Developer appeals decision to reject Park Road homes By Samantha McGregor CONTROVERSIAL plans for 135 new homes in Didcot will go to a public inquiry after councillors rejected the application. Catesby Estates wanted to build the new homes on land east of Park Road, to the south of the town. The proposals were thrown out by South Oxfordshire District Council planning committee in October after hundreds of people objected and raised concerns development in Didcot had “got out of hand”. Officers recommended the plans were approved, but councillors went against their advice. They said the development would encroach into the open countryside and nearby villages of East and West Hagbourne. Councillors further said there would be a loss of agricultural land and Section 106 planning obligations, which includes details of affordable housing and facilities the developer would pay for, had not been completed. Now Catesby Estates has appealed to the Secretary of State and an inquiry will take place next year. Campaigner Dave Llewellyn said while they were expecting the appeal the group remains hopeful it will be refused. He said: “The fact remains that the site is not allocated for housing in the current or emerging SODC Local Plan 2033. Didcot Garden Town’s delivery
plan published on 19th June shows this land as an important part of the green buffer to the south of the town. Development here would completely contradict and undermine the delivery plan.” Cllr Jane Murphy, deputy leader and councillor for East and West Hagbourne, said: “I hope that the planning inspector takes into consideration the local community’s strength of feeling, supports the council’s decision and dismisses the appeal.” A string of concerns had been raised ahead of the planning meeting including traffic, impact on the landscape, increased flood risk and it would mean more pressure on schools and local services. One resident, known only as Nicki, of South Park Avenue, raised concerns the level of development in and around Didcot had “got out of hand” and was putting a “strain” on services including health, education and highways. She said: “The strain put on the current infrastructure is crazy, there is not enough healthcare available, how can the existing schools cope whilst it takes time for new schools to get up and running, my son is currently one of 30 in his class. The roads and paths are in a terrible state – where is the investment to look after what we have… “I just think enough is enough, the area cannot cope with any more people unless you put in the basic amenities.”
Santas conga around town WALLINGFORD’S roads were filled with a record-breaking number of Santa lookalikes for this year’s Christmas Conga. Nearly 300 Santas completed a 3k dash on Sunday, organised by local charity Style Acre which supports adults with learning

disabilities in Oxfordshire. After the jolly run, the group of Father Christmases congregated in Market Place to form a conga line around the town, beating the town’s existing record of 250 Santas conga-ing. Many families took part and
there were even canine little helpers and pushchairs converted into sleighs. After the conga, Santas were free to enjoy the town’s Christmas shopping day with music, stalls, food and fireworks organised by independent traders in the town.
