s roundabout that were revealed at the start of last week.

WEST BERKS: Newbury and Thatcham will appoint their new mayors for 2017/18 with special ceremonies on Sunday.

The ceremony in Newbury will be at the Corn Exchange from 10am with a service at St Nicolas Church at 11.45am.

Thatcham’s event starts at 3pm at the Frank Hutchings Community Hall.

The outgoing mayor for Newbury is Julian Swift-Hook, while Thatcham’s is Ellen Crumly.

Traditionally the deputy mayor takes on the role for the following year. Newbury’s current deputy is David Fenn, and Thatcham’s is Nathan Gregory.

Council election THATCHAM: By-elections for the vacant seats on West Berkshire Council and Thatcham Town Council following the death of Roger Croft will be held on June 8 – the same day as the general election.

Mr Croft represented Thatcham South and Crookham on both councils until his death in March, six weeks after being involved in a car crash in France.

The deadline for nominations for candidates is 4pm today.

Heads warn of ‘funding crisis’ in West Berkshire

HEADTEACHERS of 53 schools in West Berkshire have written to parents and carers warning of a “funding crisis”.

It was sent out last month, stating that a new national funding formula will mean that tough decisions would need to be taken, and that they could not guarantee that such cuts would not affect teaching.

The headteachers also said they would be raising their concerns with West Berkshire Council and the Government.

The letter said: “With increasing costs placed onto all schools, including higher pension and national insurance contributions, as well as the introduction of the apprenticeship levy, the new formula will not bring the benefits that we had hoped to see for West Berkshire children.

“We will work hard to ensure that cuts have the least impact on teaching possible.

“However, rising costs and a frozen budget mean that tough decisions will have to be taken, and we cannot guarantee that such cuts will not affect teach-

ing, despite doing our utmost to prevent this.”

The new funding formula was unveiled last year as a way of evenly distributing funding out to schools across the country.

Under the formula, West Berkshire would see its funding drop by 0.2 per cent, or £217,654, while some authorities would see their allocation increase by up to eight per cent.

The National Audit Office has estimated that it will see a £3billion cut in real-terms across all schools by 2020.

It is due to come into force from September, however the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has warned that the general election could see its implementation delayed, or even abandoned altogether.

Paul Field, headteacher at Basildon Primary School and the Green party candidate for Newbury in the upcoming election, was one of those who signed the letter.

He said: “For a government to deliberately mislead people with statements about funding

“They know that in real terms schools will lose £3bn by 2020 and their dishonesty is an insult to both the elector-

ate and the professionals who serve our communities.”

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “The Government has protected the core schools budget in real terms

and other activities in a relaxing setting.

“People who have come to the sessions say they are a lifeline,” said Becky O’Melia, centre ranger at the Nature Discovery Centre.

“The opportunity to spend time in a relaxing environment with others who truly understand what they’re going through is vital – not just for the wellbeing of their loved ones living with dementia but also for their own wellbeing.

NEWBURY: A footwear firm has been forced to pay £42,000 for ignoring staff pension rules.

Johnsons Shoes Company, which has one of its nine branches in the Parkway Shopping Centre, was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 costs for not checking whether its staff qualified for the workplace pension.

Charles Counsell of the Pensions Regulator said: “The failure by Johnsons to act, despite our repeated warnings, left it with a completely unnecessary bill.”

Dementia cafe needs cash MORE funding is needed to help a cafe that helps people with dementia keep running following a successful 10-week trial.

The Nature Memories Cafe – based at the Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham – needs £5,440 in order to stay open for the next two years.

It is a free weekly drop-in session where people with dementia and their friends and family can join in with crafts

since 2010, with school funding at its highest level on record at almost £41bn in 2017/18.

“That is set to rise, as pupil numbers rise over the next two years to £42bn by 2019/20.

“We recognise that schools are facing cost pressures, which is why we will continue to provide support to help them use their funding in cost effective ways and make efficiencies.”

Peta Stoddart-Crompton, spokesperson for West Berkshire Council, said: “We fully appreciate the funding pressure falling on schools and have responded to the DfE funding consultation expressing our views about the proposed impact on West Berkshire schools.

“We have made suggestions about how the formula could be changed to deliver a better local outcome and await a response.

“In the meantime we are providing every assistance we can, working with the headteacher associations and the Schools’ Forum to help schools manage within their available resources.”

Life-saving blood donors honoured

THREE blood donors from Newbury and Thatcham who could have helped save up to 900 lives between them have been honoured for their lifelong commitment.

Mike Harmsworth, Phil Saich and Sheila Weaving were presented with commemorative medals after donating blood for more than 40 years each.

All three have made 100 donations in their lifetimes.

Mike, 67, from Thatcham, has been giving blood for around 48 years after a work colleague recommended he give it a try.

He said: “My wife, mother and several other members of my family have all needed blood transfusions after major operations.

“Blood can be used in so many ways to help save someone’s life at no cost or danger to me.”

It was a similar story for 69-yearold Sheila, also from Thatcham, who was also encouraged by her colleagues.

She said: “Giving blood only takes a little of my time but helps others and can perhaps save their life.”

Phil, 59, from Newbury, has more than 40 years of blood-giving under his belt.

He said: “I started as I was a keen motorcyclist and wanted to make sure blood was available if I ever needed it.

Each blood donation is said to potentially save the lives of up to three people. Of the three per cent of the population who give blood, just one per cent of those reach 100 donations.

Karen Healy, senior marketing coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “These loyal

donors are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks.

“Between them, they have saved hundreds of lives and improved the lives of countless others who have required blood transfusions.

“These donors are an inspiration to us all.”

Facebook fly-tipper fined £500 A NEWBURY man who accepted waste removal bookings on Facebook has been fined £500 after a pile of rubbish was found dumped in Oxfordshire.

Adrian Tarft, 37, of Wash Common, pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates’ Court to four charges of breaching the Environmental Protection Act and one of transporting waste without being a registered carrier.

The rubbish – including a television, tyres and carpet – was discovered by a farmer along the A417 London Road in Harwell.

Officers traced the rubbish to an address in Reading, where a resident confi rmed she had made a booking with Tarft to dispose of it, and pointed them to the advert on Facebook.

WEST BERKS: The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) wants primary school children to enter a poster making competition on the theme of ‘How I can make a difference to the environment’.

It is being run by AWE to mark World Environment Day, which takes place on June 5.

The winning posters chosen by AWE judges will be displayed in

UKIP urges supporters: Vote Tory UKIP will not field a candidate for Newbury at next month’s general election, the party’s local branch has confirmed.

It is suggesting supporters vote for Conservative candidate Richard Benyon instead.

Roy Tubb, chairman of UKIP Newbury, said: “All members of the committee agreed the main issue in this election is the UK withdrawal from the European Union “Recent electoral history shows that Newbury cannot be considered a safe Conservative seat. With this in mind, UKIP Newbury has decided reluctantly not to field a candidate, because that would only split the potential Brexit vote. “We suggest supporters consider voting for Richard Benyon, if only to increase the chance of the referendum result being properly maintained.�

Catherine Anderson came third for UKIP in Newbury at the 2015 election with 6,195 votes. This will be the fi rst time the party hasn’t stood in the town since 1993.

Area ‘very safe’ despite huge rise in hate crime

By Adam Flinn CRIME has risen by almost eight per cent in West Berkshire over the past year, with significant jumps in the number of hate crimes, sexual offences and drug offences.

Thames Valley Police recorded 8,038 crimes across West Berkshire between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017.

Hate crime went up by 43 per cent, with most of this relating to racism.

Sexual offences rose by more than 21 per cent, with the number of rapes reported going from 69 in 2015/16 to 86.

There was a similar rise in the number of drugs offences from 431 to 524, although the figure is still less than it was in 2014/15.

But there were reductions in the number of robberies and burglaries being reported, and in domestic abuse.

Superintendent Jim Weems, local policing area commander for West Berkshire, said: “While we have seen an increase in overall reports of crime this year, figures remain low per head of population and

there has been a decrease in some key areas. “Raised awareness and confidence is reflected in the increases in reports of crimes such as sexual offences. “Despite this increase we know that this remains an under-reported crime and we are committed to encouraging people to come forward and report these incidents to us. “Despite some of the increases this year West Berkshire local police area continues to be a very safe place to live, work and visit and those incidents that do occur are dealt with robustly.�

Across the Thames Valley there was a 7.2 per cent increase in reported crime compared to last year, with 129,449 incidents in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Deputy chief constable John Campbell said: “The increase of domestic incidents, hate crime and some sexual offences demonstrates the growing confidence of victims to report offences. These areas of crime have been underreported for years.�

Youngsters to battle for photo prize THE theme for this year’s competition run by Thatcham Photographic Club has been announced.

Youngsters aged up to 17 are asked to take pictures with the theme ‘the natural world’, and what this means to them.

Students living or studying within 10 miles of Thatcham can submit up to three photos for the competition, which is again sponsored by the Newbury & Thatcham Observer.

Paul Roberts, chairman of Thatcham Photographic Club, said: “This is our third year of this student competition and the catchment area has been enlarged to include schools from Newbury to Theale. “The club encourages young people to take an interest in photography and frequently works with young people’s groups on activities and workshops to foster and develop photographic awareness.�

Rower rejoices PANGBOURNE: An inspirational former headmaster who suffered a brain tumour that left him without sight and partially disabled has completed a charity row along the River Thames.

James Shone finished the 128.5-mile challenge on May 1, having started out from Lechlade on April 26.

He has so far raised around £43,000 for the charity he set up, called I Can and I Am. James said: “Having lost my sight and also having two small strokes, it made my left side very out of tune with my right.

“I wanted to try and run a half marathon – couldn’t do that.

Last year I wanted to do a long walk – again, couldn’t do it.

“So it came from a process of elimination that rowing was one of the things I could do.”

Construction to start on second flood bund

WORK on Thatcham’s second flood basin gets under way next Monday, while plans for the third were unanimously approved by West Berkshire Council last week.

Construction at land just off Tull Way will create a bund that will hold back flood water coming off the hills to the north.

It is the second bund to be built at Thatcham, with the fi rst at Cold Ash Hill completed three years ago.

Work is expected to be fi nished by October 2017.

Jon Winstanley, the council’s projects manager, said: “We are looking forward to delivering this important flood defence scheme for Thatcham.

“We will be working closely with all parties concerned to ensure the works cause as little inconvenience as possible.”

Last Wednesday councillors on the eastern area planning committee gave their backing to the third bund, to be built on land north of Floral Way, opposite Foxglove Way. This is a similar scheme,

Preparation work on the bund at Tull Way. Construction work begins in earnest next Monday but three mature trees will need to be removed.

Committee chairman Graham Pask said: “We are always concerned when trees are removed but we were assured it’s the only way.

“We are obviously supportive because there’s nothing worse than houses being flooded.

Imagine three feet of water in your house – it’s a nightmare.

“It happens and is gone in about half a day. But the conse-

quences last for over a year, so it went through unanimously.”

A fourth bund is also planned for the Francis Baily area in south east Thatcham.

Severe flooding hit 1,100 houses in the town in 2007.

Team leader admits £10k refund fraud at town store A NEWBURY shop worker who stole almost £10,000 through fraudulent refunds has escaped a prison sentence.

James Parsons, 30, of Martingale Close, pleaded guilty to stealing £9,653.51 in cash from the Wickes branch in Newbury over a four-month period.

It happened between August 1 and November 18 last year when Parsons was working as a team leader at the building supplies store.

He made up product codes to put in the computer system to obtain cash refunds, which he then kept.

In total he completed 65 transactions, as well as shoplifting £405.46 worth of goods that were later found at his house.

Parsons appeared at Reading Crown Court where he was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work and to pay £8,500 in compensation.

Parsons will also have to attend 30 sessions of a thinking skills programme and a 10-day rehabilitation activity.

Education is high on the agenda for Labour LABOUR’S candidate for Newbury, Alex Skirvin, talked about education as he began campaigning.

Mr Skirvin has been meeting voters and canvassing their views since it was revealed last week he will fight the general election.

He has said he is an opponent to the expansion of grammar schools.

He said: “One of the main subjects that worries people is that of education.

“I’m a fi rm opponent of the Tory grammar schools agenda.

Grammar schools are proven to lower the educational attainment of the poorest children.

“Every child has a right to a quality education – not the right to sit a single, life-defi ning exam at the age of 11.”

Mr Skirvin also spoke against university tuition fees during his fi rst speech.

He added: “I left university with nearly £50,000 of debt – it’s likely to hang around my neck for the rest of my life.

“Tuition fees are the ultimate tax on aspiration. People like me have been punished for buckling down, working hard and wanting to get on.”

Bunting slams ‘hard Brexit’ in first speech of campaign

By Adam Flinn LIBERAL Democrat candidate for Newbury, Judith Bunting, pledged to fight against a ‘hard Brexit’ as she launched her election campaign on Friday.

Party members gathered outside Newbury Town Hall to kickstart five weeks of campaigning ahead of election day on June 8.

Addressing the crowd, Mrs Bunting said she would provide the “strongest voice” for the people of West Berkshire during the EU negotiations.

She said: “The majority here said no to Brexit. To those 48,300 people, the Liberal Democrats

are fighting your corner, we are listening to your concerns, we are standing up the future of your children.

“You all know the problems Brexit will bring, you know the costs and the risks and you know what a devastating blow it will deal to our children’s futures.

“I see no faster route to dependency on handouts from big business than putting ourselves at the mercy of people like Nigel Farage, Donald Trump and now Theresa May, who wants to turn the UK into an offshore tax haven.”

Mrs Bunting also said she did not want to see Newbury become

a “commuter” town, and that it should build on its high-tech credentials.

“I have a vision for Newbury and it does not involve allowing our area to become a commuter belt for Reading and London.

“Commuting is important – I did it for long enough – but I really value the cultural and rural heritage we have here.

“I see potential for Newbury and West Berkshire to build on its platform as a high-tech hub and a centre for innovation in the green economy and renewables.

Talks over change of ownership to secure Corn Exchange future

By Adam Flinn OWNERSHIP of Newbury’s Corn Exchange could be transferred away from West Berkshire Council to help secure its long-term future.

Talks have begun to hand over the building to the Corn Exchange Trust, which has operated the venue since 2000.

The trust requested ownership to safeguard the venue’s future in the wake of its council funding being slashed by £78,000, to £174,000 a year.

A decision is expected by the end of this year, with a public consultation to be held for residents to have their say.

Grant Brisland, co-director of the Corn Exchange, said: “As we look to safeguard its future in a climate of continued funding reductions, we have asked West Berkshire Council to consider transferring the ownership of the Corn Exchange building to the trust.

“We understand that ongoing annual funding is going to be a huge challenge for West Berk-

shire Council and our proposal offers a solution that reduces their liability while ensuring that the Corn Exchange’s creative offer in the district will continue to thrive.”

West Berkshire Council converted the Corn Exchange into a performing arts venue in 1993.

Transferring ownership would allow the trust to develop the building to suit its needs.

The Corn Exchange has recently announced new plans for the area, including a partnership with Greenham Common

Trust to develop a new arts and crafts facility at Greenham Business Park.

A new Newbury-based learning centre and the expansion of its outdoor performance programme have also been announced.

Paul James, the council’s culture and libraries manager, said: “The Corn Exchange is a local organisation with a national reputation.

“Over the past two years it has been increasingly hard for us to provide fi nancial sup-

port because of an increasing demand for our services and particularly social care for our most vulnerable residents.

“We have to balance competing needs for our resources and we believe transferring the ownership of the Corn Exchange will help the trust in the long term.

“We’re grateful to the Corn Exchange for understanding the difficult position we fi nd ourselves in and look forward to continue working with them in the coming years.”

When you write a Will, it’s not for your benefit. You do it because you want to ensure that you’ve done your best to protect family and loved ones; to ease pressure - emotionally and financially when you’re no longer here.

Making your Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is something you can do for yourself - it’s a precaution you can take to protect your finances, health and wellbeing.

As we age the odds of illness or accident resulting in limited physical or mental capacity increases and with it the ability to make our own decisions or choices - from the food we eat to the health care we receive - is diminished or lost. But you have a voice and that voice can be legally recognised.

By making your LPA you can elect those that you trust and want to make

decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to. You can choose one or several people and include restrictions and guidelines for your Attorney(s) to follow. Legally, they are required to follow certain principles, including amongst others: (1) the assumption that you have capacity until it is established that you don’t (2) just because you’ve made an unwise decision does not mean you are assumed to be unable to make your own decisions and (3) any decisions must be made in your best interests.

Love story unlike any other

By Josh Cox STUFF is a love story, but not the type of one you’ve seen a million times before.

This is another kind of love story, maybe everybody’s love story.

It’s playful, funny, sad and familiar. Lead clown for Cirque du Soleil, Sean Kempton, mixes comedy, mime, clowning and the odd bit of dance in this absurdist show about love.

The much-loved result is a highly energetic and entertaining, physical piece that takes its audience on a journey through the fragility, hilarity and awkwardness that love can, more often than not, entail.

Sean has over 23 years of international experience as an actor, circus performer and director with a career spanning the West End, Broadway, The Kennedy Centre, and Las Vegas. He was an artistic director and part of the founding team of Generating Company, who tour large scale circus shows

around the world, alongside designer Mark Fisher and producer Paul Cockle.

Kempton was an original cast member in Franco Dragone’s epic water show Le Reve in Las Vegas and one of the lead clowns in Cirque Du Soleil’s productions of Kooza, Quidam and Varekai touring worldwide.

As a comedian, he has been entertaining audiences with his own brand of humour in cabarets and variety shows throughout the US and UK. Sean has been a successful teacher over the past 15 years developing his own style of workshops teaching physical theatre and comedy in Britain and is currently a core teacher for the National Centre for Circus Arts.

It is safe to say you will be in for treat on Thursday, May 25 when the show comes to the Arlington Arts Centre at 8pm.

Ready for a recital MUSIC: The well-known organist Benjamin Cunningham will be performing at St George’s Church in Wash Common on Friday, May 12.

Aldershot batted fi rst and Thatcham’s bowlers did well to limit the amount of runs they could pick up in the early stages and after 30 overs they were on 100-3.

After Callum Grover was dismissed for 54, the hosts fought back as Dan Anslow and captain Amir Hameed managed to get a late 45 runs between

them and ended on 210-9 after their 50 overs.

Despite Aldershot’s impressive end to their innings, Thatcham started off well themselves as openers Josh O’Flynn (35) and Kieran Wood (29) raced to 60 runs after nine overs.

But Wood was forced off with cramp and Thatcham slumped, losing four wickets for just 15 runs in a disastrous spell.

Ryan Gilmour (33), Stephen Bird (14) and Bishop steadied

the ship, but there was still a big task in front of them when Chris Bird joined Bishop at the crease, with Thatcham needing 33 runs to win.

A Bishop six moved Thatcham past the 200 mark and they seemed on course for victory, especially when Bird smashed the ball for what looked like another maximum moments later.

But somehow Aldershot’s Ahmed Faraz managed to pull off an unbelievable catch

to send Bird packing and Ben Denton-Powell came on as Thatcham’s fi nal batter.

He and Bishop managed to get up to 209, but just as a remarkable comeback seemed possible Bishop was bowled for 21 to end the match in dramatic fashion.

Thatcham got nine points for their efforts and sit eighth out of 10 in the standings.

Their fi rst home fi xture of the season is this Saturday against Beaconsfield.

Mauled by the Bears THAMES Valley Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club put in a spirited performance but ultimately lost their final game of the season against Warwickshire Bears on Sunday.

They were beaten 49-29, but remained in touch until halftime against a very strong Bears side that hasn’t lost a game all season.

The Bears got off to a good start and had a 12-4 lead at the end of the fi rst quarter, with Vickie Simmonds and Joe Humphreys getting the Kings’ points.

In the second quarter the Kings closed the deficit to trail

21-14 at half-time after scores from Humphreys, Greg Rose and Reece Barker.

But the Bears were back in dominant form after the break and added 18 points to the Kings’ four.

The Kings edged the fi nal quarter 11-10 courtesy of Humphreys, Barker and Peter Rapley, but not enough to prevent a 20-point defeat.

The match concluded the Kings’ Third Division South and West season.

The Kings have 17 points and look set to fi nish fourth out of the seven teams after winning five of their 12 games.

GOLF: West Berks Golf Club have progressed to the second round of the Hillman Trophy with a 5½ to 1½ win away at Henley.

But it was a mixed week for the club’s teams as the seniors lost for the first time this season at Drayton Park, the scratch side lost 4-3 at home to Reading and the men’s team were beaten 3-2 at Ogbourne Downs.

The ladies salvaged a draw in their game at North Wilts.

Rob Bridgeman won the men’s May medal, while Harry White took the midweek medal.

Ann Davies followed up her win in the Turner Davies Trophy by winning the ladies’ monthly medal this week.

Season awards FOOTBALL: Following an impressive season Hungerford Town have been handing out awards to the team.

Supporters’ player of the year was Luke Williams, who also picked up manager’s player of the year alongside George Legg. Players’ player of the year was Jon Boardman.

Young player of the year went to Kallum Thomas, the merit award to Stacey Wood, clubman of the year to Alan O’Donohue and the Ray Brown Award went to Steve Skipworth.

Davis Cup stars TENNIS: Davis Cup professionals Danny Sapsford and Luke Milligan will take training sessions at Newbury Tennis Club this Sunday from 10am.

They will be holding doubles tactics masterclasses, technical clinics and high intensity basket drills as well as a fastest serve competition.

Poor result FOOTBALL: Mortimer ended their Thames Valley Premier Division season with a 7-2 thrashing at Marlow United on Saturday.

They seem set to finish sixth in the standings with 36 points from their 26 games.

By Adam Flinn A DAMINDA Kolugula century didn’t help Falkland Cricket Club to victory as they were beaten away at Marlow in their season opener on Saturday.

In a closely fought game, Falkland set an impressive total of 264 for Marlow to chase after losing their fi nal wicket in the 50th over.

But Marlow surpassed Falkland’s score with one over to spare, to win by three wickets.

Falkland batted fi rst and got off to a steady start, with Paul Jenkins hitting a solid 39 while James Bird and Danny Williams fell for six and nine runs respectively.

Jim Ettridge lasted 27 runs before he was caught, paving the way for Kolugala to begin his knock of 108.

It put Falkland in a strong position, but aside from Craig Williams’s 27 the remaining batters did little to add to the total.

Imran Nawaz proved to be the nemesis to Falkland as the Marlow bowler was responsible for five wickets falling, including that of Kolugula who was fi nally caught by Nick Paskins.

He also dismissed Craig Williams, as well as Jason Williams (2), Charlie Dale (3) and Shiryar Ahmed (2), while Khalid Zafar Malik (8) was run out.

Falkland’s fi nal total was 264 all out, leaving Marlow with a bit of work to do if they wanted to take victory.

They got off to a good start as openers Nawaz and Barney Hogg scored 34 and 40.

And the runs kept coming with Nick Paskins and Graeme Paskins adding 25 and 20 as they surged past the 100 point mark.

Mark Quamil produced the best performance for Marlow as he racked up 67 before eventually being caught

by Ahmed.

Jason Williams bowled Kirk Graham for 18 and Kevin Hudson was caught for just two.

But the not out pairing of Simon Carter (20) and Jeremy Barry (5) were able to get Marlow across the fi nish line with an over to spare.

The eight points earned from the match puts Falkland seventh in Division One of the Thames Valley Cricket League and they next host Stoke Green this Saturday.

Two balls short of a draw LIKE their counterparts in Falkland, Newbury Cricket Club suffered defeat in their first match of the season, although they came close to pinching a draw.

Opponents Purley-on-Thames batted fi rst and set a total of 232-5 in 52 overs, including a century from

Amit Rawal. Charlie Anstey, Martin Walker and Surya Sastry were Newbury’s best batters as all three set 30-plus scores, but the side were coming up short on the total.

Needing to survive two more balls to rescue a draw, Newbury saw the fi nal wicket of Bobby

Vynatheya fall and the match ended in defeat.

They will hope for better luck in their next Thames Valley Cricket League Division 3A match away to Cove 2nds on Saturday.
