The pilot and passenger, both in their 60s, suffered only minor injuries after their Tiger Moth plane crashed into two parked cars during take-off at Brimpton Airfield.

Month of protests launched at AWE ANTI-NUCLEAR protestors began a planned month of demonstrations outside the Atomic Weapons Establishment’s (AWE) site in Burghfield with a blockade on Monday morning.

Almost a dozen protestors from the Trident Ploughshares campaign group started the action on Monday by blocking the north entrance to the site from Reading Road into The Mearings.

They held out umbrellas spelling out ‘Stop Trident’, in reference to AWE’s work in manufacturing and maintaining nuclear weapons as part of the UK’s Trident nuclear programme.

Placards and signs were also displayed to mark the start of a month of action, with the intention to disrupt work at Burghfield and for different campaign groups to show their opposition to the renewal of the Trident programme.

One of the protestors, Angie Zelter, said: “This is the start of a whole month of direct action at AWE Burghfield, which is where the new warheads are being made.

“We’re all wearing red because

we should not be crossing the red line in renewing Trident, it’s illegal, criminal, breaks international law and encourages terrorism.

“This is a job that should not be happening.”

The Trident programme relates to four submarines which are carrying up to eight nuclear missiles, with the aim being to deter nuclear attacks on the UK. The Government is expected to vote on whether to renew Trident later this year.

Fellow protestor Sarah Lasenby added: “We are protesting about the fact that Britain’s nuclear weapons are excessive.

“In every respect they are weapons of mass destruction, they are very unhumanitarian, and are against all international humanitarian law.”

AWE has warned local residents and its staff to prepare for disruption around Burghfield, as well as advising about the possibility of action at its other site in Aldermaston.

said: “AWE recognises the democratic right of individuals to participate in lawful and peaceful protest activities.

“AWE will work with both the Ministry of Defence Police and Thames Valley Police to ensure the safety and security of the Burghfield site.”

POLICE in West Berkshire are warning residents to be aware of disruption this month as a number of protests are expected to be held around AWE Burghfield.

Demonstrations began on Monday, with a number of campaign groups set to protest against nuclear weapons and the Trident programme throughout June.

A large police presence was at the site for the fi rst protest on Monday, with officers aiming to ensure the protests remain peaceful.

Supt Jim Weems, local policing area commander for West Berkshire, said: “We respect everyone’s right to protest in this way.

“However, should activity go beyond peaceful, those breaking the law will be dealt with proportionately.

“Measures are in place to notify local residents and those who might possibly be affected by protests of any planned or unplanned activity.

“Our aim is to ensure there is minimal disruption caused to local residents, the wider community of West Berkshire and the surrounding areas whilst facilitating protest.”

Fears voiced over plan to relocate bus station PLANS to move Newbury’s bus station to The Wharf would “significantly damage” the market and coach trade in the town.

That is the view of Newbury Town Council’s planning and highways committee, which passed a motion last Wednesday calling on West Berkshire Council to reconsider the proposal.

It is also worried that coaches that stop at The Wharf would be less inclined to do so.

Anthony Pick, chairman of the planning committee and who tabled the motion, said: “I

want to encourage collaboration between the town council and West Berkshire Council for the solution of the problems we identified in the motion.

“The coach trade is quite important to Newbury.

“They stay for a couple of hours while the drivers take a statutory rest, so we have up to about 400 people going into Newbury to shop, and this was not properly considered when the planning application was passed.

“The market traders that

require larger vehicles, I don’t know what would happen to them, so we have to fi nd a solution.”

The application to move the bus station is in anticipation of the proposed redevelopment of the Market Street area.

It would free up the bus station site in Market Street for the £50million revamp.

Martin Dunscombe, spokesman for West Berkshire Council, said: “We have exciting plans for the Market Street regeneration.

“As with any plan of this size, we have engaged with a wide range of partners from a very early stage, including Newbury Town Council.

“Through these discussions and the subsequent planning application we have not received the level of complaints which would justify reviewing and resubmitting the planning application.

“The decision followed the appropriate planning process and still stands.”

An investigation into what happened has been launched by the Air Accident Investigation Branch.

Police launch campaign on drink-driving THAMES Valley Police has launched its summer campaign to tackle drink- and drug-driving.

The campaign started on Monday and will run throughout June and July to coincide with the Euro 2016 championships.

It comes after 325 people were arrested across the Thames Valley in the force’s campaign over Christmas.

Sgt Chris Appleby, from the Roads Policing Department, said: “Driving after drinking is a major cause of death and injury on our roads.

“Alcohol impairs many of the functions necessary for safe driving and the risk of death or injury rapidly increases with alcohol consumption, so it’s not worth the risk.

“This campaign will draw drivers’ attention to the risks posed by using drink or drugs while in control of a vehicle and the serious penalties which they will face when they are caught.”

Drink or drug drivers can be fi ned up to £5,000, receive a prison sentence of up to six months and a mandatory disqualification of 12 months, as well as three to 11 points on their licence.

Hilary Cole, the council’s executive member for culture, said: “We can’t afford to keep our library service as it is so what it offers and how it is run will need to change.

“Our aim is to fi nd a sustainable model which allows us to

provide a good library service whilst still living within our means each year.

“We’ve already started conversations with town and parish councils and community groups and I look forward to working with them to develop ideas for the future.

“We expect to conclude these discussions and receive the assessment in August and we will then be able to consider how

best to move forward with a proposal for the library service.”

The proposal to close the libraries was made by the council in response to having to fi nd £17.5million of savings after its Government funding was cut.

The council held a meeting last Thursday with community groups to update them on the process and answer questions.

A workshop session has also been planned for a later date.

‘Inadequate’ care home put in special measures

“Also we have hired agency staff as it is difficult to recruit, so in the interim we are using agency staff to cover.”

A COLD Ash care home has been rated as ‘inadequate’ and placed in special measures after it was judged by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to be unsafe.

Holly Grange Residential Home, in Cold Ash Hill, was given the lowest overall rating possible by the CQC when it published its report last Wednesday.

The 16-bed home was slammed for having insufficient staff, a number of health and safety issues, and inappropriate infection control practice.

It was also criticised for having gaps in staff training, and that its service was not always caring.

The report said: “People were potentially at risk because staffing levels within the service during the day and at night were not sufficient to meet people’s needs.

“On one occasion we found the front door open and unsecured, meaning that people could have left the service unobserved, or unauthorised people could have gained access to the building.

“Overall we found the management of the service to be largely reactive rather than proactive.

“This meant that people were not fully protected and the ser-

News Bites Cakes for Queen NEWBURY: A secondary school baking competition is being held at Newbury College tomorrow to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

West Berkshire Council’s chairman Quentin Webb is hosting the competition for pupils in years seven to 13 from Park House, The Willink, St Bartholomew’s, Trinity and Kennet schools.

Cakes will have the theme of ‘a scene for the Queen’, with pupils encouraged to depict their favourite places across West Berkshire on the cakes.

They will be judged by Cllr Webb, college principal Anne Murdoch, and head pastry chef at The Vineyard, Anthony Millon.

There will also be a showpiece cake designed and baked by Newbury College, and baking demonstrations from local businesses.

Record number WEST BERKS: Volunteers from across the region have tallied up more than 2,400 hours of volunteering for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA) over the last 12 months – the highest number in the charity’s history.

TVAA revealed the figure to coincide with National Volunteers’ Week, which is running at the moment.

Residents fight plans to build new pavilion WORRIED residents on a quiet Newbury estate have clashed with the chairman of Hungerford Town Football Club over his plans to build a summer pavilion less than 50 yards from their homes.

Some residents fear that house prices could be hit badly should West Berkshire Council grant Nigel Warwick permission for a pavilion to be erected in the grounds of Goldwell House, a listed building, in Speen.

The council’s western area planning committee was due to make a decision last night as the Observer went to press.

Mr Warwick bought the elegant three-storey building four years ago, which is now his head office of international company NJW, who specialise in design and technology.

He confidently told a group of residents that he fully expected the council to give the go-ahead, and that he would consider selling the building and fi nding new offices for his 20 employees if the vote went against him.

Mr Warwick said: “We’re a large international company, and I would probably sell up and

fi nd a new place, if the council turns us down.

“My staff are special to me, and I want the best for them. The summer pavilion would be an ideal place for them to chat and relax.”

But nearby residents fear they will be faced with an “ugly” new building, wholly out of character with Goldwell House.

Two vigilant residents accused ‘someone’ of deliberately trying to mislead objectors by providing incorrect dimensions for the proposed pavilion, to make it seem smaller than it was intended.

John Watts, who lives just 30 yards from the proposed pavilion, protested: “We bought our house because it’s in such a quiet area, but if this gets the go-ahead, I’m worried that we might be bombarded by music, and loud voices.

“In my opinion it could also have a serious affect on house prices here.”

The planning committee had been recommended to approve the pavilion plans by officers ahead of last night’s meeting.

John’s million miles with SCAS A VOLUNTEER car driver has been chalking up the miles around Berkshire ferrying patients to and from appointments for South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).

Newbury’s John Salter has clocked a mammoth 1,188,170 miles for SCAS since he started volunteering 30 years ago in 1986.

His impressive total is almost

the equivalent of driving to the moon five times, or 47 laps of the equator.

And SCAS is hoping that more people follow John’s lead and offer their services to its nonemergency patient transport service.

John said: “In 1985 I underwent open heart surgery – which was very new at the time – and following the operation the company gave me early retirement for health reasons.

“I didn’t want to be sitting at home doing nothing, but also wasn’t looking for paid work.

“I bumped into a colleague who had joined the volunteer car driver scheme, started in January 1986 and wouldn’t have kept doing it for 30 years if I didn’t enjoy it!”

The service operates six days a week, with volunteers able to donate as little or as much time as they like.

Approval given to 33 Thatcham homes plan PLANS to build 33 homes on the corner of Bath Road and Henwick Lane in Thatcham have been given the go-ahead

by West Berkshire Council.

The council’s eastern area planning committee voted to approve the outline proposals when it met last Wednesday evening.

Developer Ressance Land is looking to build 26 apartments and seven houses on the land at 129-141 Bath Road.

The existing buildings would be demolished to make room for the homes, which would be accessed from Henwick Lane.

Concerns had been raised about not enough parking being provided for the houses, with the council’s highways team saying there was a shortfall on 12 spaces.

But committee chairman Graham Pask said this was because the application had been submitted last September, it had to be judged on its parking guidelines from that time.

He said: “Basically the number of parking spaces was calculated on the basis of our old recommended guidelines on

parking standards.

“When the [council’s] development plan document is looked at by the inspector in the next couple of weeks, we are proposing on increasing the number of car parking spaces, essentially per bedroom.

“But we can’t judge this on the new criteria because it was submitted under the old criteria.”

The issue of affordable housing was also brought up, as none had been included in the development after Ressance said it would be unviable.

But an agreement was reached for an ‘overage’ payment where if Ressance made a bigger profit than expected on the houses, it would make a fi nancial contribution towards building affordable housing elsewhere in the district.

Cllr Pask added: “The bottom line is if [Ressance] makes more profit than it says it is likely to, it will be written into a legal agreement to pay an amount towards affordable housing.

“In our opinion, it’s a good compromising way forward.”

Care team ready to take on Three Peaks STAFF from a Newbury-based diabetes care company are set to take on a mammoth hike up three mountains in the space of 24 hours to raise £5,000 for charity.

A team of 33 people from Ascensia Diabetes Care are preparing for the Three Peaks Challenge, which will see them climb Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales.

They will begin the challenge tomorrow morning, with just 24 hours to reach the peaks of all three mountains.

And they are hoping to raise £5,000 through their exploits for

type 1 diabetes charity JDRF. Newbury resident Ros Barker, 43, country head UK at Ascensia Diabetes Care, explained that the idea for the challenge came up after the company was created at the beginning of this year.

She said: “We wanted to have a challenge as a new organisation to do, and the Three Peaks was suggested as a good activity to form the new team.

“We chose the JDRF as the sponsored organisation primarily because they’re focused on research into type 1 diabetes,

and it fits very nicely with the purpose of our organisation.

“Our training has varied between nothing, and some of the team have been doing lots of work in the gym. We haven’t had any formal training though.

“We’ve set ourselves a fundraising target of £5,000, and we’re almost at £2,800 so we’re trying to drum up a bit more support in the last few days.”

The team, which also includes West Berkshire residents Rebecca Adams, Melanie Baker, Kim Dewhurst, Debbie Kirwan, Catriona Rasman, Catherine Kulle and Shirley Adams, will cover a horizontal distance of 42km, and 3,000m vertically.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, and affects 400,000 people in the UK. JDRF is the leading global charity funding research into type 1 diabetes, as it tries to cure, prevent and treat the condition.

Lucky dog saved from burning car

• The burning car at Northcroft Leisure Centre BRITAIN’S luckiest dog is back home after being rescued from a blazing car, writes Brian Radford.

The dog, a Chihuahua, was alone in the car that burst into flames while parked near the Northcroft Leisure Centre in Newbury.

Its owner was in the centre, unaware of his dog’s plight.

Once told of the dramatic rescue, he thanked the centre’s general manager Richard May and his assistant Leigh Rossier, whose prompt action probably saved the dog’s life.

Richard said: “We grabbed a

fire extinguisher and ran outside after being told lots of smoke was coming from under a car.

“We noticed the dog in the back of the car, so we used the fi re extinguisher to smash a side window, and Leigh reached in and pulled the dog to safety.

“It was cowering and already affected by the thick smoke, as was Leigh.

“Once we had lifted the dog to safety, flames started shooting up from under the car.

“The dog was incredibly lucky.

If we hadn’t gone to it when we did, we think it probably wouldn’t have survived.”

ROYAL Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is warning residents about the dangers of barbecues and outdoor cooking as the summer season approaches.

It is encouraging people to be “happy campers” by making sure they are careful when using lit barbecues.

The service is advising never to leave a lit barbecue unattended, make sure it is kept away from anything wooden, ensuring it is fully extinguished when fi nished and not to empty hot ashes into dustbins or wheelie bins.

Iain Harrison, group manager for prevention at RBFRS, said: “It’s natural to want to go outdoors and enjoy the warm weather with family and friends.

“Many of us can’t wait to get the barbecue lit but please be patient, and don’t use flammable liquids such as petrol.

“If the weather takes a turn for the worse, never take your barbecue indoors or into a tent.

“Carbon monoxide is a by product of combustion through, for example, burning barbecue coals, and I cannot emphasise enough the dangers this gas can pose.”

Elvis show to rock town HE might have died almost 40 years ago but legacy of Elvis Presley is set to live on forever.

Fans of the American star can relive the glory days when tribute show ‘The Elvis Years’ comes to the Corn Exchange on Saturday, June 18.

With musician Mario Kombou starring as the King of Rock and Roll, the crowd will hear some of Elvis’ most famous songs, see the King’s most extravagant costumes and watch some of the most popular dance moves of all time.

And with Mario returning to West Berkshire as one of the most successful musicians ever, he hopes he can he repeat the success of his last visit to the Station Road venue.

“We played there a couple of years ago and every one of us had a lovely time,” Mario told the Observer.

“The audience were wonderful and we’re looking forward to coming back.

“On the night, you can expect twoand-a-half hours of the best music in the world.

“Over 50 hits and more than 12 costume changes guaranteed to have the audience dancing at the end.”

Accepting that the audience are there to hear Elvis’ songs, Mario understands that he has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders.

Impersonating one of world’s greatest stars does have its challenges, but the performer, who has a team of 13 singers and musicians by his side to cover tracks such as ‘A Little Less Conversation’, ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock’, accepts the job of trying to give his audience a night at the theatre to remember.

As well as this show, Mario has also performed as Elvis in the musical ‘Jailhouse Rock’ in the West End. “Half the job is done because, although you still have to deliver a good quality show, the audience are there because they love Elvis and his music,” he said.

“So as long as you are sincere and deliver a good honest show and leave them happy, then you’ve done your job.”

He added: “I asked our musical director from ‘Jailhouse Rock’ Dave Mackay if he’d be interested in working on a project I’d had in mind for a long time.

“And with some of the original cast, we created the fi rst show 10 years ago and it’s grown from that to where we are today.”

Tickets for the show cost £21 or £19.50 concessions, and the performance starts at 7.45pm.

Singer treasures meetings FOR 15 years, musician Dave Dawson has been travelling to Wiltshire to get away from the hustle and bustle of London.

Now a resident of the county, the singer-songwriter is travelling around the South performing to elderly people in care homes.

And his next stop is at Thatcham Court on Friday, June 24.

“One of the best aspects of working in care homes, and more especially in dementia units, is that I get a lot of joy in singing songs that obviously have meant something to the residents for a long time,” the full-time musician told the Observer.

“The reaction I get is heart warming and it gives me a lot of job satisfaction in knowing that I have given them an enjoyable hour. It’s wonderful to walk out of a gig leaving people even happier than when you walked in.

“Unlike pub and club gigs, where sometimes I don’t get home till 2am, I’m back in time for ‘Flog It’ or ‘Pointless’ and have the rest of the evening to relax with my wife and cat.”

Dave’s shows for an elderly audience have proved to be a big hit over the last two decades.

Dave’s repertoire includes swing, rock and roll, ‘90s pop and country and western to make sure that there is something for everyone.

“I simply mix it all up (the genres), take requests and respond to audience reactions,” Dave said.

“The short answer is that I’ve no idea what songs will be sung, as it will be a surprise for all of us.”

He added: “My grounding was in pubs, clubs and private functions such as weddings and these I still do.

“However, with an older audience, there is such a wealth of life experience and history in the room and I’ve spoken to people who share stories of their younger lives with me.

“For instance, I’ve spoken to fighter pilots, code breakers and a man who witnessed Sinatra’s fi rst concert in America.

“Ours is the last generation who will be able to get these stories fi rst hand and that’s something very special.”

Country concert LIVE MUSIC: A mixture of country and blues music will be heard at the Arlington Arts Centre tomorrow night, Friday, June 10, when The Newgrass Cutters arrive in West Berkshire.

The four musicians of Pete Brown, Phil Capaldi, Richard Collins and Mike Nicholas visit the Mary Hare School venue to perform tracks from their latest album ‘Mowing Down The Groove’.

The gig starts at 8pm.

Band to return LIVE MUSIC: Newbury-based covers band Mash will return to The White Hart on Saturday, June 18.

The four-piece group will perform songs from the 1960s to the present day in the free gig at the High Street pub starting at 9pm.

Love and Friendship MOVIE NIGHT: This year’s romantic comedy movie ‘Love and Friendship’, will be screened at the Corn Exchange Cinema from Friday, June 10, to Thursday, June 16.

Starting Xavier Samuel and Kate Beckinsale, the story focuses on Susan Vernon (Beckinsale) who has an affair with his sister’s husband.

Comedy returns COMEDY: Newbury’s very own comedy night is back at the Corn Exchange on Friday, June 17.

Jongleurs will see a number of local comics young and old along with a couple of established comedians share their gags next Friday night. It is suitable for over-18s, tickets cost £15, and it starts at 7.45pm.

Dance performance DANCE: Newbury-based Dance Company ACE returns to Arlington Arts Centre on Saturday, June 11.

The show will see a number of students show off their routines that they have learned over the last few months.

It costs £10 and starts at 7pm.

Falkland earn second win by beating Marlow FALKLAND Cricket Club picked up their second win of the season as they recorded a four wicket victory over Marlow on Saturday.

They overcame Marlow’s all out total of 187 with seven overs to spare, with all but one of Falkland’s batters getting double figure run scores.

Thatcham and Newbury suffer weekend defeats

In what was their second defeat of the season, Thatcham set High Wycombe a target of 189 after their 52 overs.

Peter Spriggs (55), Duncan Johnson (48) and Scott Gibson (39) produced the highest scores for Thatcham, who lost eight wickets in their innings.

But it wouldn’t be enough as John Stevens had an impressive knock of 87 to ensure the Buckinghamshire side took victory as they reached 192-6 in the 45th over.

Newbury’s batsmen struggled in their innings, with only Josh Harris’ 72 something to write home about.

They were all out for 161, with no-one except Harris managing to score more than 20 in a disappointing performance for the visitors.

Reading replied with a decent showing, with Adam Trigwell (44), Aberdeen Singh (39) and Sunny Jhetta (29) contributing the best scores to reach 162-6 and take the win.

The results leave Thatcham sixth in division two of the Thames Valley Cricket League, with Newbury in the same position in division 3a.

Both are back in action on Saturday, as Thatcham host Chiswick & Whitton, while Newbury are at home to Yateley.

They will host Windsor in their next game on Saturday.

Foursome triumph in captain’s competition STUART King, Giles Feltham, Andrew Grayson and Ian Haines were crowned the winners of West Berks Golf Club’s annual captain’s day competition, as they finished on 125 points.

They fi nished five points clear of Gale McAuley, Tom McAuley, Jimmy Green and Nigel Huszarik in second, who were in turn one ahead of the third-placed team of Luke Prestoe, Tony Coventry, Jock Douglas and Shaun Ponsford.

Ponsford also won the Presidents Putter with 42 points, ahead of Matt Thomas and Chris Harris, while Tina Mulford was the leading lady.

Somewhat ironically, heavy rain blighted the Sunshine Cup, played in memory of Sharon Williams.

However Renee Wheeler and Malcolm Thwaites overcame the weather to win with a score of 43 points, one ahead of Sally and Ed RowleyWilliams.

Mary Harwood and Mike Sparvel were third with 41 points.

Elsewhere, Joshua March won the Saturday stableford with 37 points, while Ray Evans triumphed in the midweek stableford with 39 points.

And the club’s seniors drew 3-3 at home in a friendly fixture with The Hampshire Golf Club.

Sport Bites Day at the races HORSE RACING: An afternoon of racing is taking place at Newbury Racecourse today.

The Shadwell Arabian Stallions International Stakes kicks off the action from 1.30pm, with the first thoroughbred race – the Be Wiser Insurance Novice Stakes – following at 2pm.

Also on the card are The Crossland EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, The Lord Weinstock Memorial EBF Stallions Stakes, The Comax Handicap Stakes, and the Be Wiser Insurance ‘Restricted’ Handicap Stakes.

King wins run ATHLETICS: Matthew King was the winner of the Ollie Johnson Memorial Kintbury 5 run, held on Sunday.

He won the five mile race, organised by Newbury Athletics Club in memory of one of their former members, in a time of 26:52, finishing ahead of Mark Vardy and David McCoy in second and third.

Sophie Crumly finished as the leading lady, completing the course in 30:24.

KENNET SHORT OF A FIRST WIN TEAM Kennet Athletics Club just missed out on their first win of the Wessex Junior Track and Field League season on Sunday, despite some impressive performances from their athletes.

Their total of 492 points meant they were just 18 shy of winners Winchester, and well clear of host club Salisbury in third.

The highlight of the day came from Harry Booker, who smashed the league record in the under-13 boys’ shot and discus.

Booker’s throw of 11.36m in the shot moves him up to second in the UK, while an astonishing 34.83m in the discus places him at number one nationally.

He also picked up a win in the B-string javelin to make sure it was a clean sweep in the throws.

Booker was also part of the 4x100m relay, alongside Matt Jones, Ben East and Oliver Gregory, breaking another club record after clocking 56.40s.

Daniel Hockaday also bettered a club record, this time in the under-15 boys’ 300m as he completed the sprint in 40.4s.

There were plenty of wins for the under-13 girls on the field, with Sophie Wheadon triumphing in both the discus and javelin with throws of 24.64m and 21.14m respectively, along with Isobel Kerslake winning the 100m.

In the under-15 girls, Lucy Wells put in a dominant performance in the 1,500m, with her time of 5:05.7 seeing her win by some 160m.

And Olivia Buchanan impressively cleared 1.55m in the under-17 women’s high jump for another Team Kennet victory, while on the track Holly Donohoe won the 300m in 43.9s.

Winchester won the meet with 510 points, ahead of Team Kennet on 492, Salisbury on 396, New Forest on 392, Isle of Wight on 384 and Poole Runners on 36.

The next Wessex League meeting is on June 26 in Swindon.
