WOMAN DIES IN HOUSE FIRE Two escape blaze which claimed life of ‘sweet angel’
A WITNESS has described seeing the flames of a deadly house fire which killed a woman engulf a Popley home. Fire fighters were called to the house in Buckfast Close just before 5am on
Sunday, March 8. Two people managed to escape the blaze - which police are not currently treating as suspicious. The woman – who has not yet been formally named by police, but thought
by neighbours to be in her 20s – was pronounced dead at the scene. A Popley resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I thought it was a bin on fi re but then I saw flames, and whoosh. It was right up the height of
the house.” A 26-year-old man was arrested but later released with no further action, police confi rmed. Coroner’s assistant Heather French said a post mortem was carried out yes-
terday and an inquest into the woman’s death is expected to open today. Rita Bathe, 68, of Romsey Close, said: “For a girl of that age to die – it is just so sad.” • Continues on page 3
SUPPORT ALAN STONE A strong voice for BASINGSTOKE At last, a voice from Basingstoke for the people of Basingstoke. Alan Stone has lived and worked in the Town for 48 of his 50 years. He is a business owner and employer who understands that saving profits helps people get through the hard times. Nothing in this life should be taken for granted. Rights have to be earned and come with a price tag of commitment. Over the last few years too many people have come to expect ‘something for nothing’ It has been expected that Government will hand out everything ‘I need’ because I am ‘entitled’ Both the Labour and Conservative governments are guilty of allowing this to happen.
