Demolition enters final stage ahead of area redevelopment Knocking down of car park tower will allow extra spaces By Samantha McGregor THE fi nal part of a Banbury multistorey car park is set to be demolished this month. The stairwell tower at Bolton Road car park was retained due to technical issues with the telecoms mounted on the roof when the rest of the fivestorey structure was demolished in 2016. It was closed in June of that year with “immediate effect” after “significant structural issues” were found after a routine inspection. After the rest of the 620-space car park was razed, the site re-opened as a 142-space temporary facility. Later this month the car park will close to enable the fi nal piece of the structure to be demolished to create an additional 10 parking spaces. Cllr George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said: “We are now in a position to demolish the fi nal remains of the tower and whilst this may cause some short-term disruption, it will have a long-term benefit by providing an additional 10 spaces for drivers. “During these works additional dust may be created; the contractors will

do their best to minimise this, but we would like to forewarn customers. “We do apologise for any disruption while these works are taking place and thank customers for their patience during this time.” Initial work started this week and a section of the car park will be closed. Work is expected to be completed by March 16. Between January 29 and February 2, the entire car park will be completely closed while demolition of the topmost section takes place. Rubble from the demolished car park is being recycled to form roads on a new housing estate. Bolton Road is identified within Cherwell’s Local Plan as a key site for development to potentially incorporate opportunities for a hotel, housing, retail and restaurant units. Last month Cherwell backed proposals to buy the nearby Castle Quay shopping centre after a developer pulled out of a major regeneration development of the shopping centre. It plans to press ahead with the redevelopment to ensure the town has a “thriving” town centre.

Peak performance Phil Marshall will be only too pleased to take a rest after he’s completed the epic challenge which he begins on Sunday. The 35-year-old from Banbury is taking on ‘Britain’s most brutal race’ to raise money for Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK to fund research into the condition from which his wife Sarah suffers.
