Peddling soup to those in need on the city’s streets
By Owen Hughes HOMELESSNESS is becoming an epidemic in the city according to a charity providing free soup to anyone in need on the streets of Oxford. The Soup Peddler is trying to raise £1,500 for vital equipment and ingredients to continue helping those in need. The mobile soup kitchen run from the front of a bicycle aims to serve
up to 100 people a night with hearty homemade soups. Richard Brabin, an Oxford-based freelance writer, set up The Soup Peddler in December after reading about the growing number of homeless people across the country. He said: “I work predominantly in Oxford city centre and I’ve noticed there seems to be an increasing amount of people having to beg in order to get food. “I’ve sent emails to various council

Oxford City Council was one of the fi rst local authorities in England to receive a gold standard award in August last year for its efforts in preventing and tackling homelessness in the city. But Richard said: “We need to stop thinking of homeless people as lazy or workshy, and think of them as people
