to gospel and classics. He has played trumpet and cornet in big bands, and is shocked and baffled by the ban. Mr Berry said: “I have told BID that I felt intimidated and belittled when the rangers came up to me in front of lots of people in the street, who had been listening to me playing. “I’d played there for 16 years, and all I’d had were compliments from people who thought I was doing a good job by brightening up their day. “I always took great care not to play too loudly in case I’d distract people working in nearby shops and offices. Busking is Mr Berry’s way of making a little extra when he runs short of clients as a private music teacher. He revealed that one shopper poured £23.50 in cash into his ‘thank you’ box on the pavement. He said: “It was mainly cash and weighed a ton. I couldn’t believe it. This lady suddenly appeared with a heap of coins, and said ‘You’re great!’ and went on listening. “Newbury people love their music, and are very generous. It’s a pleasure to play for them.” Mr Berry’s wide repertoire ranges from jazz and ballads
