Police patrols to be increased after series of arson attacks Fires and car accidents make up busy weekend By George Welch NORTH Oxfordshire fi refighters endured a busy bank holiday weekend after being called out to numerous incidents. As well as the rising mercury, crews battled a ‘severe’ fi re, dealt with a suspected arson attack, attended a ‘serious’ high-speed crash and helped a child escape after a car smashed into a lamppost. Among the callouts included one to a raging blaze that spread from a conifer tree to engulf the fences of six gardens in Danes Road, Bicester. A shed, outhouse and garage block were also damaged in the inferno, with emergency services treating the fi re, which happened at 7.30pm on Sunday, as suspicious. Crews from Bicester and Kidlington battled the rapidly-spreading blaze from the ground and a garage roof using hose reels and a main jet. They left the scene after three hours, although a joint investigation with Thames Valley Police was unable to determine the cause due to the severity of the damage. The incident came after fi refighters attended a separate fi re in neighbouring Langford Gardens 24 hours earlier in which a fence was set alight, around 80 metres away.

The fence did not catch fi re and only about one square metre was damaged before a neighbour with a bucket put it out. The incident is being treated as arson. Incident commander, crew manager Pete Mackay from Bicester Fire Station said after the Danes Road fi re that police patrols would be increased in the area. The bank holiday weekend began for north Oxfordshire crews with a high-speed crash near Banbury on Friday. Crews from Banbury, Deddington and a specialist rescue crew from Kidlington fi re station, were called to the two-car smash at 11.30pm. The vehicles were travelling at such high speeds on the B4100 between Adderbury and Aynho, near Nell Bridge, they ended up around 100 yards apart. It took more than an hour to cut

both drivers free. A passenger from each car freed themselves without the emergency services. Watch manager John Callaway said both drivers, who were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, were ‘lucky’ to be alive. The road was closed for several hours. The following day, a child and a driver were lucky not to suffer serious injuries after the car they were in hit a lamppost. Emergency services said no one was hurt in the smash at Langford Village, Bicester shortly after 2pm. Occupants, including a small child, were wearing seatbelts and had a properly-sized child seat which protected them from any significant injuries, including when the airbags activated. Two passing motorists provided assistance and shelter.
