Banger challenge set to hit £250,000 target VË0 jËÍj? ÄËÁj?aßËÍ Ë~ Ë?ÍË j j Ë+? ?WjË Ë Á a?ßË A CHARITY challenge for car enthusiasts over the Bank Holiday weekend is set to smash its £250,000 fundraising target. The Twin Town Challenge 2016 saw 100 teams drive their budget bangers - all bought for £500 or less - from West Oxfordshire to France and back in support of Charlbury-based disability charity, SpecialEffect. So far, it has raised £231,000 and organisers are hoping an auction of 30 cars that took part could push them over their target.
By Alex Ballinger This year’s challenge was won by the team of four from solicitors Brethertons, who have offices in Banbury and Bicester. Team member Alistair Spencer, a solicitor and notary, said: “It was a wonderful experience, which was great for getting to know our teammates, building friendships with other teams and the organisers, who did an amazing job. “Winning was the icing on the cake,

but the experience and friendships formed and the realisation of the amazing work done by SpecialEffect, was far more important than actually winning.” The teams had to take part in a number of challenges to gain points while driving more than 400 miles to Le Touquet, near Calais. Brethertons 99ers, as the team members dubbed themselves, bought their Lexus GS300 for a budget-beating 99 pence. The team, made up of Rose Glad-

den, Steven Neasham, Danielle Green and Mr Spencer took top spot with a score of 8,569 points. Second place went to the Can’t be Named for Legal Reasons team, with 8,155. Setting off from Blenheim Palace in Woodstock at 8.30am last Friday, the teams had to follow treasure hunts, drive around a track blindfolded and carry cardboard boxes, to name just a few of the challenges they faced. They returned to Oxfordshire for a prize-giving ceremony on Monday. The founder and CEO of SpecialEf-
fect, Dr Mick Donegan, said: “The success of the amazing Twin Town Challenge 2016 has left the SpecialEffect team both stunned and humbled, not only by the remarkable funds raised but also from the feel-good factor generated during a weekend that none of us will ever forget. “Twin Town 2016 is a transformational event for the charity.” Dr Donegan said: “Demand is rising all the time as more and more VË Í ÖjÄË Ë¬?~jËÏË
