Vogue -‐ Ethereal Fashion Tayla Palmer

My Brief I chose the vogue fashion brief because it will include taking photographs in an ethereal way. Ethereal really interests me and I have so many ideas of what I could include in the photographs. I’m really interested in the fairy side of ethereal, but I’m willing to try both the fairy and ghostly side of it. I want to mainly go to a forest and take photos because the backdrops will be mostly green; none of it will be the same as each other in each photograph. I hope my photographs are up to the standards of the theme and the fashion brief. I also hope to improve my skills as I develop these photographs. Below is some of my research: Benjamin Alexander Huseby, Eolo Perdifo, Bruno Dayan.

The editor will be parUcularly interested in the overall visual qualiUes of your 3 final outcomes as submissions for publicaUon in the magazine.

ArUst Analysis-‐Ashley Turner

Ashley Turner-‐This is what I see

Ashley Turner is a fashion photographer who photographs subjects such as ethereal fashion mostly of people on locaUon. I am parUcularly inspired by this photographer because she links with my theme of ethereal and I feel I will move on to photograph my photographs very similar to Turner. In this photograph Turner shot it in a forest and there is very liZle lighUng entering the shot also the autumnal colours give the photograph so[ lighUng. She also used female models and I am also going to use female models in my photographs. In the photograph I have chosen she has made the face less clear so her idenUty is hidden. This raises quesUons such as ‘does she feel guilty about anything?’ ‘why does she look lonely?’ and ‘what is the story behind the photograph?’ In response to Turners work I want to take my se of photographs and edit them in a similar want to Turner and explore the theme ethereal in a way that Turner does with a calming atmosphere. I chose Turner to analyze because I think her work has a mysterious effect to the Utle ethereal. I want my viewers to have this same effect when looking at the photographs and raise similar quesUons to Turners work.

EvaluaUon When planning my photo shoot my original intenUon was not much different to my actual outcome, it was to go to a forest or woods etc and make the ethereal theme really show in the photographs. I chose the theme of ethereal because it really interested me and put a lot of ideas in my mind that I wanted to explore. I feel like my photographs matched my brief and original idea. I feel my photographs came out well and I was really happy with the outcome that achieved because this was one of the first shoots we did independently. The lighUng in my photographs were not as strong as I would have liked because it was all roughly the same lighUng but I then edited them on photo shop and I was much happier. My technical consideraUon of the focusing of the photographs I think was good because I focused each photograph individually. In most of my photos the colouring is obviously the colour of the forest and I feel this suits the photographs I took; makes the photos look really natural. The composiUon of my photographs is not to unique as most of the photographs are central which I like about my photographs. I’ve made some of my photos darker than others and some are more grainy because I have printed them and then photographed them again. I think if someone were viewing my photographs they would understand my impact and always would have many quesUons to ask such as ‘what are the stories behind the relaUonships of the models?’ I also think they would see how much mystery that are in my photographs an this is important because that was my brief. In my opinion I feel like I have achieved the level of symbolism I wanted to achieve because I believe that the viewer will understand the point I wanted to portray in my photographs. In my photographs ethereal is clearly put in my photographs with the style of clothing and hair I’ve used and also the locaUons, and models.

Idea 2 For idea two I would like to look at a different side of ethereal, as you can see my idea one was a fairy like photo shoot so now I would like to move to a darker side of the theme. I am planning to do my net shoot in a studio type room with a black back drop. I want to just use one model which will hopefully be a younger model because I think it could work well with the darker side of ethereal. My idea is to have the young model and make her look older and more mature; the contrast of young and old. I also might make the set of photographs to tell a story with props and clothing the model will be using. In my photographs I want to create an atmosphere in the sense of freaky and dark, with a ghostly death kind of atmosphere.

ArUst Analysis-‐Eolo Perfido What I find parUcularly interesUng about this photograph is the way Perfido has contrasted the photograph because I love the lighUng being used and also the sepia colour. Perfido is a photographer that mainly takes portraits and this is what I want to capture in the subject maZer of my second set of photographs. I chose Eolo Perfido for my arUst analysis because he explores the opposite side of ethereal. Perfido photographs the darker side to ethereal and I though this would boost my project if I have the two ideas completely different to each other. The way I look at ethereal is in two secUons I think there is a fairy like side and a ghostly side to it. Obviously Perfido is using the ghostly side to create his photographs. This photograph makes me feel many emoUons and raises several quesUons, because it look like the girl is crying and she is scared, it might be a girl that is being bused or used etc. It looks like it has been taken in a black studio to give the effect of darkness and create a dark atmosphere to the viewer. I think a light was shone on to the girls face but its not a bright light just a subtle light, this highlights the ghost features and draws the aZenUon to the eyes. Even though the photograph s just a portrait it says a lot in the photograph as in the story behind the photograph and I imagine would raise a few quesUons about domesUc violence. I hope to aim for my photographs to look similar to this I want to photograph my younger sister and make her look older than she is. I also hope to make them as effecUve as Perfido.

My 3 Final Outcomes

EvaluaUon In idea two I decided to interpret the whole ethereal theme in a different way, in idea one it was all about the innocent delicate side but idea two I chose to do it more spooky and dark, in a ghost-‐like way. I looked at different arUsts but couldn't’t really find many that were similar to the way I wanted my photographs to be. A[er I took my first set of iniUal for idea two I only found few that were good enough quality. A[er I realised this I then took another set but added an extra prop which made a lot of difference to the result of the photographs which you can probably tell when looking at my photographs. I edited all my photographs to black and white because I feel they make more of an effect on the ghostly effect. A[er ediUng my iniUal photographs on Photoshop I then decided what techniques I was going to use to develop my photographs. I used sewing, projecUon and nail varnish remover. I think the nail varnish remover worked best because I could then develop it further on Photoshop using layering. I then had my three final outcomes, I chose to do projecUon, layering on Photoshop and layering by hand. My original intenUon when taking these photographs was to highlight the face in the picture with the black background, I highlighted the face with light from the ceiling and just a torch. I wanted to take them like this to show both side of ethereal. I think the quality of my photographs have ended up quite well purely because of the lighUng in the room and the model herself. I think the tones and colouring in my photographs have worked very well, I have made them all black and white because it gives the photographs a beZer effect. I think like Eolo Perfido my photographs will raise quesUons similar to Perfido. I feel like I achieved the level of symbolism I wanted to in the way I have portrayed the theme.

EvaluaUon of Final Project From looking at all of my project including idea ne and two overall I am really happy with all my iniUal and developmental photographs. I feel I have mad two very different views to the ethereal theme. My first iniUal photographs for idea one were beZer than idea two in my opinion but I brought ide two up with my ediUng and developmental. For the whole project my theme was ethereal and my intenUon was to show two different sides to the theme, I feel I approached this well and was really happy with all my outcomes including iniUal and developmental photographs. I wanted to show my viewers what ethereal meant without giving them a definiUon. I feel the quality of all my photographs were up to good standards and I feel I focused them all peZy good. In idea one obviously most of my photographs were in colour and I used many different techniques on Photoshop to make them different from each other. In most of my photographs I have used either a high or low contrast to make them lighter and darker. I think most of my photographs seem like they have stories behind them and I am really pleased with this because I wanted many quesUons to be raised. I feel like overall in my enUre project I reached the level of symbolism I intended to and hope to get a high grade in my project.
