Family support life-saving campaign for more donors Three-year-old son has rare and life-threatening immune condition By Samantha McGregor A FAMILY is getting behind a lifesaving appeal for more people to register as blood stem cell donors. For Andrew and Judy Kim, who live in Faringdon, the blood cancer charity DKMS’s Swab to be a Lifesaver appeal is close to their hearts. Last February, their three-year-old son Ally was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disorder, CGD, a rare and life-threatening condition where his immune system didn’t work properly. Earlier this year the charity launched an appeal to help fi nd a match for a potential blood stem cell donor for Ally, but fi nding a match has proved difficult due to his East Asian ancestry. He has since undergone a global gene replacement therapy trial at Great Ormond Street and was one of the fi rst participants in the UK. And although Ally is now home recovering, it’s likely he may need a transplant in the future which means the search for a matching donor goes on.

Dad Andrew said: “Ally has been doing well since he was discharged from hospital. He’s becoming more stable and his immune function slowly improving. “Ally is on heavy medication and needs regular blood transfusions but it has been a huge step forward in recovery. “As this is very much an experimental treatment we’re continuing the search for a matching donor as Ally might need a transplant in the future. “We want to encourage people to register as a potential lifesaver to help give others a second chance of life.” Ally’s mum Judy, 36, a scientist and lecturer at Oxford University, said: “Thank you to everyone who has helped us spread awareness, registering as a potential donor and all your love and support – we can never thank you enough.” She added: “The need for more Asian donors is huge. “Someone registering as a potential blood stem cell donor could have such a tremendous impact for people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. Please take the time to register.”

We want to encourage people to register as a potential lifesaver to help give others a second chance of life Ally’s father Andrew Kim

A smiling Ally receiving treatment in hospital The charity said someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukaemia, every 20 minutes. A blood stem cell donation from a genetically similar person can often

be the best hope of survival, but only one in three people in need of a transplant will fi nd a matching donor in their own family. DKMS is urging people from

different ethnicities including black and East Asian heritage to register. Anyone in good health, aged 17 to 55, can register. For more information go to dkms.org.uk
