to gospel and classics. He has played trumpet and cornet in big bands, and is shocked and baffled by the ban. Mr Berry said: “I have told BID that I felt intimidated and belittled when the rangers came up to me in front of lots of people in the street, who had been listening to me playing. “I’d played there for 16 years, and all I’d had were compliments from people who thought I was doing a good job by brightening up their day. “I always took great care not to play too loudly in case I’d distract people working in nearby shops and offices. A POPULAR street entertainer is fighting back after being mysteriously banned from his lucrative spot of 16 years. Two street rangers halted trumpeter Colin Berry, 54, while he played outside a supermarket in Newbury town centre on June 17. Mr Berry, of Tadley, was told to stop, put his golden trumpet in its case and move on. But Mr Berry is fighting back, and has asked the Musicians’ Union to help him get the ban lifted. The rangers are employed by Newbury BID (Business Improvement District), which is funded by local fi rms. Busking is Mr Berry’s way of making a little extra when he runs short of clients as a private music teacher. He revealed that one shopper poured £23.50 in cash into his ‘thank you’ box on the pavement. He said: “It was mainly cash and weighed a ton. I couldn’t believe it. This lady suddenly appeared with a heap of coins, and said ‘You’re great!’ and went on listening. “Newbury people love their music, and are very generous. It’s a pleasure to play for them.” Mr Berry’s wide repertoire ranges from jazz and ballads
