Westgate menu extends to include new eateries By Eva Astreinidou MORE brands and new foodie destinations have been confirmed as part of Oxford’s soon-to-be-completed £440million shopping destination. Westgate Oxford revealed the names for the centre to open on October 24. The new names include Nespresso, Grand Caffe Concerto, Neds Noodle Bar, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Boost, Salt ‘n’ Sauce, Crepes O Mania and the Shake Lab. Others announced just last week include boutique cinema chain Curzon Cinemas and restaurants Pho, Pizza Pilgrims, Shoryu, Dirty Bones and The Breakfast Club. The Westgate Alliance has confirmed retailers such as Reiss and LK Bennett are also to open there. The leader of Oxford City Council, Bob Price, has hailed the opening of Westgate as a ‘turning point for the city and for the wider region’. He said: “The centre will offer an amazing range of high quality shops, brilliant new restaurants and street food stalls, a superb new cinema and

unparalleled views of the city and the surrounding countryside.” Emma Mees, senior portfolio manager at Landsec, working in conjunction with Westgate Alliance on the venture, said: “Demand for both the retail and leisure offer at Westgate Oxford has been fantastic. “From having drinks with friends over the city’s famous spires, to playing mini golf with the family or browsing the latest fashion collections, Westgate Oxford will offer something for everyone to enjoy.” Neds Noodle Bar and Salt ‘n’ Sauce will sit within Westgate Social, a new food and leisure experience anchored by Junkyard Golf, a crazy golf course. In the last two weeks, drivers have had to face congestion around the construction work area, which Cllr Price said was ‘deeply irritating’. He added: “The county council and the Westgate Alliance have worked closely to keep the road system working well for the past two years and it’s disappointing that the successful traffic management system has broken down temporarily.”

Drive to put cycling out in front

An artist’s impression of The Westgate Centre The former cycling commissioner for London pedalled through Oxford’s landmark sights in style. Andrew Gilligan made his way into the city to discuss what is required for cycling to become a ‘super attractive’ mode of transport in Milton Keynes,

Oxford and Cambridge. He met with county council leader Ian Hudspeth and city council leader Bob Price to create a plan on how to work with local organisation and councils to create a vision for cycling in the city.

Chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission Lord Adonis has tasked Mr Gilligan, who is also a Sunday Times journalist, with the important project, which also captures the city’s ambition to become a top cycling city.
