Hotel revamp could be key to improving town footfall

AN ABINGDON leader is hoping plans to extend and upgrade the Oxford Abingdon Hotel will prompt developers into renovating the derelict Upper Reaches Hotel on the other side of the town.

A planning application to demolish and rebuild parts of three-star Oxford Abingdon Hotel, formerly the Four Pillars Hotel, has been submitted to Vale of White Horse District Council. Owner Coldunell Limited is also in talks with a four-star hotel operator

to take over the building in Marcham Road, by the entrance to Tesco supermarket. Abingdon town councillor Sandy Lovatt welcomed the plans as a boost to the town’s economy. Cllr Lovatt, also a Vale district and county councillor, said: “I am glad they are doing it, we have got to get footfall up to make Abingdon more viable commercially. “It is no longer a town that can compete with Oxford – and in that respect Witney is quite lucky because it is far enough away.” He added: “I hope it means someone will do a similar thing to the old Upper VË Í ÖjÄË Ë¬?~jËÏ
