ÂŁ20m boost for town • The Didcot skyline DIDCOT’S new ‘Garden Town’ status could mean a ÂŁ20 million infrastructure boost. Government housing minister Brandon Lewis toured Great Western Park housing estate and sites earmarked for investment on Monday before announcing Didcot is to become

By Loughlan Campbell a ‘Garden Town’ in a presentation at Cornerstone Arts Centre. The town’s new status means developments including a proposed ÂŁ35m bridge in west Didcot over the railway line and a ÂŁ12m northern perimeter

road link could be given a funding boost and fast-tracked through the planning system. Minister Mr Lewis said: “What this status means for the town is that it will get Government assurances in terms of developments, making it easier for the funding of projects in this area.

“Currently, there are 400 homes being built a year in Didcot and that’s a strong, steady intake, but we are determined to build more houses and the local councils here are very much pushing the Government on bringing in these houses and the developments this town needs.

Bicester became a ‘Garden Town’ last year and was granted ÂŁ20m by Government for infrastructure. About 15,000 houses are already allocated for Didcot in South Oxfordshire District Council’s Local Plan • Continues on page 3
