Memorial unveiled to a double VC war hero

A DOUBLE Victoria Crosswinning hero has been honoured with a new memorial at an Oxford college. Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse, who was the only man to be awarded two VCs in the First World War, was remembered in the unveiling of a commemorative paving slab at St Peter’s College on Tuesday - the 100th anniversary of the action that won him his fi rst VC. The memorial was unveiled by the college’s Master Mark Damazer and the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire Tim Stevenson. Capt Chavasse was born in nearby New Inn Hall Street, where his father and brother later founded the college. In his speech, the Lord Lieutenant said: “This is a memorable day. By celebrating the extraordinary life of Noel Chavasse, we can remind ourselves of the deaths and the heroism of countless others impacted by the events of those extraordinary four years. “Noel Chavasse’s unbelievably brave behaviour time and again in support of his fellows, rescuing in the process many lives, is surely an encouragement to the

By Dominic Thomas rest of us is and an example of continuing value.” Serving in the Liverpool Scottish Regiment, Capt Chavasse was awarded his fi rst VC in 1916 for saving the lives of more than 20 wounded men in no-man’s land under heavy fi re, sustaining a shell splinter in the process. A year later, he was posthumously awarded a second VC for continuing to save wounded men from the battlefield for two days, despite having sustained a wound that would prove fatal. Capt Chavasse, who died aged 32, is one of only three people to be awarded the VC twice. Wreaths were also laid at the memorial by members of the Chavasse family, 33 of whom attended the ceremony from across the country. One of them, Rev Father Paul Chavasse, who came from Staffordshire to attend the ceremony, said: “It was very moving.
