Mice droppings in kitchen cost takeaway over £4,000 Chinese closed due to ‘a risk to customers’ now rated 4 out of 5 By George Welch A CHINESE takeaway in Thame has to pay out more than £4,000 after mice droppings were found in its kitchen. Novarra Limited, which owns Tommy Yaki in Wellington Street, pleaded guilty to four food safety offences and was ordered to pay £2,400 in fi nes and £1,876 in costs. Magistrates heard how during a routine food safety inspection at Tommy Yaki on March 21 this year, South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) officers discovered a fi lthy kitchen littered with the mice droppings. The inspection also revealed that the building had construction defects that allowed pests to get in. Important cleaning and pest control procedures had also not been carried out, the council said. The officers immediately closed the takeaway and it was given a food hygiene rating of zero, meaning ‘urgent improvement’ was necessary. Councillor Tony Harbour, cabinet member for waste, grounds maintenance, food safety and environmental health at SODC, said: “At the time of the inspection, the premises posed a serious health risk to customers and was shut down as a result.

“I hope other food businesses learn from this example. If you are putting the public at risk, we will not hesitate to take action.” The company was sentenced at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on November 22. The magistrates took into account the company’s guilty plea and the fi nancial difficulties it had experienced as a result of having to close the takeaway. The March report said the takeaway’s food hygiene and safety and structural compliance was ‘bad’, and that it had ‘little’ confidence in the management. The officers have revisited the premises a number of times since the enforced closure to ensure that improvements were made, and to assist Novarra with meeting their food safety requirements. Following urgent improvements, the takeaway reopened a week after the closure in March. It was recently inspected by the officers again and has now been awarded a rating of four out of five.
